The functional role of the biceps femoris short head (BFsh) remains unclear. Clarifying the functional role of each biceps femoris head may provide useful insights into the reduction of biceps femoris long head (BFlh) injuries. This study aimed to clarify whether the passive tension in the BFlh would change with BFsh detachment using cadavers.

Background: In Japan, since 2014, new treatments such as androgen receptor signaling inhibitors and cabazitaxel have become applicable for metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC), leading to dramatic changes in treatment options.
Objective: This study aims to evaluate the impact of recent advancements in treatment options on the overall survival (OS) of patients diagnosed with de novo metastatic castration-sensitive prostate cancer (mCSPC) in Japan.
Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 2450 Japanese men diagnosed with de novo mCSPC between 2008 and 2018.

Lenalidomide (LEN) is commonly used as an effective therapeutic agent for multiple myeloma (MM). However, in some patients, primary resistance to LEN is observed, the mechanisms of which remain poorly understood. In this study, we combined a LEN sensitivity assay with proteomics data from 15 MM cell lines to identify protein expression profiles associated with primary LEN resistance.

The involvement of drug-metabolizing enzymes and transporters in plasma clozapine (CLZ) dynamics has not been well examined in Japanese patients with treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS). Therefore, this clinical study investigated the relationship between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of various pharmacokinetic factors (drug-metabolizing enzymes and transporters) and dynamic changes in CLZ. Additionally, we aimed to determine whether CLZ acts as a substrate for pharmacokinetic factors using in vitro assays and molecular docking calculations.

Graft copolymers have gained significant importance in various fields due to their tunable functionality and well-defined architecture. However, there are still limitations due to the compatibility of monomers and functional groups depending on the polymerization mode. Click chemistry has solved this problem through its ability to easily and quantitatively link a wide range of polymers and functional groups.

The Asian longhorned tick, Haemaphysalis longicornis Neumann (Ixodida: Ixodidae), is widely distributed across temperate East Asia, including Japan, and carries a variety of zoonotic diseases. The species includes bisexual and parthenogenetic lineages. Various aspects of these two lineages, such as their abundance ratio, genetic relationship, and population structure, remain unknown in island environments such as Japan that are isolated from the mainland.

In the marine realm, unidirectional ocean currents often lead to high migration rates of marine organisms and, therefore, inhibit the formation of their latitudinal genetic structure. In contrast, cryptic latitudinal structures associated with local adaptation may frequently exist in widespread species generally exposed to a strong environmental heterogeneity. However, our understanding of the evolvability of locally adapted populations in open marine environments still needs to be completed.

Background: In the first-line treatment of elderly patients with advanced-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) with high programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression (tumor proportion score ≥ 50%), this study aimed to determine whether pembrolizumab monotherapy (MONO) or pembrolizumab plus platinum-based chemotherapy (COMB) should be selected.
Methods: We performed a retrospective multicenter study (sub-analysis of the HOT/NJLCG2001 trial) of 299 patients with NSCLC with high PD-L1 expression who received MONO or COMB as the first-line treatment between December 2018 and January 2020. We selected patients aged 75 years and older and assessed the clinical efficacy and toxicity.

This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of a hypothetical biennial weight management regimen in reducing the necessity for knee replacement (KR) surgery among middle-aged and older adults with or at a higher risk for knee osteoarthritis (OA). Data from the Osteoarthritis Initiative cohort in the US, comprising community-dwelling adults aged 45-79 years at high risk for or with symptomatic knee OA who underwent baseline assessments from September 2008 to December 2010 were used. Subsequent evaluations were conducted at 12, 24, and 96 months.

Sustainable energy societies demand rechargeable batteries using ubiquitous-material electrodes of geopolitical-risk-free elements. We aim to develop low-overpotential oxygen-evolution-reaction (OER) catalysts that suppress carbon corrosion of gas-diffusion electrodes (GDEs) to realize two-electrode rechargeable Zn-air batteries (r-ZABs). Herein, single-walled-carbon-nanotube (SWNT) thin films are used as a scaffold for a benchmark OER catalyst, doping-free NiFe-layered double hydroxide (NiFeLDHs), operating in r-ZABs using alkali aqueous electrolytes.

An outbreak of influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 viruses exhibiting cross-resistance to oseltamivir and peramivir occurred in Yokohama, Japan, in September 2024. Among 24 students in a class, 11 were diagnosed with influenza or influenza-like illness, and viruses harbouring the NA H275Y and HA Q210H substitutions were isolated from four. Deep sequencing analysis confirmed the clonal spread of these mutants.

Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) based on hyperfluorescent system have attracted widespread attention due to their ability to simultaneously achieve improvements in efficiency, lifetime, and color purity by combining the advantages of high exciton utilization sensitizers and high-color purity emitters. Traditional hyperfluorescent systems typically involve three or four components and are severely sensitive to the doping concentration (≈0.5 wt%) of a terminal emitter, which inevitably causes high costs and difficulties in reproducibility.

The challenge in developing molecule-based electronic materials lies in the uncontrollable or unpredictable nature of their crystal structures, which are crucial for determining both electrical properties and thin-film formability. This review summarizes the findings of a research project focused on the systematic development of crystalline organic semiconductors (OSCs) and organic ferroelectrics by integrating experimental, computational, and data sciences. The key outcomes are as follows: 1) Data Science: We developed a method to identify promising materials from crystal structure databases, leading to the discovery of unique molecule-based ferroelectrics.

This study aimed to evaluate the association between family structure and healthy life expectancy among older Japanese adults, hypothesizing that social participation increases healthy life expectancy more in older men without a spouse than in older women. This study collected data on Healthy Life Expectancy from 541 older adults between 2003 and 2021 from the Healthy Life Expectancy Study, a cohort study of older adults in Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan. The Japanese long-term care insurance system serves as an indicator of a healthy life expectancy.
