Objectives Guidelines in several countries recommend against driving soon after a stroke; however, some patients resume driving within one month after onset. This study aimed to examine the relationship between neurological and social background factors at intensive care unit (ICU) admission and resumption of motor vehicle driving within 30 days of the first acute stroke/cerebral hemorrhage. Materials and methods Data were extracted from medical records of a single center linked to the National Cerebral and Cardiovascular Center Administration Office for Stroke Data Bank in Japan.

Background: Locoregional surgical pathology, with surgical margins at the primary site and lymph node (LN) metastasis, particularly extranodal extension (ENE), plays an important role in the prognosis of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). In addition, systemic inflammatory response and nutritional status are associated with poor prognosis.
Purpose: This study aimed to comprehensively assess the effect of inflammatory markers and locoregional factors on the prognosis of patients with OSCC who underwent neck dissection (ND).

Background: Inclusion of additional influenza A/H3N2 strains in seasonal influenza vaccines could expand coverage against multiple, antigenically distinct, cocirculating A/H3N2 clades and potentially replace the no longer circulating B/Yamagata strain. We aimed to evaluate the safety and immunogenicity of three next-generation seasonal influenza mRNA vaccines with different compositions that encode for haemagglutinins of multiple A/H3N2 strains, with or without the B/Yamagata strain, in adults.
Methods: This randomised, open-label, phase 1/2 trial enrolled healthy adults aged 50-75 years across 22 sites in the USA.

Introduction: The optimal time for vascular access (VA) creation remains controversial.
Methods: We conducted a cohort study using data from the Japanese Society for Dialysis Therapy Renal Data Registry. Adult patients who started receiving hemodialysis in 2007 and had a permanent VA created were included.

Influenza B viruses (IBVs) primarily infect humans and are a common cause of respiratory infections in humans. Here, to systematically analyze the antigenicity of the IBVs Hemagglutinin (HA) protein, 31 B/Victoria and 19 B/Yamagata representative circulating strains were selected from Global Initiative of Sharing All Influenza Data (GISAID), and pseudotyped viruses were constructed with the vesicular stomatitis virus system. Guinea pigs were immunized with three doses of vaccines (one dose of DNA vaccines following two doses of pseudotyped virus vaccines) of the seven IBV vaccine strains, and neutralizing antibodies against the pseudotyped viruses were tested.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the utility of auditory steady-state responses (ASSRs) to narrow-band chirps (NB-chirps) for estimating hearing levels in children.
Design: Thresholds from the NB-chirp ASSR were evaluated in 30 sedated children with normal hearing or hearing loss. The correlation between the NB-chirp ASSR and pure-tone audiometry (PTA) thresholds was analyzed, and the difference score (DS) between these thresholds was calculated.

Mitochondria are essential for cellular functions, such as energy production. Human mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), encoding 13 distinct genes, two rRNA, and 22 tRNA, is crucial for maintaining vital functions, along with nuclear-encoded mitochondrial proteins. However, mtDNA is prone to somatic mutations due to replication errors and reactive oxygen species exposure.

Purpose: Inborn errors of metabolism (IEM) are known with poor long-term health concerns; however, the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and the burden placed on families remain unclear. This study investigated the self- and proxy-reported HRQoL of pediatric patients with IEM with or without developmental disabilities and the burden placed on their caregivers.
Methods: Patients with IEM aged 8-15 years and their caregivers were asked to respond to the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL), EuroQoL five-dimension questionnaire for younger populations (EQ-5D-Y), and Japanese version of the Zarit Caregiver Burden Interview (J-ZBI).

Objective: During total arch replacement (TAR) using frozen elephant trunk (FET) technique with Frozenix for true thoracic aortic aneurysm (tTAA), oversized FET tends to be chosen similar to the endovascular devise selection. However, the oversized FET is considered a risk factor for intimal injury. The appropriate size selection of FET remains insufficiently understood.

Hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) are pericytes of the liver responsible for liver fibrosis and cirrhosis, which are the end stages of chronic liver diseases. TGF-β activates HSCs, leading to the differentiation of myofibroblasts in the process of liver fibrosis. While the heterogeneity of HSCs is appreciated in the fibrotic liver, it remains elusive which HSC subsets mainly contribute to fibrosis.

Gremlin 1 (GREM1) is an antagonist of bone morphogenetic protein (BMP). GREM1 is expressed in the stromal cells of various carcinomas and promotes tumor progression by suppressing BMP signaling. We designed this study to establish an evaluation strategy for GREM1 expression, focusing on the tumor stroma, and to examine its clinicopathological significance in gastric cancer (GC) progression.

Histiocytic neoplasms (HNs) in adults have been reported to be associated with a high prevalence of coexisting haematological and solid malignancies. While a proportion of coexisting HNs and haematological malignancies share identical genetic alterations, the genetic association between HNs and solid malignancies has scarcely been reported. We report a case of Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD) complicated by coexisting clear cell sarcoma (CCS).

In female eutherian mammal development, X-chromosome inactivation (XCI) of one of the two X chromosomes is initiated early. Understanding the relationship between the initiation of XCI and cell fate is critical for understanding early female development and requires a system that can monitor XCI in single living cells. Traditional embryonic stem cells (ESCs) used for XCI studies often lose X chromosomes spontaneously during culture and differentiation, making accurate monitoring difficult.

The human gut microbiota produces diverse, extensive metabolites that have the potential to affect host physiology. Despite significant efforts to identify metabolic pathways for producing these microbial metabolites, a comprehensive metabolic pathway database for the human gut microbiota is still lacking. Here, we present Enteropathway, a metabolic pathway database that integrates 3269 compounds, 3677 reactions, and 876 modules that were obtained from 1012 manually curated scientific literature.

The risk of virus transmission via the touching of contaminated masks has long been assumed by infection control teams. Yet, robust evidence to support this belief has been lacking. This risk was investigated in a laboratory setting by measuring the amount of viable influenza virus successfully transferred from artificially contaminated medical (surgical) mask surfaces to a human finger used to swipe their outer surface under various experimental conditions.
