Article Synopsis
  • The study explores the differences in knee biomechanics during walking between males and females with knee osteoarthritis (KOA) to understand why females have a higher prevalence of this condition.
  • It identifies that females with KOA exhibit distinct knee movement patterns compared to males, while healthy females show different biomechanics than their male counterparts.
  • The findings suggest that the differences in biomechanics may be linked to the presence of KOA, but due to low quality evidence, further research is necessary to draw definitive conclusions.

The Bonin Islands, comprised of the Mukojima, Chichijima, and Hahajima Islands, are known for their isolated and distinctive habitats, hosting a diverse array of endemic flora and fauna. In these islands, adaptive radiation has played a remarkable role in speciation, particularly evident in the genus that is represented by three species: and exclusive to the Chichijima Islands, and , distributed across the entire Bonin Islands. Notably, exhibits multiple ecotypes, differing in leaf hair density, flowering time, and tree size.

Background: The withdrawal or continuation of angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) before surgery continues to be debated. We hypothesized that this is because ARBs with different half-lives have not been studied individually. This retrospective study aimed to clarify whether the degree of hypotension during anesthesia induction differs among ARBs with different half-lives.

The commonly used lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced depression models often evaluate depression-like behaviors in the acute phase after a single intraperitoneal injection of LPS, and are not suitable for examining long-term depression-like behaviors. To overcome this limitation, we developed a mice LPS model for elucidating the long-term pathophysiology of depression. Using the tail-suspension test, we show that a single intraperitoneal injection of a high dose (1.

Perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) polymers are used as electrolyte membranes in polymer electrolyte fuel cells. To investigate the effect on proton conductivity through structural orientation control, we added 1,2,4-triazole to PFSA films during casting to impart anisotropy to the ion-cluster structure of the films. The proton conductivities of the films were found to be high in the film-surface direction and low in the film-thickness direction.

Radiation therapy continues to be the cornerstone treatment for malignant brain tumors, the majority of which express wild-type p53. Therefore, the identification of drugs that promote the ionizing radiation (IR)-induced activation of p53 is expected to increase the efficacy of radiation therapy for these tumors. The growth inhibitory effects of CEP-1347, a known inhibitor of MDM4 expression, on malignant brain tumor cell lines expressing wild-type p53 were examined, alone or in combination with IR, by dye exclusion and/or colony formation assays.

Graduate School of Advanced Mathematical and Science, Meiji University, 4-21-1 Nakano, Nakano-ku, Tokyo, 164-8525, Japan. Electronic address:

The tertiary lymphoid structure (TLS) plays a central role in cancer immune response, and its gene expression pattern, called the TLS signature, has shown prognostic value in breast cancer. The formation of TLS and tumor-associated high endothelial venules (TA-HEVs), responsible for lymphocytic infiltration within the TLS, is associated with the expression of cancer hallmark genes (CHGs) related to immunity and inflammation. In this study, we performed co-expression network analysis of immune- and inflammation-related CHGs to identify predictive genes for breast cancer.

Background: D2 and para-aortic lymph node dissection (PAND) following neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) are reportedly effective for gastric cancer (GC) with extensive lymph node metastasis (ELM), such as para-aortic nodal metastasis or bulky nodal metastasis, around the major perigastric arteries. However, type 4 and large type 3 tumors were excluded from previous studies, as they are considered special subtypes that easily spread to the peritoneum. Whether or not PAND contributes to the survival of type 4 or large type 3GC with ELM is thus unclear.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to investigate how Helicobacter pylori infection affects gastric lesions in patients with non-eosinophilic gastrointestinal diseases (non-EoE EGIDs).
  • A review of 75 patients found that common gastric findings included erythema, erosions, ulcers, and edema, with no significant differences based on gastric mucosal atrophy, which indicates H. pylori infection.
  • The researchers concluded that gastric ulcers in non-EoE EGIDs should be considered when diagnosing idiopathic peptic ulcers, as there was no specific pattern in lesion frequency related to atrophic gastritis.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on the four key driver genes (KRAS, CDKN2A, TP53, SMAD4) in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), with KRAS and TP53 being the most common mutations.
  • Researchers developed organoids with KRAS mutations and TP53 loss of function to analyze how these mutations affect cellular processes, specifically highlighting enhanced glycolysis in the double-mutant organoids.
  • They identified triosephosphate isomerase (TPI1) as a potential therapeutic target, as its loss decreased cell proliferation in PDAC cells with TP53 mutations, present in about 70% of PDAC patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Development of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) can complicate cancer treatment, leading to dose reductions or stopping therapy; Goshajinkigan (GJG), a traditional Japanese medicine, may help reduce these symptoms.
  • A study with 55 ovarian cancer patients tested two groups: one started GJG after experiencing grade 2 neuropathy, while the other took it a week before chemotherapy; the main goals were to assess sensory neuropathy severity and pain levels.
  • Results showed that patients starting GJG early (Group B) had fewer pain complaints, lower reliance on pain medications, and less persistent neuropathy six months later, suggesting that preventive use of GJG could be beneficial, but more research is needed for confirmation

The high intrinsic water-use efficiency of Erianthus may be due to the low abaxial stomatal density and the accumulation of leaf metabolites such as betaine and gamma-aminobutyric acid. Sugarcane is an important crop that is widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Because drought is among the main impediments limiting sugarcane production in these regions, breeding of drought-tolerant sugarcane varieties is important for sustainable production.
