Serum C-reactive protein greater than 75 mg/dL as an early available laboratory predictor of severe COVID-19: A systematic review.

Introduction: Severe COVID-19 management is still challenging. Having a laboratory factor to predict the severity of a patient's condition can be very useful in how to approach each patient. There have been studies concentrating on the correlation between serum C-reactive protein (CRP) level and COVID-19 severity but we aim to reach a threshold for CRP in disease severity determination.

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation with the injection of pethidine and promethazine in the labor pain reduction: A randomized controlled trial.

Background: The use of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) to relieve labor pain remains controversial and existing evidence is neither strong nor consistent. This research was designed to compare TENS' effect with the injection of pethidine and promethazine in labor pain reduction.

Methods: In this trial, for 45 pregnant women in the active phase of labor, TENS electrodes were placed (two on both arms, and two over the participants' low back) continuously for 120 minutes; and for another group 45 pregnant women, 100 milligrams of pethidine and 250 micrograms of promethazine were injected intramuscularly which could be repeated once at least one hour later.

Pregnancy outcomes of normal karyotype fetuses with increased nuchal translucency.

Background: Although the association between first-trimester increased nuchal translucency (NT) and chromosomal defects is well-defined, there is little knowledge about the importance of increased NT in fetuses with normal karyotypes. Hence, this study was designed to evaluate outcomes of normal karyotype fetuses with increased NT.

Methods: This observational retrospective study was conducted on 720 pregnancies with increased NT (>3mm) at 11 to 13 weeks of gestational age in Yas Hospital, Tehran, Iran, from 2016 to 2020.

Learner satisfaction with synchronous and asynchronous virtual learning systems during the COVID-19 pandemic in Tehran university of medical sciences: a comparative analysis.

Background: The need for electronic learning and its systems, especially during specific circumstances and crises, is crucial and fundamental for users in universities. However, what is even more important is the awareness and familiarity of learners with different systems and their appropriate use in e-learning. Therefore, the present study was conducted to determine the satisfaction of learners with synchronous and asynchronous electronic learning systems during the COVID-19 period at Tehran University of Medical Sciences.

A human pilot study on positive electrostatic charge effects in solid tumors of the late-stage metastatic patients.

Background: Correlative interactions between electrical charges and cancer cells involve important unknown factors in cancer diagnosis and treatment. We previously reported the intrinsic suppressive effects of pure positive electrostatic charges (PEC) on the proliferation and metabolism of invasive cancer cells without any effect on normal cells in cell lines and animal models. The proposed mechanism was the suppression of pro-caspases 3 and 9 with an increase in Bax/Bcl2 ratio in exposed malignant cells and perturbation induced in the KRAS pathway of malignant cells by electrostatic charges due to the phosphate molecule electrostatic charge as the trigger of the pathway.

Association of dietary total antioxidant capacity, alternative healthy eating index, and dietary inflammatory index with semen quality in men seeking infertility treatment.

Background: Since the association between dietary quality scores and semen quality remains unclear, we carried out a hospital-based cross-sectional study to investigate the association of Dietary Total Antioxidant Capacity (dTAC), Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII), and Alternative Healthy Eating Index (AHEI) scores with semen quality in men seeking infertility treatment.

Methods: This study enrolled 210 men with unexplained or idiopathic infertility. Semen samples were collected and analyzed according to the WHO 2010 criteria.

Astaxanthin supplementation impact on insulin resistance, lipid profile, blood pressure, and oxidative stress in polycystic ovary syndrome patients: A triple-blind randomized clinical trial.

Astaxanthin (ASX) is a natural carotenoid compound found in several of microorganisms and seafood. It may have numerous therapeutic benefits for polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of ASX on lipid profile, insulin resistance (IR), blood pressure (BP), and oxidative stress (OS) levels in infertile PCOS patients.

Radiofrequency Ablation and Intrauterine Transfusion in a Delayed Diagnosed Acardiac Twin Pregnancy.

Twin reversed arterial perfusion (TRAP) sequence or acardiac twin is a rare and severe complication of monochorionic multiple pregnancies. Acardiac twin accounts for 10% of all TRAP sequences, which is the most morphologically developed acardius. We present an undiagnosed TRAP sequence case up to 24 weeks of gestation who underwent successful amnioreduction, radiofrequency ablation (RFA), and intrauterine transfusion (IUT).

Cranial nerve involvement among COVID-19 survivors.

Introduction: COVID-19 was first reported in November 2019 in China and rapidly spread across the globe. COVID-19 causes neurologic symptoms and complications, which may persist even after recovery in patients. The objective of this research was to determine the involvement of cranial nerves in COVID-19 survivors.

The effect of normalizing vaginal microbiome using Lactovag in improving pregnancy outcomes in frozen embryo transfer cycles: a randomized clinical trial.

Introduction: Successful frozen-thawed embryo transfer (FTET) depends on multiple factors among which the woman's vaginal microbiota has recently been considered important. Using probiotic products, such as Lactovag in infertile women, the vaginal microbiome can become close to the healthy status.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Lactovag on normalizing vaginal microbiome, as well as its role in improving pregnancy outcomes in FTET cycles.

Pregnancy Outcome After Selective Fetal Reduction in Dichorionic Twin Pregnancies.

Objective: This study was conducted for determining pregnancy outcome after selective fetal reduction in twin pregnancies based on the gestational age at the time of the procedure in a referral academic center between 2017 and 2021.

Materials And Methods: This retrospective cohort study included all women with twin pregnancies who were diagnosed with a genetic or structural anomaly of one fetus or a desire to reduce the number of fetuses in order to reduce pregnancy complications visited in the period of 2017-2021. Reduction was performed due to an abdominal approach at 11 to 23 weeks of pregnancy.

Clinicoradiological Outcomes and Complication Profiles of Bilateral Dual Sacral-Alar-Iliac Screws versus Bilateral Single Sacral-Alar-Iliac Screws in Patients with Spinal Deformity Who Underwent Grade 3 or 4 Spinal Osteotomies: A Retrospective Comparative Study.

Objective: To compare short-term clinical and radiological outcomes and complication profiles between bilateral dual sacral-2-alar-iliac (S2AI) screw and bilateral single S2AI screw fixation techniques in patients who underwent grade 3 or 4 spinal osteotomies.

Methods: A retrospective review of 83 patients treated with bilateral dual S2AI screws and 32 patients treated with bilateral single S2AI screws was conducted between 2018 and 2020 with a minimum 1-year follow-up. Clinical and radiological outcomes of patients and incidence of perioperative complications, including rod breakage, screw dislodgment, proximal junctional kyphosis, proximal junctional failure, need for reoperation, and systemic adverse effects, were collected and statistically compared between the groups.

Effect of intra-ovarian platelet rich plasma in women with poor ovarian response.

Background: Poor ovarian responder (POR) women, whose ovarian response to gonadotropin stimulation has decreased, are at higher risk of unsuccessful in-vitro fertilization (IVF). Therefore, this study designed to evaluate the effect of intra-ovarian platelet rich plasma (PRP) on POR women.

Methods: This single-arm trial research was done on 20 POR women referred to the IVF Unit, university-based hospital, Tehran, Iran between October 2020 and September 2021.

Methods: This case-series study was performed on 37 histologically confirmed SEOC, diagnosed and treated in our tertiary hospital from March 2009 to September 2021.

Background: The National Institutes of Health (NIH) developed a new measurement system called the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) which can be used for multiple health conditions. The 29-item short form (PROMIS-29) with seven domains was more often used by clinical researchers to measure the physical function, mood and sleeping status of patients with low back pain (LBP). Translation of the PROMIS into multiple languages and adaptation of its application in different cultural diversities can help to further standardize clinical research studies and make them comparable to each other.

The Value of Ultrasound-guided Core Needle Biopsy in Differentiating Benign from Malignant Salivary Gland Lesions.

Purpose: In recent years, core needle biopsy (CNB) technique has received much attention, being used as alternative method of tissue sampling for surgical biopsy of salivary gland tumors (SGTs). The present study aimed to evaluate the value of CNB in differentiating benign from malignant SGTs.

A case-based reasoning system for neonatal survival and LOS prediction in neonatal intensive care units: a development and validation study.

Early prediction of neonates' survival and Length of Stay (LOS) in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) is effective in decision-making. We developed an intelligent system to predict neonatal survival and LOS using the "Case-Based Reasoning" (CBR) method. We developed a web-based CBR system based on K-Nearest Neighborhood (KNN) on 1682 neonates and 17 variables for mortality and 13 variables for LOS and evaluated the system with 336 retrospectively collected data.

Effect of intramuscular injection of human chorionic gonadotropin on endometrium preparation in frozen-thawed embryo transfer cycle: A randomized clinical trial.

Background: Assisted reproductive therapy (ART) has been developed remarkably in these decades; however, the rate of unsuccessful embryo implantation especially in the frozen-thawed embryo transfer (FET) cycles remains high and is reported up to 70%. The current study was designed to compare the effect of intramuscular injection of hCG on endometrium preparation and embryo implantation, in women undergoing FET compared to the control group.

Methods: This clinical trial was done on 140 infertile women that underwent FET.
