Objective: This study examined the risk of incarceration among cohorts of veterans treated in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Connecticut Healthcare System. Incarceration rates of persons with and without mental illness were compared and adjusted for various clinical and service utilization variables. Data were compared before and after the closure of over 80% of the Connecticut VA psychiatric inpatient beds in 1996.

Background: There is a paucity of data on the efficacy of nitrofurantoin for the treatment of acute uncomplicated cystitis in regimens shorter than 7 days. Evidence-based use of this drug is increasingly important as trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole resistance among uropathogens increases.

Methods: To assess the efficacy of nitrofurantoin vs trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, 338 women aged 18 to 45 years with acute uncomplicated cystitis were randomized to open-label treatment with either trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, 1 double-strength tablet twice daily for 3 days, or nitrofurantoin, 100 mg twice daily for 5 days.

[123I]2beta-carbomethoxy-3beta-(4-iodophenyl)tropane ([123I]-CIT) and its isopropylester analog [123I]PCIT, both of which are phenyltropane derivatives of cocaine with high affinity for the dopamine (DA) transporter, were compared using single photon emission computed tomography in nonhuman primates. Although IPCIT is significantly more selective for the DA transporter than beta-CIT, striatal distribution volumes of specifically bound tracer were similar for both tracers. Compartmental modeling results were compared with a simple peak equilibrium method used previously by this group.

beta-L-1,3-Dioxolane-cytidine (L-(-)-OddC) is a novel L-nucleoside, and its antitumor activity is under investigation in clinical trials. To evaluate the potential of L-(-)-OddC for treating hyperproliferative diseases of the skin, we examined its activity in human keratinocytes in vitro. The dose of L-(-)-OddC that inhibited the rate of proliferation of keratinocytes by 50% was 50 nM.
