A Co-porphyrin complex (1) with an appended aza-crown ether for Lewis acid (LA) binding was synthesized and characterized. NMR spectroscopy and electrochemistry show that cationic group I and II LAs (, Li, Na, K, Ca, Sr, and Ba) bind to the aza-crown ether group of 1. The binding constant for Li is comparable to that observed for a free aza-crown ether.

Article Synopsis
  • Over the years, the number of certain parasites, called anisakids, in Alaskan salmon has changed, with more found in chum and pink salmon.
  • Research was done on canned salmon from 1979 to 2019 to see how many worms were in the fish, showing an increase in some types but not others.
  • Because some marine mammals in Alaska are now protected and their populations are growing, this might be affecting the number of parasites in salmon.

  • Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) poses significant risks during and after pregnancy, with a study examining its characteristics in pregnant individuals compared to nonpregnant adults.
  • Among 134 young adults analyzed, 19% experienced pregnancy-associated ICH (P-ICH), primarily occurring in the postpartum period, and P-ICH showed a higher likelihood of being primary (spontaneous) compared to nonpregnant women.
  • Despite lower in-hospital mortality rates for P-ICH patients (4%) versus nonpregnant women (13%) and men (24%), a quarter of P-ICH patients were left bedbound or dependent upon discharge, indicating serious functional impairments.

The proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) reactions of tyrosine (Y) are instrumental to many redox reactions in nature. This study investigates how the local environment and the thermodynamic properties of Y influence its PCET characteristics. Herein, 2- and 4-mercaptophenol (MP) are placed in the well-folded αC protein (forming 2MP-αC and 4MP-αC) and oxidized by external light-generated [Ru(L)] complexes.

High-valent iron alkyl complexes are rare, as they are prone to Fe-C bond homolysis. Here, we describe an unusual way to access formally iron(iv) alkyl complexes through double silylation of iron(i) alkyl dinitrogen complexes to form an NNSi group. Spectroscopically validated computations show that the disilylehydrazido(2-) ligand stabilizes the formal iron(iv) oxidation state through a strongly covalent Fe-N π-interaction, in which one π-bond fits an "inverted field" description.

Article Synopsis
  • Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are linked to obesity, but their connection to weight cycling hasn't been thoroughly investigated, which is concerning given the challenges of maintaining weight loss and the stigma associated with obesity.
  • A study of 78 overweight/obese adults, mostly educated white women, found that higher ACE scores were significantly associated with a history of weight cycling, particularly in those with four or more ACEs.
  • This suggests that ACEs may influence patterns of weight loss and regain, indicating a need for further research to see how ACEs affect long-term weight loss success and the stigma surrounding obesity.

Social difficulties during interactions with others are central to autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Understanding the links between these social difficulties and their underlying neural processes is a primary aim focused on improved diagnosis and treatment. In keeping with this goal, we have developed a multivariate classification method based on neural data acquired by functional near infrared spectroscopy, fNIRS, during live eye-to-eye contact with adults who were either typically developed (TD) or individuals with ASD.

In recent years, considerable progress has been made in the conversion of biomass into renewable chemicals, yet the range of value-added products that can be formed from biomass remains relatively small. Herein, we demonstrate that molecules available from biomass serve as viable starting materials for the synthesis of phosphine ligands, which can be used in homogeneous catalysis. Specifically, we prepared renewable analogues of Beller's ligand (di(1-adamantyl)--butylphosphine, cataCXium® A), which is widely used in homogeneous catalysis.
