Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the risk factors for residual stress urinary incontinence after successful closure of vesico-vaginal fistula (VVF), noting that previous findings on predictors have been inconsistent.
  • - Conducted over seven years with women from multiple centers, it involved a cough test at three months post-operation to assess urinary continence, finding that 16.3% of patients had residual incontinence despite successful fistula closure.
  • - Key predictors for residual incontinence identified included urethro-vesical junction involvement, previous fistula repair, and type 3 classifications of Goh's system, highlighting the need for better management of urinary incontinence post-surgery.

Centre d'Epidémiologie et de Recherche en santé des POPulations (CERPOP), French National Institute for Health and Medical Research (Inserm), University of Toulouse 3, UMR 1295, Toulouse, France Research Associate.

Introduction: We describe the 24-month incidence of Dolutegravir (DTG)-containing antiretroviral treatment (ART) initiation since its introduction in 2019 in West Africa.

Methods: We included all patients aged 0-24 years on ART from nine clinics in Côte d'Ivoire (n=4), Ghana, Nigeria, Mali, Benin, and Burkina Faso. Baseline varied by clinic and was defined as date of first DTG prescription; patients were followed up until database closure/death/loss to follow-up (LTFU, no visit ≥ 7 months), whichever came first.

Background: Cervical Cancer stands as the second leading cause of both incident female cancers and deaths in Burkina Faso. Unfortunately, the prevention, early detection, and care of cervical cancers are suboptimal at individual, institutional, and national levels. In October 2023, we organized a stakeholder's workshop to develop cervical cancer awareness messaging for disease control in the country.

Introduction: To improve and maintain quality and safety in anesthesia, standards have been proposed regarding human resources, facilities and equipment, medications and intravenous fluids, monitoring, and the conduct of anesthesia. Compliance with these standards remains a challenge in French-speaking sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and results in high morbidity and mortality particularly in children. This aim of this study was to assess the progress made in improving the pediatric anesthesia infrastructures, human resources, education, medications, and equipment in French-speaking SSA over the past 10 years (2013-2022).

Introduction: The frequency of immuno-allergic dermatoses (IAD) is gradually overtaking that of infectious dermatoses in sub-Saharan Africa. The aim of this study was to identify the epidemioclinical profile and the determinants of IAD in children of 0-5 years old at the University Clinics of Kinshasa (UCK).

Methods: This was a documentary and descriptive study that focused on children from 0 to 5 years old with IAD, over an 11-year period from 2011 to 2021.

Arterial priapism, rare and often traumatic, is generally associated with cavernous arterial lesions. We report an unprecedented case in a 17-year-old adolescent, occurring spontaneously after severe dengue, expanding the understanding of this pathology. No similar association has been previously documented in the literature.

Background: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) elimination requires expanding and decentralising HBV care services. However, peripheral health facilities lack access to diagnostic tools to assess eligibility for antiviral therapy. Through the Hepatitis B in Africa Collaborative Network (HEPSANET), we aimed to develop and evaluate a score using tests generally available at lower-level facilities, to simplify the evaluation of antiviral therapy eligibility in people living with HBV.

The foramen magnum approach is always challenging because of the relationships between vital neurovascular structures in this area. Several approaches have been described, among them, the far lateral approach remains a cornerstone for the resection of anterior or anterolateral processes of the foramen magnum. This approach displays two main steps: the first is cervical, whereas the second is cranial.

Background: Elimination of mother-to-child transmission of hepatitis B virus (HBV) requires infant immunoprophylaxis and antiviral prophylaxis for pregnant women with high viral loads. Since real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), a gold standard for assessing antiviral eligibility, is neither accessible nor affordable for women living in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) detecting alternative HBV markers may be needed. To inform future development of the target product profile (TPP) for RDTs to identify highly viremic women, we used a discrete choice experiment (DCE) and elicited preference and trade-off of healthcare workers (HCW) in Africa between the following four attributes of fictional RDTs: price, time-to-result, diagnostic sensitivity, and specificity.

To date, 43 blood group systems with 349 red blood cell (RBC) antigens have been recognized. The study of their distribution is useful for blood services to improve their supply strategies for providing blood of rare phenotypes, but also to design indigenous RBC panels for alloantibody screening and identification. In Burkina Faso, the distribution of extended blood group antigens is not known.
