Hydrogel hemostatic sponges have been recognized for its effectiveness in wound treatment due to its excellent biocompatibility, degradability, as well as multi-facet functionalities. Current research focuses on optimizing the composition and structure of the sponge to enhance its therapeutic effectiveness. Here, we propose an adhesive hydrogel made from purely natural substances extracted from okra and Panax notoginseng.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a heterogeneous inflammatory and neurodegenerative disease with an unpredictable course towards progressive disability. Treating progressive MS is challenging due to limited insights into the underlying mechanisms. We examined the molecular changes associated with primary progressive MS (PPMS) using a cross-tissue (blood and post-mortem brain) and multilayered data (genetic, epigenetic, transcriptomic) from independent cohorts.

Imbalanced Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) levels may lead to liver diseases through abnormal regulation of autophagy, but the roles of SIRT1-regulated autophagy in hepatocellular carcinoma are still controversial. In this study, we found that SIRT1 mRNA and protein levels were upregulated in hepatocellular carcinoma, and high SIRT1 expression hinted an advanced stage and a poor prognosis. The differentially expressed proteins were significantly elevated in autophagy, cellular response to stress, and immune signaling pathways.

This study aimed to assess the safety, pharmacokinetics, and food impact on sudapyridine (WX-081), a novel drug designed to inhibit mycobacterium ATP synthase, with clinical applications for drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB) treatment. The research comprised two arms: a single ascending dose (SAD) arm (30 to 600 mg, N = 52) and a multiple ascending dose (MAD) arm (200 to 400 mg, N = 30). The influence of food was evaluated using a 400 mg dose within an SAD cohort.

Understansding complex biological systems requires the simultaneous characterization of a large number of interacting components in their native 3D environment with high spatial resolution. Highly-multiplexed Raman imaging is an emerging general strategy for detecting biomarkers with scalable multiplexity and ultra-sensitivity based on a series of stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) techniques. Here we review recent advances in highly-multiplexed Raman imaging and how they contribute to the technological revolution in 3D spatial biology, focusing on the developmental pathway from spectroscopy study to biotechnology invention.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a prevalent degenerative disease that afflicts more than 250 million people worldwide, impairing their mobility and quality of life. However, conventional drug therapy is palliative. Exosomes (Exo), although with the potential to fundamentally repair cartilage, face challenges in their efficient enrichment and delivery.

German pathologist Otto Aichel suggested, a century ago, that the cancer cell acquired its metastatic property from a leukocyte via cell-cell fusion. Since then, several revised versions of this theory have been proposed. Most of the proposals attribute the generation of the metastatic cancer cell to the fusion between a primary cancer cell and a macrophage.

Organoids refer to 3D cultures established to recapitulate histology, pathology, architecture, and genetic traits of various organs and tissues in the body, thereby replacing 2D cell cultures, xenograft, and animal models. Organoids form a 3D in vitro mimic of original tissues like the liver and are derived from embryonic or adult tissue stem cells. Liver and bile duct tumor organoids, also called, tumoroids capture genetic diversity, cellular, and pathophysiological properties of original tumors.

Superlong MOF-74-type micro/nanofibers, which have aspect ratios much higher than 200, are synthesized via nanoparticulate MOF-mediated recrystallization. Co-MOF-74 microfibers have high crystallinity, whereas Co-MOF-74-II nanofibers are composed of nanocrystals and amorphous phases, even though they have nanofibrous morphology. Both MOFs consist of plenty of micropores with diameters in the range of 1.

Directional transport of liquids is of great importance in energy saving, chemical/biomedical engineering, and microfluidics applications. Despite considerable progress in engineering different open surfaces to achieve liquid manipulation, the realization of diode-like liquid transport in enclosed spaces is still challenging. Here, a flexible diode microtube is presented for directional liquid transport within confined spaces using pulsed microfluidics.

Chronic diabetic wounds confront a significant medical challenge because of increasing prevalence and difficult-healing circumstances. It is vital to develop multifunctional hydrogel dressings, with well-designed morphology and structure to enhance flexibility and effectiveness in wound management. To achieve these, we propose a self-healing hydrogel dressing based on structural color microspheres for wound management.

Background: This study sought to elucidate the associations of cardiometabolic index (CMI), as a metabolism-related index, with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality among the older population. Utilizing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), we further explored the potential mediating effect of inflammation within these associations.
Methods: A cohort of 3029 participants aged over 65 years old, spanning six NHANES cycles from 2005 to 2016, was enrolled and assessed.

Water regulates or even governs a wide range of biological processes. Despite its fundamental importance, surprisingly little is known about the structure of intracellular water. Herein we employ a Raman micro-spectroscopy technique to uncover the composition, abundance and vibrational spectra of intracellular water in individual living cells.

Background: Inherited variations in DNA double-strand break (DSB) repair pathway are known to influence ovarian cancer occurrence, progression and treatment response. Despite its significance, survival-associated genetic variants within the DSB pathway remain underexplored.
Methods: In the present study, we performed a two-phase analysis of 19,290 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 199 genes in the DSB repair pathway from a genome-wide association study (GWAS) dataset and explored their associations with overall survival (OS) in 1039 Han Chinese epithelial ovarian carcinoma (EOC) patients.

Fiber electronics with flexible and weavable features can be easily integrated into textiles for wearable applications. However, due to small sizes and curved surfaces of fiber materials, it remains challenging to load robust active layers, thus hindering production of high-sensitivity fiber strain sensors. Herein, functional sensing materials are firmly anchored on the fiber surface through a hydrolytic condensation process.

Endothelial cells (ECs) migration is a crucial early step in vascular repair and tissue neovascularization. While extensive research has elucidated the biochemical drivers of endothelial motility, the impact of biophysical cues, including vessel geometry and topography, remains unclear. Herein, we present a novel approach to reconstruct 3D self-assembly blood vessels-on-a-chip that accurately replicates real vessel geometry and topography, surpassing conventional 2D flat tube formation models.

Metabolic/bariatric surgery as a treatment for obesity and related diseases, such as type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), has been increasingly recognised in recent years. However, compared with conventional pharmacologic therapy, the long-term effect (≥ 5 years) of metabolic surgery in T2DM patients is still unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the diabetes remission rate, incidence of diabetic microvascular complications, incidence of macrovascular complications, and mortality in T2DM patients who received metabolic surgery versus pharmacologic therapy more than 5 years after the surgery.

Ferroptosis, an iron-dependent regulated cell death mechanism, holds significant promise as a therapeutic strategy in oncology. In the current study, we explored the regulatory effects of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a prominent polyphenol in green tea, on ferroptosis and its potential therapeutic implications for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Treatment of NSCLC cell lines with varying concentrations of EGCG resulted in a notable suppression of cell proliferation, as evidenced by a reduction in Ki67 immunofluorescence staining.
