A significant outbreak of respiratory human adenovirus infections among children aged 3-6 years in Hokkaido, Japan, in 2023.

Human adenovirus (HAdV) infections present diverse clinical manifestations upon infecting individuals, with respiratory infections predominating in children. We surveyed pediatric hospitalizations due to respiratory HAdV infections across 18 hospitals in Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan, from July 2019 to March 2024, recording 473 admissions. While hospitalizations remained below five cases per week from July 2019 to September 2023, a notable surge occurred in late October 2023, with weekly admissions peaking at 15-20 cases from November to December.

Resurgence of human metapneumovirus infection and influenza after three seasons of inactivity in the post-COVID-19 era in Hokkaido, Japan, 2022-2023.

Following the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak in February 2020, incidences of various infectious diseases decreased notably in Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan. However, Japan began gradually easing COVID-19 infection control measures in 2022. Here, we conducted a survey of children hospitalized with human metapneumovirus (hMPV), influenza A and B, and respiratory syncytial virus infections in 18 hospitals across Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan, spanning from July 2019 to June 2023.

Efficacy of cognitive behavioral therapy using self-check sheet for patients with nocturia in real-world clinical practice.

Objectives: We previously demonstrated the efficacy of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) using a self-check sheet for patients with nocturia in a randomized controlled study. Additionally, we investigated the efficacy of the intervention in real-world clinical practice.

Methods: Two hundred forty-three outpatients with complaint of nocturia who practiced CBT for 4 weeks using a self-check sheet were included in this trial, which took place from April 2021 to March 2022 in 20 institutions.

Bilateral Humeral Retrotorsion Angle Measured Using an Ultrasound-Assisted Technique in Asian Baseball Players.

Background: Repetitive pitching is thought to restrict the physiological derotation process of the humeral head. Some studies have reported that side-to-side differences in the humeral retrotorsion angle (ΔHRA) occur between the ages of 9 and 11 years in baseball players. However, it remains unclear whether the ΔHRA in Asian baseball players depends on pitching skill or competitive level.

Changing Patterns of Infectious Diseases Among Hospitalized Children in Hokkaido, Japan, in the Post-COVID-19 Era, July 2019 to June 2022.

Background: Many reports have reported a reduction in respiratory infectious diseases and infectious gastroenteritis immediately after the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, but data continuing into 2022 are very limited. We sought to understand the current situation of various infectious diseases among children in Japan as of July 2022 to improve public health in the post-COVID-19 era.

Methods: We collected data on children hospitalized with infectious diseases in 18 hospitals in Japan from July 2019 to June 2022.

Correlation between antibiotic use and antibiotic resistance: A multicenter study using the Japan Surveillance for Infection Prevention and Healthcare Epidemiology (J-SIPHE) system in Hokkaido, Japan.

Background: The Japan Surveillance for Infection Prevention and Healthcare Epidemiology (J-SIPHE) system aggregates information related to antimicrobial resistance (AMR) measures in participating medical institutions nationwide and is intended to be used for promotion of AMR measures in participating facilities and their communities. This multicenter study aimed to determine the usefulness of the J-SIPHE system for evaluating the correlation between antibiotic use and antibiotic resistance in Hokkaido, Japan.

Methods: Data on antibiotic use and detection rate of major resistant Gram-negative bacteria at 19 hospitals in 2020 were collected from the J-SIPHE system, and data correlations were analyzed using JMP Pro.

Surveillance in hospitalized children with infectious diseases in Japan: Pre- and post-coronavirus disease 2019.

Introduction: The epidemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) rapidly spread worldwide, and the various infection control measures have a significant influence on the spread of many infectious diseases. However, there have been no multicenter studies on how the number of hospitalized children with various infectious diseases changed before and after the outbreak of COVID-19 in Japan.

Methods: We conducted a multicenter, prospective survey for hospitalized pediatric patients in 18 hospitals in Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan, from July 2019 to February 2021.

Stress-Distribution Pattern Across the Glenohumeral Joint in Collegiate and Professional Baseball Players: A Computed Tomography Osteoabsorptiometry Study.

Background: The influence of long-term loading conditions on the articular surfaces of the glenohumeral joint can be determined by measuring stress-distribution patterns. Long-term pitching activity changes the stress distribution across the glenohumeral joint surface; however, the influence of competitive level on stress-distribution patterns remains unclear.

Purpose: To use computed tomography (CT) osteoabsorptiometry (CTOAM) to evaluate the distribution of subchondral bone density across the glenohumeral joint in collegiate and professional baseball players as well as to determine the effects of pitching activity on the articular surfaces.

A 65-year-old man was admitted under emergency to our hospital because of abdominal pain. His current medication history did not include steroids or nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs. He had taken an eradication agent for Helicobacter pylori, and his serum was negative for H.

[A case of intussusceptions at two parts of the ileum caused by an ileus tube].

An 87-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital for paralytic ileus, and she was treated using an ileus tube. Although her symptoms improved, abdominal fullness developed again on day 3 after ileus tube insertion. Abdominal computed tomography indicated intussusceptions at the ileum and the terminal part of the ileum;therefore, an emergency surgery was performed.

Does Baseline Prostate Volume Affect the Short-Term Outcome of Tamsulosin?

Objective: To investigate the short-term efficacy of tamsulosin treatment for patients with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) suggestive of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) according to baseline prostate volume (PV).

Methods: Tamsulosin, 0.2 mg/day, was prospectively given to 112 patients aged 50 years or older who had International Prostate Symptom Scores (IPSS) ≥ 8.

Prevalence of prostatitis-like symptoms in Japanese men: Population-based study in a town in Hokkaido.

Aim: To determine the prevalence of prostatitis-like symptoms in Japanese men living in one town.

Methods: A cross-sectional and population-based study was performed in a town that had 6385 men aged from 20 to 79 years. We sent two questionnaires, the validated Japanese version of the National Institutes of Health Chronic Prostatitis Symptom Index and the International Prostate Symptom Score (I-PSS) with questions about individual medical information, to 1424 randomly selected community-indwelling men.

Retroperitoneal extragonadal germ cell tumor presenting as a bulky pelvic mass of the obturator fossa.

Extragonadal germ cell tumors (EGGCT) are commonly found in the midline of the body. We report a rare case of a retroperitoneal EGGCT presenting as a bulky pelvic mass located between the left internal and external iliac arteries in a 29-year-old man. His alpha-fetoprotein level was 12946.

Retroperitoneoscopic nephrectomy of a horseshoe kidney with renal-cell carcinoma.

A 55-year-old man had a solid tumor in the right part of a horseshoe kidney. He had previously undergone open cholecystectomy and appendectomy with panperitonitis. Retroperitoneoscopic nephrectomy was performed, with rapid recovery and good short-term results.

Spinal cord compression due to extramedullary hematopoiesis associated with polycythemia vera--case report.

A 69-year-old woman with a 14-year history of polycythemia vera suffered progressive paraparesis due to epidural involvement of hematopoietic tissue. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging demonstrated extensive epidural masses. Decompressive surgery and radiotherapy were performed and she made an almost complete clinical recovery.
