R-CHOP therapy alone for limited-stage follicular lymphoma.

Irradiation therapy alone is a standard strategy for limited-stage FL, leading to a 10-year progression-free survival (PFS) rate of 30-50%. However, we have been administering R-CHOP therapy alone to patients with limited-stage FL. A total of 35 patients with newly diagnosed FL received R-CHOP therapy with curative intent between 2002 and 2009.

Effects of the oriental herbal medicine Bofu-tsusho-san in obesity hypertension: a multicenter, randomized, parallel-group controlled trial (ATH-D-14-01021.R2).

Objective: There is no clinical evidence that supports the benefit of integrative medicine, defined as combination therapy of oriental and western medicine, on obesity-related hypertension. This study evaluates the efficacy of Bofu-tsusho-san (BOF), an oriental herbal medicine, on the ambulatory blood pressure (BP) profile in hypertensive patients with obesity.

Methods: The study design was a multicenter, randomized, open-label, parallel-group controlled trial in 107 hypertensive patients with obesity.

The prognostic implications of infra-diaphragmatic (InD) versus supra-diaphragmatic (SpD) primary lesions in limited-stage diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) remains unknown. This retrospective study aimed to assess the prognostic impact of spD and InD lesions as well as presence of gastrointestinal (GI) involvements in adults with limited-stage DLBCL. We analyzed data from 178 patients with limited-stage DLBCL who were treated with rituximab plus cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone therapy at 7 institutions of the Yokohama City University Hematology Group between 2003 and 2009.

[Case of portal venous gas and pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis occurring during chemotherapy for a castration-resistant prostate cancer].

Portal venous gas is a rare complication. We present a case of hepatic portal venous gas (HPVG) and pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) in a patient treated with docetaxel for prostate cancer. An 80-year-old man with castration-resistant prostate cancer received 5 cycles of docetaxel.

The relationship between emotional suppression and psychological distress in breast cancer patients after surgery.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between emotional suppression and psychological distress in breast cancer patients after surgery. We examined this relationship using questionnaires at the first visit to the breast cancer outpatient clinic at our hospital and after surgery, as well as interviews after surgery.

Methods: A total of 31 breast cancer patients were asked to complete the Courtauld Emotional Control Scale and the Profile of Mood States at their first visit to the outpatient clinic.

Fascia implantation with fibroblast growth factor on vocal fold paralysis.

Purpose: The purpose of this prospective study was to determine the effect of autologous transplantation of fascia into the vocal fold (ATFV) with controlled release of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) on unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP) in a rat model.

Materials And Methods: Unilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) section was performed on 15 rats. Ten rats received an autologous fascia implant and gelatin hydrogel with or without bFGF (1 μg) to their larynxes (fascia only, "fascia group"; bFGF + fascia, "fascia + bFGF group"), while the rest underwent RLN transection ("RLN section group").

[A case of local-recurring breast cancer under long term-treatment by capecitabine].

A 57-year-old woman had undergone a modified radical mastectomy at another medical institute. Six years after the resection, a tumor was confirmed and diagnosed as a recurrent metastasis in the right margin of the breastbone. The patient underwent chemoradiation therapy at the other medical institute and was then transferred to our institute, where treatment was continued.

[A case of open head injury caused by electric saw].

A rare case of traumatic injury caused by an electric saw is herein described. A 75-year-old male patient was admitted to our hospital as an emergency patient. At the time of the patient's admission, he was fully conscious with no neurological deficits.

[A case of possible retroperitoneal metastasis of breast cancer successfully treated with oral S-1 and cyclophosphamide therapy after TC therapy].

We report a case of possible retroperitoneal metastasis of breast cancer successfully treated with oral S-1 and cyclophosphamide therapy after docetaxel and cyclophosphamide (TC) therapy. A 57-year-old woman with a history of bilateral breast cancer showed an increase in tumor markers during treatment with oral anastrozole as postoperative adjuvant therapy 4 years after her second cancer surgery. After careful examination, the patient was diagnosed as having multiple bone metastases and her medication was changed to oral letrozole.

Central nervous system involvement in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma.

Background: Malignant lymphoma with central nervous system (CNS) involvement has an extremely poor prognosis. We retrospectively studied the risk factors for CNS involvement in patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) treated by cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone (CHOP) or rituximab (R) -CHOP chemotherapy.

Patients And Methods: We studied 375 consecutive patients who were newly diagnosed with DLBCL between 1996 and 2006.

Direct action of an angiotensin II receptor blocker on angiotensin II-induced left atrial conduction delay in spontaneously hypertensive rats.

In this study, the inhibitory action of angiotensin II (Ang II) receptor blocker (ARB) on Ang II-induced conduction blocking in the left atrium was studied. Transmembrane action potentials and effective refractory period (ERP) were recorded from the left atrial trabeculae of spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR(Izm)s) that had been treated with or without olmesartan medoxomil (AT1 receptor blocker, 3.0 mg kg(-1)) for 8 weeks before the recording.

Antitumor effect of combination of S-1 and docetaxel on the human breast cancer xenograft transplanted into SCID mice.

In vivo experiments were performed on breast cancer xenografts to examine whether the combination therapy with S-1, an oral dihydrouracil dehydrogenase (DPD) inhibitory fluoropyrimidine, plus docetaxel functions as an additive/synergistic modulator in tumor growth. The human breast cancer xenograft, MDA-MB-435SHM, was inoculated into SCID female mice. The tumor growth and thymidylate synthase (TS)/DPD activity of tumors treated with the agents were investigated.

Paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration with fallopian tube adenocarcinoma.

Background: Paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration (PCD) is rarely caused by fallopian tube adenocarcinoma.

Case: We present a patient with PCD and fallopian tube cancer. Anti-Yo antibody, one of an anti-neuronal antibody, was positive in serum and cerebrospinal fluid.

Successful stent placement for cervical artery dissection associated with the Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. Case report and review of the literature.

This 44-year-old man with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) Type IV presented with hemiparesis and the Gerstmann syndrome. Left carotid artery (CA) angiography revealed a dissecting aneurysm with severe stenosis located in the common CA; the lesion was successfully treated with a stent graft. The patient's clinical course after endovascular surgery was uneventful, without occurrence of megacolon.

Expression of CD44 in primary lung carcinomas using histological and cytological analyses.

CD44 is a family of transmembrane glycoproteins expressed in hematopoietic and epithelial cells, and associated with diverse physiological functions such as cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions. CD44 exists in a standard form, CD44s, and in multiple isoforms which are produced by alternative splicing of the variant exons (exon v1 to exon v10) encoding parts of the extracellular domain. Recently, CD44 was shown to play a role in the invasive and metastatic properties of tumor cells.

Development of multiple cerebral arteriovenous malformations documented in an adult by serial angiography. Case report.

A 50-year-old woman with a parietal intracerebral hematoma was initially treated by hematoma evacuation. Initial preoperative and follow-up angiograms obtained 6 months later demonstrated no pial arteriovenous malformations (AVMs). She suffered a subarachnoid hemorrhage 8 years later.

Bcl-2 expression in breast cancer is down-regulated by trans-arterial administration of chemotherapeutic agents.

Bcl-2 is one of the cytoplasmic oncoproteins, and has been shown to suppress apoptotic cell death. In this study, we investigated the relationship between Bcl-2 expression and effects of chemotherapeutic agents on human breast cancer cells. We examined 26 surgically resected breast tumors with preoperative trans-arterial administration of chemotherapeutic agents and 30 control cases using immunohistochemical methods.

Collecting duct carcinoma mixed with common renal cell carcinoma: analysis of morphological characteristics using lectin histochemistry.

Recently, cases of collecting duct carcinoma have been reported which were thought to have arisen from the renal collecting ducts or distal tubuli. We present here a rare case of collecting duct carcinoma mixed with common (conventional) renal cell carcinoma. A 51-year-old man underwent right nephrectomy under the diagnosis of renal tumor.

In Vitro and In Vivo Modulation of Growth Regulation in the Human Breast Cancer Cell Line MCF-7 by Estradiol Metabolites.

BACKGROUND: The natural estrogen 17 beta-estradiol (E2) functions as a potent tumor promoter during tumorigenic transformation of the mammary gland. From amongst the various pathways of E2 metabolism upregulation of C16 alpha-hydroxylation of E2 has been associated with carcinogenesis. In the present study in vitro and in vivo experiments were performed on estrogen receptor positive human breast cancer MCF-7 cells to examine whether the natural estrogen E2 and its metabolites 16 alpha-hydroxyestrone (16 alpha-OHE1) and 2-hydroxyestrone (2-OHE1)function as modulators of tumor cell growth.

[Nocturnal oxygen desaturation during home oxygen therapy in patients with chronic respiratory disease].

We investigated nocturnal oxygen desaturation (NOD) in 36 patients with stable chronic respiratory disease who were receiving home oxygen, therapy (HOT). Study data included medical history, chest roentgenograms, measurement of daytime arterial blood gases while awake, and spirometry. Each subject underwent full overnight oximetry monitoring.

A canine model of intracranial arteriovenous shunt with acute cerebral venous hypertension.

Increased pressure of draining veins in intracranial arteriovenous fistula is considered an important cause of clinical symptoms. To investigate hemodynamic changes in intracranial arteriovenous fistula with cerebral venous hypertension, we developed a new canine model of this condition. A lingual artery-superior sagittal sinus (SSS) shunt was constructed using a section of the femoral artery as an interposed graft; immediately after which, monitoring of SSS pressure (SSSP) and regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) was started.
