Background: Many children aged younger than 5 years living in low- and middle-income countries are at risk for poor development. Early child development (ECD) programs are cost-effective strategies to reduce poverty, crime, school dropouts, and socioeconomic inequality. With the spread of low-cost mobile phones and internet access in low- and middle-income countries, new service delivery models such as mobile phone-aided interventions have a great potential to improve early childhood development.

Three-Dimensional-Printed Poly-L-Lactic Acid Scaffolds with Different Pore Sizes Influence Periosteal Distraction Osteogenesis of a Rabbit Skull.

Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, No. 639, Zhizaoju Road, Shanghai 200011, China.

The repair of bone defects is a big challenge in reconstructive surgery. Periosteal distraction osteogenesis (PDO), as a promising technique used for bone regeneration, forms a space between the periosteum and bone cortex to regenerate the new bone merely by distracting the periosteum. In order to investigate the influence of distractor framework on the PDO, we utilized three-dimensional (3D) printing technology to fabricate three kinds of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) scaffolds with different pore sizes in this study.

Background: To investigate Kip1 ubiquitination-promoting complex 1 (KPC1) expression and its relationship with NF-κB p50 in gastric cancer cell lines.

Methods: The expression of KPC1 and NF-κB p50 in tissue samples from 159 gastric cancer patients after tumor resection and normal gastric mucosa samples from 56 patients as negative controls was retrospectively studied. The relationship between KPC1, NF-κB p50, and clinicopathological factors was analyzed, and the correlation between KPC1 and cytoplasmic NF-κB p50 was determined.

Study Question: Is a maternal history of spontaneous abortion (SA) associated with an increased risk of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in offspring?

Summary Answer: Our results suggest an association between maternal history of SA and ADHD in offspring, with the risk increasing with the number of maternal SA and highest in the firstborn children whose mothers had had recurrent SAs after adjusting for a number of potential confounders.

What Is Known Already: A history of SA has been associated with more complications in next pregnancies and adverse childbirth outcomes, which are risk factors for ADHD in the offspring. However, no previous study has investigated whether maternal SA increases risk of ADHD in the offspring.

Altered expression of circular RNAs (circRNAs) has been identified in various human diseases. In this study, we investigated whether circRNAs function as competing endogenous RNAs to regulate the pathological process of temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJOA). High-throughput sequencing of mRNA (RNA seq) was performed to detect the expression of circRNAs in TMJOA and control synovial tissues isolated from humans.

The exclusion of other chronic liver diseases including "excess" alcohol intake has until now been necessary to establish a diagnosis of metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD). However, given our current understanding of the pathogenesis of MAFLD and its rising prevalence, "positive criteria" to diagnose the disease are required. In this work, a panel of international experts from 22 countries propose a new definition for the diagnosis of MAFLD that is both comprehensive and simple, and is independent of other liver diseases.

An outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection (2019 coronavirus disease, COVID-19) since December 2019, from Wuhan, China, has been posing a significant threat to global human health. The clinical features and outcomes of Chinese patients with COVID-19 have been widely reported. Increasing evidence has witnessed the frequent incident liver injury in COVID-19 patients, and it is often manifested as transient elevation of serum aminotransferases; however, the patients seldom have liver failure and obvious intrahepatic cholestasis, unless pre-existing advanced liver disease was present.

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are being found to play an increasingly important role in the development of tumors. However, their biological functions and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Using information from GEO Datasets, we found that the lncRNA LINC00588 was downregulated in osteosarcoma (OS) in bone but was upregulated in the metastatic tumor present in the lung.

Patient-derived organoids can recapitulate parental tumor heterogeneity. In a recent study in Cell, Jacob et al. cultivated glioblastoma organoids (GBOs) to mimic tumor heterogeneity and chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T cell immunotherapy, applied it for xenograft establishment and drug testing, and generated a biobank for the timely start of post-operation therapy.

Currently, implantable fibrous medical devices still suffer from invisibility under current clinical imaging techniques. To address this problem, 2, 3, 5-triiodobenzoic acid (TIBA) was recruited as a contrast agent, and then a set of iodinated poly(-dioxanone) (PPDO) fibers was fabricated via melt-spinning hybrid blends of PPDO with TIBA (PPDO/TIBA). The impact of TIBA content on the rheological behavior of blends was evaluated firstly.

Purpose: Although laboratory studies suggest a potential role of magnesium (Mg) in weight regulation, human studies relating Mg intake to body weight are limited. This study sought to prospectively examine the association between Mg intake and incidence of obesity and related anthropometric and biochemical indicators.

Methods: The Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study recruited 5115 American young adults, aged 18-30 years, at baseline in 1985-6, and re-examined them in eight follow-ups.

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) comprise a group of hypertension-related diseases and represent the most common medical disorders in pregnancy. The aim of this study was to investigate the risks of adverse pregnancy outcomes in patients with different types of HDP, including gestational hypertension, chronic hypertension, preeclampsia (PE, early or late onset), PE superimposed on chronic hypertension (superimposed PE), eclampsia, and HELLP syndrome. Data from a multicenter retrospective patient cohort in China were analyzed.

Purpose: To arthroscopically evaluate the trans-coracoacromial ligament glenohumeral (GH) injection technique by understanding intra-articular needle-tip placement and potential misplacement and complications.

Methods: The technique relies on the palpation of 3 bony landmarks: anterolateral corner of the acromion, superolateral border of the coracoid tip, and curved depression of the distal clavicle. The skin entry site lies on the line connecting the curved depression of the distal clavicle and superolateral border of the coracoid tip, two-thirds of the way from the former and one-third of the way from the latter.

To date, assessment tools for older people are different between hospitals and nursing homes in China. The difference between assessment tools can lead to poor communication of information between hospitals and nursing homes, which causes discontinuity of care and adverse outcomes when older people are transferred between these different settings. Continuity Assessment Record and Evaluation (CARE) is a comprehensive geriatric assessment tool developed in the United States of America.

Low sleep duration in adults is correlated with psychiatric and cognitive problems. We performed for the first time a large-scale analysis of sleep duration in children, and how this relates to psychiatric problems including depression, to cognition, and to brain structure. Structural MRI was analyzed in relation to sleep duration, and psychiatric and cognitive measures in 11,067 9-11-year-old children from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study, using a linear mixed model, mediation analysis, and structural equation methods in a longitudinal analysis.
