White Matter Magnetic Resonance Diffusion Measures in Multiple Sclerosis with Overactive Bladder.

Background: Lower urinary tract (LUT) symptoms are reported in more than 80% of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), most commonly an overactive bladder (OAB). The relationship between brain white matter (WM) changes in MS and OAB symptoms is poorly understood.

Objectives: We aim to evaluate (i) microstructural WM differences across MS patients (pwMS) with OAB symptoms, patients without LUT symptoms, and healthy subjects using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), and (ii) associations between clinical OAB symptom scores and DTI indices.

Neurogenesis, play a vital role in neuronal plasticity of adult mammalian brains, and its dysregulation is present in the pathophysiology of Parkinson's disease (PD). While subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) at various frequencies has been proven effective in alleviating PD symptoms, its influence on neurogenesis remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effects of 1-week electrical stimulation at frequencies of 60Hz, 130Hz, and 180Hz on neurogenesis in the subventricular zone (SVZ) of PD rats.

Correlations of religious beliefs with anxiety and depression of Chinese adolescents.

Objective: This study was designed to investigate the prevalence of religious belief and its relationship with psychiatric symptoms among Chinese adolescents.

Methods: This study recruited 11,603 adolescents in Grades 7-9 from March 21 to 31, 2020 in five cities in China. The religious beliefs of adolescents were collected by asking whether they held religious beliefs and what type of religious beliefs they held.

High frequency (HF)-rTMS has been shown to improve cognitive functions in patients with schizophrenia (SCZ). This study aimed to investigate whether COX-2 rs5275 variants were associated with cognitive improvements following rTMS treatment in patients with SCZ. Forty-eight hospitalized patients with SCZ were assigned to the neuronavigation HF-rTMS group and 28 patients to the sham group over left DLPFC for 1 month.

Frailty Status and Related Factors in Elderly Patients in Intensive Care for Acute Conditions in China.

Frailty is a complex age-related clinical disorder characterized by the decreased physiological capacity of multiple organ systems, leading to increased susceptibility to stressors. Because the clinical manifestations of frailty are heterogeneous, accurately diagnosing the degree of frailty and its predisposing factors is important. We investigated the prevalence of frailty and the related risk factors in elderly patients in emergency departments (EDs) in China using a clinical frailty scale (CFS) and a comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) tool.

Microsurgery for vestibular schwannoma: analysis of short-term clinical outcome.

Background: Total removal of the vestibular schwannoma when preserving the function of the facial nerve is difficult. The objective of the current study was to investigate the short-term clinical outcome of vestibular schwannoma removal via retro-sigmoid approach.

Methods: One-hundred consecutive patients diagnosed with vestibular schwannoma were surgically treated between December 2018 and August 2019 in Xuanwu Hospital, Capital Medical University.

Association between thyroid function and comorbid anxiety in first-episode and drug naïve patients with major depressive disorder.

Objective: Existing studies have shown that thyroid dysfunction is associated with depression. However, its role in major depressive disorder (MDD) with comorbid anxiety remains unclear. The main purpose of this study was to compare thyroid function in a large sample of first episode drug naïve (FEDN) MDD patients with and without anxiety.

Mental health status of adolescents after family confinement during the COVID-19 outbreak in the general population: a longitudinal survey.

Few studies have examined the psychological impact on adolescents of family confinement and infection exposure during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, these surveys lacked follow-up data to determine how the family confinement affects participants' depression and anxiety. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the psychological status and related risk and protective factors of adolescents after two months of family confinement for preventing COVID-19 in China, and compare them with baseline data.

Background: The Coronavirus Disease-19 (COVID-19) pandemic negatively impacts mental health. Some published studies have investigated the prevalence of depression among children and adolescents in China during the pandemic. However, the results vary widely.

MicroRNA expression signature and target prediction in familial and sporadic primary macronodular adrenal hyperplasia (PMAH).

Background: Primary macronodular adrenal hyperplasia (PMAH), previously termed ACTH-independent macronodular adrenal hyperplasia (AIMAH), is a rare cause of Cushing's syndrome usually characterized by functioning adrenal macronodules and increased cortisol production.

Methods: To screen and analyse the microRNA (miRNA) profile of PMAH in order to elucidate its possible pathogenesis, a miRNA microarray was used to test tissue samples from patients with familial PMAH, patients with sporadic PMAH and normal control samples of other nontumour adrenocortical tissues and identify characteristic microRNA expression signatures. Randomly selected miRNAs were validated by quantitative real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR).

APACHE IV system helps to determine role of cholecystostomy in elderly patients with acute cholecystitis.

Objective: Cholecystostomy is a palliative treatment for patients unfit to undergo immediate cholecystectomy. Nevertheless, the role of cholecystostomy in the clinical management of such patients remains unclear. The Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation IV (APACHE IV) scoring system is useful for estimating the hospital mortality of high-risk patients.

Gender differences in prevalence and clinical correlates of anxiety symptoms in first-episode and drug-naïve patients with major depressive disorder.

A growing number of studies have shown that brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is associated with weight gain during antipsychotic treatment in schizophrenia patients. However, there is still a lack of research results in the initial stage of antipsychotic treatment. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between weight gain caused by risperidone monotherapy for 12 weeks and BDNF level in antipsychotic-naive and first-episode (ANFE) patients with schizophrenia, and we hypothesize that this may depend on BDNF Val66Met gene polymorphism.

However, most existing classification methods cannot take full advantage of these measures. In this study, we improve traditional multitask learning framework by fully considering the relevance among related tasks and supplementary information from other unrelated tasks at the same time.

Purpose: The host's immune response to malignant tumor is fundamental to tumorigenesis and tumor development. The immune score is currently used to assess prognosis and to guide immunotherapy; however, its association with lung cancer prognosis is not clear.

Methods: Clinical features and immune score data of lung cancer patients from The Cancer Genome Atlas were obtained to build a clinical prognosis nomogram.

Background: The impact of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) on public mental health in 2019 is verified, but the role of only-child status in the mental health of adolescents confined at home during the COVID-19 epidemic has not been investigated and is not clear.

Objective: Our study aims to assess the impact of only-child status on the mental health of adolescents confined at home during the COVID-19 outbreak. The exposure risk to COVID-19, adverse experience, parent-child relationship, and resilience have also been measured and considered.

Electrical stimulation of the lateral cerebellar nucleus promotes neurogenesis in rats after motor cortical ischemia.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has been tentatively explored to promote motor recovery after stroke. Stroke could transiently activate endogenous self-repair processes, including neurogenesis in the subventricular zone (SVZ). In this regard, it is of considerable clinical interest to study whether DBS of the lateral cerebellar nucleus (LCN) could promote neurogenesis in the SVZ for functional recovery after stroke.

Awareness, utilization and influencing factors of social supports for main informal caregivers of schizophrenia patients: a cross-sectional study in primary care settings in Beijing, China.

Background: Most schizophrenia patients are supported by main informal caregivers at home in China. This study aims to investigate the further needs of social supports for main informal caregivers of schizophrenia patients and to analyze influencing factors on the awareness and utilization of social supports in Beijing. The results of this study could potentially act as reference for health professionals to implement appropriate and effective support programs.
