This study aimed to investigate the efficacy, safety, and prognostic factors of drug-eluting beads transarterial chemoembolization (DEB-TACE) in treating Chinese patients with liver cancer. A total of 367 liver cancer patients from 24 medical centers were consecutively enrolled in this multiple-center, prospective cohort study, including 275 hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cases, 37 intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) cases, and 55 secondary liver cancer cases. All the patients received CalliSpheres DEB-TACE treatment.

Persistence of human immunodeficiency virus 1 (HIV-1) latency and residual immune activation remain major barriers to treatment in patients receiving highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). In the present study, we investigated the molecular mechanisms of persistent HIV infection and residual immune activation in HAART-treated patients. We showed that the expression level of B-cell CLL/lymphoma 11B (BCL11B) was significantly increased in CD4T cells from HIV-infected patients undergoing HAART, and this was accompanied by increased expression of BCL11B-associated chromatin modifiers and inflammatory factors in comparison to healthy controls and untreated patients with HIV.

This is the first phase 2/3 study conducted in Mainland China confirming the efficacy and safety of RDV + ritonavir-boosted danoprevir + ribavirin for 12 weeks in treatment-naïve noncirrhotic patients with genotype 1 infection in a large population. In this multicenter, randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled phase 2/3 trial (NCT03362814), we enrolled 424 treatment-naïve, noncirrhotic adult HCV genotype 1 patients.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy and safety of drug-eluting beads transarterial chemoembolization (DEB-TACE) treatment in Chinese hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients and the prognostic factors for treatment response as well as survival. A total of 275 HCC patients were included in this prospective study. Treatment response was assessed by modified Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (mRECIST), and progression-free survival (PFS) as well as overall survival (OS) were determined.

The streptozotocin (STZ) induced Sprague-Dawley rats were treated with leflunomide (15 mg/kg/d), benazepril (15 mg/kg/d) or both the two drugs. Fasting blood glucose (FBG) and renal function indexes including blood urea nitrogen (BUN), serum creatinine (Scr), and proteinuria and kidney/body weight ratio (KW/BW) were measured.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transcription is closely associated with chromatin remodeling. Retinoblastoma binding protein 4 (RBBP4) is a histone chaperone implicated in chromatin remodeling. However, the role of RBBP4 in HIV-1 infection and the underlying mechanism remain elusive.

Background: Mitochondrial dysfunction is an important mechanism of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Developing mitochondrial regulators/nutrients from natural products to remedy mitochondrial dysfunction represent attractive strategies for NAFLD therapy. In China, Polygonatum kingianum (PK) has been used as a herb and food nutrient for centuries.

Selenium is an essential trace element for maintenance of overall health, whose deficiency and dyshomeostasis have been linked to a variety of diseases and disorders. The majority of previous researches focused on characterization of genes encoding selenoproteins or proteins involved in selenium metabolism as well as their functions. Many studies in humans also investigated the relationship between selenium and complex diseases, but their results have been inconsistent.

Background: Previous studies have investigated the vitamin D status in patients with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and its relationship with HBV replication, the results however were inconsistent. The present meta-analysis was carried out to compare the vitamin D levels between patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) and healthy controls, and to determine whether vitamin D levels were correlated with HBV viral loads significantly.
Methods: A systematic search was conducted via PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE and the Cochrane Library to identify eligible studies until September 28, 2017.

Astrocytes become reactive in response to spinal cord injury (SCI) and ultimately form a histologically apparent glial scar at the lesion site. It is controversial whether astrocytic scar is detrimental or beneficial to the axonal regeneration and SCI repair. Therefore, much effort has focused on understanding the functions of reactive astrocytes.

Deregulation of the expression of amyloid precursor protein (APP) can lead to the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Recent studies have shown that many single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the 3' untranslated region (UTR) of APP are associated with the development of AD. Since microRNAs (miRNAs) are involved in the regulation of APP expression, we believe that the APP 3'UTR polymorphism may affect the regulation of APP expression in miRNAs.

The adult CNS has poor ability to replace degenerated neurons following injury or disease. Recently, direct reprogramming of astrocytes into induced neurons has been proposed as an innovative strategy toward CNS repair. As a cell population that shows high diversity on physiological properties and functions depending on their spatiotemporal distribution, however, whether the astrocyte heterogeneity affect neuronal reprogramming is not clear.

BACKGROUND Hypertension is a leading global disease, and myocardial fibrosis is an important adverse effect of hypertension, seriously threatening human health. The IL-6/STAT3 pathway and endothelin-1 (ET-1) were previously suggested to play a part in myocardial fibrosis. MATERIAL AND METHODS To investigate the role of Atorvastatin (Ato) in spontaneous hypertension, systolic blood pressure (SBP) and left ventricular mass index (LVMI) were measured, and Masson trichrome staining was performed.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the most common diseases worldwide that has been continuously increasing recently. NAFLD embraces a spectrum of liver histological alterations, ranging from simple steatosis (NAFL) to severe non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), that is characterized by fat accumulation, lobular inflammation, and ballooning degeneration in the hepatocytes in the absence of alcohol abuse. The innate immune system has an important role in NASH pathogenesis.

Background: Neural stem cells (NSCs) have unique biological characteristics such as continuous proliferation and multipotential differentiation, providing a possible method for restoration of central nervous system (CNS) function after injury or disease. NSCs and astrocytes share many similar biological properties including cell morphology and molecular expression and can trans-differentiate into each other under certain conditions. However, characteristic genes specifically expressed by NSCs have not been well described.

Ischemia/Reperfusion injury contributes to acute kidney injury (AKI) and subsequent chronic kidney disease (CKD) including renal fibrosis. Autophagy is a cytoplasmic components degradation pathway that has complex function in the development of various diseases such as fibrosis in kidney. Our previous work demonstrated that postconditioning (POC) showed excellent therapeutic effect on renal fibrosis via inhibiting the overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) after reperfusion.
