Background: Thoracoscopic segmentectomy is the main surgical method for the treatment of earlylung cancer. With the promotion of technology and increasingly accurate criteria for lung subsegments, lung nodules with complex positions involving intersegmental and multisegments have become technical bottlenecks. This study aimed to verify whether seeking anatomical conditions for creating a fissure by tunneling techniques with precise resection of lung segments could solve this bottleneck problem.

Macrophages are professional phagocytic immune cells that, following activation, polarize on a spectrum between the proinflammatory M1 and the proresolution M2 states. Macrophages have further been demonstrated to retain plasticity, allowing for the reprogramming of their polarization states following exposure to new stimuli. Particulate matter (PM) has been repeatedly shown to modify macrophage function and polarization while also inducing worsening respiratory infection morbidity and mortality.

O-GlcNAc transferase promotes vascular smooth muscle calcification through modulating Wnt/β-catenin signaling.

FASEB J

December 2024

Xinxiang Key Laboratory of Metabolism and Integrative Physiology, School of Forensic Medicine, Xinxiang Medical University, Xinxiang, Henan, China.

Vascular calcification (VC), associated with high cardiovascular mortality in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), involves osteogenic transdifferentiation of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs). O-GlcNAcylation, a dynamic post-translational modification, is closely linked to cardiovascular diseases, including VC. However, the exact role and molecular mechanism of O-GlcNAc signaling in abnormal mineral metabolism-induced VC remain unclear.

Oxidative stress has been implicated as a causative factor for the development and progression of osteoporosis(OP). Ellagic acid (EA), a natural polyphenol, presents anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory properties. However, EA's role and molecular mechanism in osteoblasts have not yet been elucidated.

Nanocomposite films made from graphene oxide (GO) and MXene have a dense layered structure due to nanosheet self-stacking, limiting their dye adsorption performance. In this study, acid-base neutralization reactions are used to induce MXene/reduced graphene oxide (RGO) films bulging, which opens the stacked layer structure within the membrane and enhances MB adsorption performance. The effects of the pH, temperature, contact time, and initial concentration of MB on the adsorption performance are further investigated.

Primary resection surgery is a conventional approach in breast cancer treatment, which plays a pivotal role in the prevention of recurrence and metastasis. In this study, an injectable hydrogel comprising chitosan (CS), β-glycerophosphate (β-GP), and dopamine (DA) with near-infrared (NIR) photothermal attributes was developed. The composite hydrogels integrate doxorubicin (DOX), termed DCGD, and can be used for chemotherapy, synergistic photothermal therapy, anti-bacterial and hemostasis.

Disentangling the topological symptom structure of schizophrenia: A network analysis.

Schizophr Res

December 2024

Department of Psychiatry, the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University, Zhengzhou, China; Henan International Joint Laboratory of Biological Psychiatry, Zhengzhou University, Zhengzhou, China; Henan Psychiatric Transformation Research Key Laboratory, Zhengzhou University, Zhengzhou, China. Electronic address:

Background And Hypothesis: The Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), comprehensively assesses schizophrenia severity. While network analyses of schizophrenic symptoms have yielded inconsistent results, components of disorganized thought consistently rank high in centrality. The present study aims to explore the centrality of disorganized thought across patient subgroups and its potential as a treatment target.

Background: To investigate the efficacy of three-compartment restriction spectrum imaging (RSI), diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI), and diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) in the assessment of lymph node metastases (LNM) in rectal cancer.

Methods: A total of 77 patients with rectal cancer who underwent pelvic MRI were enrolled. RSI-derived parameters (f, f, and f), DKI-derived parameters (D and K), and the DWI-derived parameter (ADC) were calculated and compared using a Mann-Whitney U test or independent samples t-test.

Background: Environmental factors have been identified as primary risk factors for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, studies on the association between environmental factors and T2DM have mainly focused on morbidity and mortality, which do not fully reflect the disease burden stemming from air pollution. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the correlation between air pollution and T2DM, including hospital length of stay (LOS) and costs.

Objective: To construct a nomogram model based on clinical risk factors and CT radiohistological features to predict the prognosis of hypertensive intracerebral hemorrhage (HICH).

Methods: A total of 148 patients with HICH from April 2022 to July 2024 were retrospectively selected as the research subjects. According to the modified Rankin scale at the time of discharge, they were divided into good group (Rankin scale score 0-2) and bad group (Rankin scale score 3-6).

Whole slide image based prognosis prediction in rectal cancer using unsupervised artificial intelligence.

BMC Cancer

December 2024

Department of Radiology, The Sixth Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University, No. 26, Yuancunerheng Road, Guangzhou, Guangdong, 510655, China.

Background: Rectal cancer is a common cancer worldwide and lacks effective prognostic markers. The development of prognostic markers by computational pathology methods has attracted increasing attention. This paper aims to construct a prognostic signature from whole slide images for predicting progression-free survival (PFS) of rectal cancer through an unsupervised artificial intelligence algorithm.

Background: Serine/glycine are critical for the growth and survival of cancer cells. Some cancer cells are more dependent on exogenous serine/glycine than endogenously synthesized serine/glycine. However, the function and underlying mechanisms of exogenous serine/glycine in renal cell carcinoma (RCC) remain unclear.

Neurodynamic models that simulate how micro-level alterations propagate upward to impact macroscopic neural circuits and overall brain function may offer valuable insights into the pathological mechanisms of schizophrenia (SCZ). In this study, we integrated a neurodynamic model with the classical Contrastive Variational Autoencoder (CVAE) to extract and evaluate macro-scale SCZ-specific features, including subject-level, region-level parameters, and time-varying states. Firstly, we demonstrated the robust fitting of the model within our multi-site dataset.

The infantile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis, also called CLN1 disease, is a fatal neurodegenerative disease caused by mutations in the CLN1 gene encoding palmitoyl protein thioesterase 1 (PPT1). Identifying the depalmitoylation substrates of PPT1 is crucial for understanding CLN1 disease. In this study, we found that GABAR, the critical synaptic protein essential for inhibitory neurotransmission, is a substrate of PPT1.

Faculty of Forensic Medicine, Zhongshan School of Medicine, Sun Yat-Sen University, Guangzhou, Guangdong, China.

With the gradual emergence of xylazine as a street drug, incidents of xylazine poisoning are now occurring worldwide. However, it remains unknown whether long-term exposure to xylazine causes nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). In the present study, the rats were injected with xylazine intraperitoneally for 28 consecutive days, and then serum and liver tissues were collected for analysis.
