Br J Nutr

December 2024

Department of Nutrition, Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Food, Nutrition and Health, School of Public Health, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, People's Republic of China.

Article Synopsis
  • Folate metabolism plays a role in cancer development, particularly in newly diagnosed hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), with specific attention to genetic variations (SNPs) affecting this process.
  • In a study involving 970 HCC patients, six SNPs related to folate metabolism were analyzed to see how they impact overall survival (OS) and liver cancer-specific survival (LCSS).
  • The rs1801394 polymorphism showed a significant association with better prognosis for HCC patients, suggesting that having protective genetic variations, especially alongside higher serum folate levels, leads to improved survival outcomes.

Associations of exposure to PM and its compounds with carotid intima-media thickness among middle-aged adults.

Sci Total Environ

December 2024

Department of Environmental Health Sciences, School of Public Health, University at Albany, State University of New York, Rensselaer, NY, USA. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Exposure to fine particulate matter (PM), particularly black carbon (BC), is linked to an increased thickness of carotid arteries, which is a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases.
  • The study analyzed data from 3,257 participants, examining how one-year exposure to various PM compounds affects carotid intima media thickness (cIMT) through linear regression and Bayesian kernel machine regression models.
  • Results indicated a significant correlation between higher BC exposure and increased cIMT, suggesting that specific PM compounds like BC may be better indicators of adverse cardiovascular health than just overall PM mass.

Article Synopsis
  • Physical activity (PA) both before and after a cancer diagnosis can lower the risk of mortality in cancer patients, as shown in studies involving large cohorts like the Women's Health Study and the Physicians' Health Study.
  • Participants who remained active or became active after their diagnosis showed significantly lower risks for all-cause, cancer-specific, and non-cancer-related mortality compared to those who remained inactive.
  • The findings suggest that encouraging physical activity in cancer patients might enhance survival, but further research is necessary to confirm these benefits across different types of cancers.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study analyzes how social isolation (SI) and population density in the US are related, particularly looking at how race/ethnicity might influence this relationship.
  • - The research indicates that while higher population density can reduce SI in areas with more people of the same race/ethnicity, it can actually increase SI in areas where there are fewer people of the same race/ethnicity.
  • - The findings suggest that policymakers should consider race/ethnicity when creating interventions to reduce SI among older adults in densely populated areas, potentially using zip code data for targeted approaches.
