Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), now recognized as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), represents a significant and escalating global health challenge. Its prevalence is intricately linked to obesity, insulin resistance, and other components of the metabolic syndrome. As our comprehension of MASLD deepens, it has become evident that this condition extends beyond the liver, embodying a complex, multi-systemic disease with hepatic manifestations that mirror the broader metabolic landscape.

The objective was to determine the research status and hotspots of seasonal affective disorders (SAD) based on bibliometric tools, which will contribute to the further research in this field. We used bibliometric tools CiteSpace and VOSviewer to conduct visual quantitative analysis on 465 SAD literatures in the Web of Science core database from 2008 to 2023 from multiple perspectives such as collaboration network, keywords, and literature citations. At the same time, we used Microsoft Word to make relevant tables.

Immunometabolism is critical in the regulation of immunity and inflammation; however, the mechanism of preventing aberrant activation-induced immunopathology remains largely unclear. Here, we report that glyoxalase II (GLO2) in the glycolysis branching pathway is specifically downregulated by NF-κB signaling during innate immune activation via tristetraprolin (TTP)-mediated mRNA decay. As a result, its substrate S-D-lactoylglutathione (SLG) accumulates in the cytosol and directly induces D-lactyllysine modification of proteins.

Purpose: Bone cement-reinforced fenestrated pedicle screws (FPSs) have been widely used in the internal fixation and repair of the spine with osteoporosis in recent years and show significant improvement in fixation strength and stability. However, compared with conventional reinforcement methods, the advantages of bone cement-reinforced FPSs remain undetermined. This article compares the effects of fenestrated and conventional pedicle screws (CPSs) combined with bone cement in the treatment of osteoporosis.

Article Synopsis
  • Cassia mimosoides L. (CML) is a traditional Chinese medicine used for obesity treatment, but its effects on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) were unclear, prompting this study to explore its impacts.
  • The study involved high-fat diet-induced NAFLD mice and found that CML reduced body weight, triglycerides, cholesterol, and inflammation markers, suggesting it has beneficial effects on liver health.
  • Results showed that CML mainly works by inhibiting the pregnane X receptor (PXR) signaling pathway, providing evidence for its use in clinical practice against NAFLD.

Background: Epimedium total flavonoids (EF) have been recommended to be one of the effective components in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for the treatment of primary osteoporosis (POP) in China. Due to the lack of evidence-based medical evidence on the efficacy and safety of EF for the treatment of POP, the current systematic review and meta-analysis was carried out aimed at evaluating the curative effects and safety profile of EF treatment for POP in order to provide decision making references for clinical research.

Methods: The PubMed, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, Web of Science, CNKI, Wanfang, and VIP databases were searched from the date of inception to 11 August 2024.

  • Life's Essentials 8 (LE8) is a new indicator by the American Heart Association that evaluates cardiovascular health through various health metrics and may also relate to other diseases, but its connection to psoriasis had not been previously studied.
  • The study analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) to assess the association between LE8 and psoriasis prevalence among American adults, using a multivariate logistic regression model.
  • Results showed that a higher LE8 score was linked to a lower risk of psoriasis, with those in the high LE8 group having a 61% reduced risk compared to those in the low LE8 group.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection can cause condyloma acuminatum (CA), which is characterized by a high incidence and a propensity for recurrence after treatment. Angiogenesis plays an important role in the occurrence and development of CA. Seryl-tRNA synthetase (SerRS) is a newly identified, potent anti-angiogenic factor that directly binds to the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGFA) promoter, thereby suppressing its transcription.

Ferroptosis-inducing nanomedicine and targeted short peptide for synergistic treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma.

J Nanobiotechnology

September 2024

Department of Clinical Research Center, Affiliated Hangzhou First People's Hospital, School of Medicine, Westlake University, Hangzhou, Zhejiang, 310006, P. R. China.

The poor prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is still an urgent challenge to be solved worldwide. Hence, assembling drugs and targeted short peptides together to construct a novel medicine delivery strategy is crucial for targeted and synergy therapy of HCC. Herein, a high-efficiency nanomedicine delivery strategy has been constructed by combining graphdiyne oxide (GDYO) as a drug-loaded platform, specific peptide (SP94-PEG) as a spear to target HCC cells, sorafenib, doxorubicin-Fe (DOX-Fe), and siRNA (SLC7A11-i) as weapons to exert a three-path synergistic attack against HCC cells.

Oleandrin enhances radiotherapy sensitivity in lung cancer by inhibiting the ATM/ATR-mediated DNA damage response.

Phytother Res

August 2024

Translational Medicine Research Center, Key Laboratory of Clinical Cancer Pharmacology and Toxicology Research of Zhejiang Province, Hangzhou First People's Hospital, Hangzhou, China.

Despite active clinical trials on the use of Oleandrin alone or in combination with other drugs for the treatment of solid tumors, the potential synergistic effect of Oleandrin with radiotherapy remains unknown. This study reveals a new mechanism by which Oleandrin targets ATM and ATR kinase-mediated radiosensitization in lung cancer. Various assays, including clonogenic, Comet, immunofluorescence staining, apoptosis and Cell cycle assays, were conducted to evaluate the impact of oleandrin on radiation-induced double-strand break repair and cell cycle distribution.

Background: 5-Fluorouracil (5-Fu), a prominent chemotherapeutic agent for colorectal cancer (CRC) treatment, is often associated with gastrointestinal toxicities, particularly diarrhea. Our previous study demonstrated that berberine (BBR) ameliorates 5-Fu-induced intestinal mucosal injury by modulating the gut microbiota in rats. Nevertheless, the precise molecular mechanism underlying BBR's protective effect on intestinal mucosa remains elusive, and its impact on the anti-tumor efficacy of 5-Fu warrants further investigation.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of the National Centralized Drug Procurement (NCDP) policy on chemical pharmaceutical enterprises' R&D investment and provide references for improving NCDP policy design and encouraging innovation in the pharmaceutical industry.

Methods: Using the panel data of 102 Shanghai and Shenzhen A-share listed enterprises from 2016 to 2022 under the chemical pharmaceutical classification of Shenwan in Wind database as the research sample, this study developed difference-in-differences (DID) models on bid-winning and bid-non-winning enterprises, respectively, to evaluate the impact of NCDP policy on their R&D investment. In addition, this study tested the heterogeneity of bid-winning enterprises based on the bid success rate, the decline of drug price, and enterprise size.

Background: Neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) are prevalent in cognitively impaired individuals including Alzheimer's disease (AD) dementia and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Whereas several studies have reported the associations between NPS with AD pathologic biomarkers and cerebral small vessel disease (SVD), but it remains unknown whether AD pathology and SVD contribute to different sub-syndromes independently or aggravate same symptoms synergistically.

Method: We included 445 cognitively impaired individuals (including 316 MCI and 129 AD) with neuropsychiatric, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers (Aβ42, p-tau, and t-tau) and multi-model MRI data.
