Background: As patients with acute kidney injury (AKI) progress to a higher stage, the risk for poor outcomes dramatically rises. Early identification of patients at high risk for AKI progression remains a major challenge. This study aimed to evaluate the value of furosemide responsiveness (FR) for predicting AKI progression in patients with initial mild and moderate AKI after cardiac surgery.

Cell migration occurs in confined microenvironments, which plays a vital role in the process of tumor metastasis. However, it is challenging to study their behaviors in vivo. Here we developed a cell squeeze system that can be scaled down to micrometers to mimic native physical confined microenvironments, wherein degrees of surface adhesion and mechanical constraints could be manipulated in order to investigate cell-migrating behaviors.

Background: Doxorubicin (DOX) is among the most widely employed antitumor agents, although its clinical applications have been largely hindered by severe cardiotoxicity. Earlier studies described an essential role of mitochondrial injury in the pathogenesis of DOX cardiomyopathy. PHB2 (Prohibitin 2) is perceived as an essential regulator for mitochondrial dynamics and oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) although its involvement in DOX cardiomyopathy remains elusive.

This study aimed to evaluate the pharmacokinetic (PK) similarity of the proposed biosimilar HS628 compared with the reference tocilizumab (Actemra®) and also to demonstrate similar safety and immunogenicity profiles in healthy Chinese male subjects. Eighty eligible subjects were randomized into two treatment groups in a 1:1 ratio to receive a single intravenous infusion of HS628 or tocilizumab at 4 mg/kg over 60 min. Blood samples were collected at the scheduled time points for PK and immunogenicity analysis.

Many hydrogel patches are developed to solve the pervasive and severe challenge of complex wound healing, while most of them still lack satisfactory controllability and comprehensive functionality. Herein, inspired by multiple creatures, including octopuses and snails, a novel muti-functional hydrogel patch is presented with controlled adhesion, antibacterial, drug release features, and multiple monitoring functions for intelligent wound healing management. The patch with micro suction-cup actuator array and a tensile backing layer is composed of tannin grafted gelatin, Ag-tannin nanoparticles, polyacrylamide (PAAm) and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAm).

Objective: The incidence of diabetic nephropathy (DN) is gradually increasing worldwide. Podocyte injury, such as podocyte apoptosis and loss of the slit diaphragm (SD)-specific markers are early pathogenic features of DN.
Materials And Methods: The cultured mouse podocytes were separated into a high glucose-treated (HG, 30mM) group to mimic DN , a low glucose-treated (LG, 5mM) group as a control and HG+ angiotensin-(1-7)(Ang-(1-7)) and HG+Ang-(1-7) + D-Ala7-Ang-(1-7) (A779, Ang-(1-7)/Mas receptor antagonist) experimental groups.

Oxidized methylcytidines 5-hydroxymethyl-2'deoxycytidine (5hmdC) and 5-formy-2'deoxycytidine (5fdC) are deaminated by cytidine deaminase (CDA) into genome-toxic variants of uridine, triggering DNA damage and cell death. These compounds are promising chemotherapeutic agents for cancer cells that are resistant to pyrimidine derivative drugs, such as decitabine and cytarabine, which are inactivated by CDA. In our study, we found that cancer cells infected with mycoplasma exhibited a markedly increased sensitivity to 5hmdC and 5fdC, which was independent of CDA expression of cancer cells.

Prevention of recurrence/metastasis and tissue regeneration are critical for post-surgery treatment of malignant tumors. Here, to address these needs, a novel type of microgel co-loading cryo-shocked cancer cells, immunoadjuvant, and immune checkpoint inhibitor is presented by microfluidic electrospray technology and liquid nitrogen treatment. Owing to the encapsulation of cryo-shocked cancer cells and immunoadjuvant, the microgels can recruit dendritic cells and activate them , and evoke a robust immune response.

Nociceptive signals are usually transmitted to layer 4 neurons in somatosensory cortex via the spinothalamic-thalamocortical pathway. The layer 5 corticospinal neurons in sensorimotor cortex are reported to receive the output of neurons in superficial layers; and their descending axons innervate the spinal cord to regulate basic sensorimotor functions. Here, we show that a subset of layer 5 neurons receives spinal inputs through a direct spino-cortical circuit bypassing the thalamus, and thus define these neurons as spino-cortical recipient neurons (SCRNs).

Angiogenesis is a characteristic of tumor development and is key for tumor growth and metastasis. LINC00460 is a long non-coding RNA that plays important yet complex roles in cancer development and progression. Here, we explored the functional mechanism of action of LINC00460 in cervical cancer (CC) angiogenesis for the first time.

Background: Improved adenoma detection at colonoscopy has decreased the risk of developing colorectal cancer. However, whether image-enhanced endoscopy (IEE) further improves the adenoma detection rate (ADR) is controversial.
Aim: To compare IEE with white-light imaging (WLI) endoscopy for the detection and identification of colorectal adenoma.

Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) has allowed profiling cell types of the dorsal root ganglia (DRG) and their transcriptional states in physiology and chronic pain. However, the evaluation criteria used in previous studies to classify DRG neurons varied, which presents difficulties in determining the various types of DRG neurons. In this review, we aim to integrate findings from previous transcriptomic studies of the DRG.

Liquid crystal is a state of matter being intermediate between solid and liquid. Liquid crystal materials exhibit both orientational order and fluidity. While liquid crystals have long been highly recognized in the display industry, in recent decades, liquid crystals provide new opportunities into the cross-field of material science and biomedicine due to their biocompatibility, multifunctionality, and responsiveness.

Background: Hyperhomocysteinemia has been linked with chronic kidney disease (CKD). The present study investigated whether homocysteine (Hcy) serum levels might serve as a marker for the advancement of diabetic nephropathy (DN).
Methods: Clinical and laboratory indicators including Hcy, vitamin D (VD), urine protein, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and the urinary protein/creatinine ratio in subjects > 65 years with DN (n = 1,845), prediabetes (n = 1,180) and in a non-diabetes (control) group (n = 28,720) were analyzed.

Background: White cord syndrome is an uncommon complication characterized by delayed neurologic deterioration with no other identified cause after spinal decompression surgery. Its etiology is attributed to spinal cord reperfusion injury. Here, we present the first case of an extended version of white cord syndrome, with concomitant involvement of the medulla oblongata and cervical cord reperfusion injury after intracranial vertebral artery angioplasty and stenting.

Background: Patients receiving surgical treatment of acute type A Aortic Dissection (aTAAD) are common to suffer organ dysfunction in the intensive care unit due to overwhelming inflammation. Previous studies have revealed that glucocorticoids may reduce complications in certain patient groups, but evidence between postoperative glucocorticoids administration and improvement in organ dysfunction after aTAAD surgery are lacking.
Methods: This study will be an investigator-initiated, prospective, single-blind, randomized, single-center study.
