Article Synopsis
  • This study investigated the roles of different types of hysterectomy (simple vs. modified radical) in treating endometrial cancer in a collaborative setting involving 11 medical institutions over a period of 11 years.
  • It analyzed data from 1,335 patients who underwent surgery, highlighting that 73.6% had a simple hysterectomy while 26.4% had a modified radical hysterectomy.
  • The findings revealed no significant difference in local recurrence rates between the two surgical methods, suggesting that the more extensive modified radical hysterectomy may not be necessary for effective treatment.

In a canine rapid atrial stimulation model of atrial fibrillation (AF), we have demonstrated an increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) along with electrical and structural remodeling. In the present study, we hypothesized that antioxidants can suppress atrial remodeling canines with AF. We therefore evaluated the effect of febuxostat, a xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibitor and a pure antioxidant, on atrial remodeling.

The most important risk factor for severe respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection is considered young age due to the immature immune system. The risk at young age is reported greater for RSV than for other respiratory infectious agents. Based on the strong association between young age and severity of RSV infection due to immature immunity, we aimed to assess whether there were any age-related differences in fever responses, as one clinical aspect of the immune response.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers developed a prognostic index called SIL, which assesses advanced stage, soluble interleukin-2 receptor levels, and elevated lactate dehydrogenase levels in DLBCL patients treated with R-CHOP.
  • The study evaluated the SIL index in a larger group of patients, finding that those with a high SIL index (2 or 3) had significantly lower five-year progression-free survival (53%) compared to those with a standard-risk SIL index (0 or 1) at 79%.
  • The SIL index proved to be a reliable and straightforward prognostic tool for predicting progression-free survival across different age groups and levels of extranodal involvement.

We verified the association between standard clinical and laboratory variables and the risk of relapse in acute myeloid leukemia (AML), which led us to retrospectively examine the effect of regeneration of hematopoiesis in patients with newly diagnosed AML. We used data from 230 patients who obtained remission after cytarabine-based induction chemotherapy. Platelet counts ≥500 × 10/L and hemoglobin levels ≥9 g/dL on day 28 after treatment initiation were significantly associated with relapse-free survival (RFS) rate, conferring respective multivariate risk ratios of 0.

Useful prognostic markers for patients with diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) have been reported. To identify which biomarker best predicts the prognosis of patients with DLBCL, we performed a retrospective study that included 319 DLBCL patients who had received rituximab, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisolone (R-CHOP) therapy between 2003 and 2012. We assessed the prognostic significance of six biomarkers [lactate dehydrogenase, soluble interleukin-2 receptor, thymidine kinase activity, beta-2 microglobulin (B2M), C-reactive protein, and ferritin] and representative clinical characteristics using progression-free survival (PFS) as the endpoint.

Purpose: Dexamethasone, plus a 5-HT3 receptor antagonist and an NK-1 receptor antagonist are recommended for controlling the chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) of highly emetogenic chemotherapy. Several days of dexamethasone are effective for CINV; however, dexamethasone also has side effects. The purpose of this trial was to investigate whether the use of a second-generation 5-HT3 receptor antagonist and an NK-1 receptor antagonist could allow a reduced dose of dexamethasone for breast cancer patients receiving highly emetogenic chemotherapy.
