Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), carcinogenic substances primarily formed through pyrolysis and oxidation of fat at high cooking temperatures, are commonly found at high levels in grilled meats. Reducing PAHs formation by incorporating natural antioxidants, such as through marination, has been demonstrated to be effective. However, the inhibitory effect of fresh phenolic-rich fruit powders on PAHs formation in charcoal-grilled meats remains unknown.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates how synthetic computed tomography (sCT) affects dose distribution in online adaptive radiotherapy (oART) during significant tumor volume reduction, focusing on a patient with large pleural metastases.
  • - By recalibrating sCT data to represent the diminished tumor volume, the researchers found that adaptive plans led to a better dose distribution with increased target coverage and reduced exposure to the surrounding lung tissue.
  • - Results indicated that while online plans underestimated dose delivery as tumors shrank, adaptive plans effectively minimized radiation to critical organs while maintaining adequate coverage of the tumor, highlighting the benefits of sCT in improving treatment accuracy in changing tumor conditions.

National Defense University, Taipei; National Yang-Ming University, Taipei/; Taichung Veterans General Hospital, Taiwan Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

The airway must not be ignored in cosmetic rhinoplasty operations, and it is important to address the 4 areas that restrict airflow namely the septum, the turbinates, the mid-vault, and the external nasal valve. Numerous techniques exist that treat these areas without any compromise in esthetic outcome. Techniques include lateral wall suture suspension methods, specialized sutures of the lateral crus, and articulated alar rim grafts.

Hyperglycemia in type 2 diabetes leads to diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) and neuropathic pain, yet the association between glycemic variability and painful DPN remains insufficiently evidenced. To address this, we conducted a prospective longitudinal cohort study involving adult type 2 diabetes patients at a medical center. DPN was identified using the Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument (MNSI), and neuropathic pain was assessed with the Taiwan version of the Douleur Neuropathique 4 (DN4-T) questionnaire.

Background: Severe aortic regurgitation (AR) and mitral regurgitation (MR) can lead to left ventricular (LV) systolic dysfunction; however, there are limited data about recovery of LV after surgery for AR or MR. Little is known to guide the management of combined AR and MR (mixed valvular heart disease [VHD]). This study is sought to investigate the predictors of postoperative LV function recovery in left-sided regurgitant VHD with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), especially for mixed VHD.
