Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) frequency is increasing in patients with cirrhosis and these individuals often experience acute kidney injury (AKI). Direct comparisons of outcomes between AKI-only vs. AKI on CKD (AoCKD) among patients with cirrhosis are not well described.

Primary squamous cell carcinoma (PSCC) of the pancreas is a rare malignancy with poor prognosis and unclear management. Here, we present the case of a patient with PSCC, review the literature, identify areas of therapeutic uncertainty, and conclude that more clinical and molecular data are needed to improve the prognosis of this rare malignancy.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) frequently complicates the course of hospitalized patients with cirrhosis and negatively affects their prognosis. How AKI response influences the timing of liver transplantation (LT) remains unclear. We sought to assess the impact of AKI response to treatment on survival and LT rates in patients with cirrhosis awaiting LT.

Background & Aims: Acute kidney injury (AKI) in cirrhosis is common and associated with high morbidity, but the incidence rates of different etiologies of AKI are not well described in the US. We compared incidence rates, practice patterns, and outcomes across etiologies of AKI in cirrhosis.
Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study of 11 hospital networks, including consecutive adult patients admitted with AKI and cirrhosis in 2019.

Caspases play a central role in apoptosis, inflammation, and fibrosis. They produce hemodynamically active, proinflammatory microparticles that cause intrahepatic inflammation, vasoconstriction, and extrahepatic splanchnic vasodilation. Emricasan is a pan-caspase inhibitor that lowers portal hypertension (PH) and improves survival in murine models of cirrhosis.

This paper reviews the distinct symptom profile, epidemiology, pathogenesis, assessment, and treatment of anxiety disorders. It highlights emerging neuroimaging research in mood and anxiety disorders in people with epilepsy. While structural neuroimaging has implicated frontal temporal grey matter structures in mood and anxiety disorders, diffusion tensor imaging and magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) show promise in elucidating white matter changes.

Candida albicans accumulates large amounts of the polyols glycerol and d-arabitol when the cells are exposed to physiological conditions relevant to stress and virulence in animals. Intracellular concentrations of glycerol are determined by rates of glycerol production and catabolism and of glycerol uptake and efflux through the plasma membrane. We and others have studied glycerol production in C.

Objective: This study examined the risk of incarceration among cohorts of veterans treated in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Connecticut Healthcare System. Incarceration rates of persons with and without mental illness were compared and adjusted for various clinical and service utilization variables. Data were compared before and after the closure of over 80% of the Connecticut VA psychiatric inpatient beds in 1996.

Background: There is a paucity of data on the efficacy of nitrofurantoin for the treatment of acute uncomplicated cystitis in regimens shorter than 7 days. Evidence-based use of this drug is increasingly important as trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole resistance among uropathogens increases.
Methods: To assess the efficacy of nitrofurantoin vs trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, 338 women aged 18 to 45 years with acute uncomplicated cystitis were randomized to open-label treatment with either trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, 1 double-strength tablet twice daily for 3 days, or nitrofurantoin, 100 mg twice daily for 5 days.

Candida albicans produces and accumulates large amounts of the polyols d-arabitol and glycerol in culture, and/or in infected mammalian tissues. However, the effects of environmental stresses on production and accumulation of these polyols, and the means by which polyol production and accumulation are regulated have not been studied. C.

Although IPCIT is significantly more selective for the DA transporter than beta-CIT, striatal distribution volumes of specifically bound tracer were similar for both tracers. Compartmental modeling results were compared with a simple peak equilibrium method used previously by this group.

beta-L-1,3-Dioxolane-cytidine (L-(-)-OddC) is a novel L-nucleoside, and its antitumor activity is under investigation in clinical trials. To evaluate the potential of L-(-)-OddC for treating hyperproliferative diseases of the skin, we examined its activity in human keratinocytes in vitro. The dose of L-(-)-OddC that inhibited the rate of proliferation of keratinocytes by 50% was 50 nM.
