Article Synopsis
  • Sleep apnea is common among stroke patients in rehabilitation, especially those with dysphagia, but its prevalence and impact in this setting haven't been well-studied.* -
  • The study examined 196 stroke patients at a rehabilitation hospital in Japan to determine the prevalence and severity of sleep apnea and its relation to dysphagia.* -
  • Results showed that 93.4% of participants who completed the sleep test had sleep apnea, with nearly all (95.7%) of those with dysphagia affected, indicating significant correlations with their functional intake levels and body mass index.*

Background: Excessive tension at the anastomosis contributes to anastomotic leakage (AL) in low anterior resection (LAR). However, the specific tension has not been measured. We assessed whether "Bridging," characterized by the proximal colon resembling a suspension bridge above the pelvic floor, is a significant risk factor for AL following LAR for rectal cancer.

Objectives: Pain causal attribution is the attribution of pain causes to self or others, which may depend on one's choice of actions. The study aimed to examine how the cognitive processes of pain causal attribution as one aspect of the sense of agency change in healthy individuals based on free or forced choice, using a temporal binding (TB) experimental task.

Methods: Participants pressed keys (action) in a combined TB task, with one key having a high probability of delivering pain (with tone).

Importance: Recent evidence indicates the efficacy of β-amyloid immunotherapy for the treatment of Alzheimer disease, highlighting the need to promote β-amyloid removal from the brain. Cilostazol, a selective type 3 phosphodiesterase inhibitor, promotes such clearance by facilitating intramural periarterial drainage.

Objective: To determine the safety and efficacy of cilostazol in mild cognitive impairment.

This study aimed to quantitatively evaluate the influence of enhanced contrast on the CT myelography image of the spinal cord and/or cauda equina in addition to the target volume in spine SBRT treatment planning. In total, 19 patients who had previously undergone spine SBRT were randomly selected. The rigid image registration accuracy of CT myelography that aligned with the treatment planning CT was evaluated by calculating the normalized mutual information (NMI) and Pearson's correlation coefficient for the vertebral landmarks.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore how low-intensity resistance training affects knee extension strength in older adults, focusing on factors like intensity, frequency, and training duration.
  • A systematic review of seven studies involving 275 participants revealed that low-intensity resistance training significantly improved knee strength, especially when training at 50-60% of one repetition maximum (1RM) and with a frequency of three times per week.
  • The research concluded that low-intensity resistance training is an effective method for enhancing knee extension strength in older adults, recommending a training intensity of 50-60% 1RM and three weekly sessions for optimal results.

Introduction: Bowel obstruction at the outlet of the stoma, also referred to as "stoma outlet obstruction" (SOO), has been noted to be more common after laparoscopic colorectal surgery with diverting ileostomy than after laparotomy. Thus, the aim of this study is to identify the risk factors for SOO and to evaluate the effectiveness of a modified ileostomy procedure for reducing its incidence.

Methods: The medical records of 63 patients who underwent laparoscopic colorectal surgery with diverting ileostomy between January 2014 and July 2021 were retrospectively reviewed.
