Resin monomers from dental composite materials leached due to incomplete polymerization or biodegradation may cause contact allergies and damage dental pulp. The cytotoxicity of dental resin monomers is due to a disturbance of intracellular redox equilibrium, characterized by an overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and depletion of reduced glutathione (GSH). Oxidative stress caused by dental resin monomers leads to the disturbance of vital cell functions and induction of cell apoptosis in affected cells.

Methacryloxylethyl cetyl ammonium chloride (DMAE-CB) is a polymerizable antibacterial monomer and has been proved as an effective strategy to achieve bioactive bonding with reliable bacterial inhibitory effects. However, the toxicity of DMAE-CB may hamper its wide application in clinical situations. Thus, this study was designed to investigate the toxicity of DMAE-CB and explore the possible protective effects of N-acetyl cysteine (NAC).

Background: Joint-sparing surgery of a patient's native joint for osteosarcoma likely affords better function and comparable survival. However, it sometimes is challenging to resect a juxtaarticular osteosarcoma in a way that preserves the affected epiphysis because wide margins are necessary to minimize the risk of local recurrence. If there was a method to resect a tumor close to the joint and treat a potentially positive margin to prevent recurrence, it might allow salvage of a joint that otherwise might be lost.

Background: The purpose of this study was to compare the midterm functional and oncological outcomes of patients with distal radial tumours treated with en bloc tumour excision and osteoarticular allograft reconstruction with or without a Sauvé-Kapandji (S-K) procedure.
Materials And Method: All cases of osteoarticular allograft reconstruction with or without the S-K procedure following resection of distal radial tumours (giant-cell tumour in 13, desmoplastic fibroma in two, osteosarcoma in one and malignant fibrous histiocytoma in one) performed from 2000 to 2009 were evaluated by clinical and radiologic examinations; the complications, functional outcomes and Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MSTS) score were recorded.
Results: Seventeen patients (seven with the S-K procedure and 10 without the S-K procedure) with an average age of 31.

In an attempt to establish the advantages of fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) studies over conventional cytogenetic (CC) analysis, a total of 2302 de novo MDS patients from 31 Chinese institutions were prospectively selected in the present study for both CC and standardized FISH analysis for +8, -7/7q-, -5/5q-, 20q- and-Y chromosomal abnormalities. CC analysis was successful in 94.0% of the patients; of these patients, 35.

Sertoli cells (SCs) function as "nurse cells," which play crucial roles in supporting spermatogenesis through establishing a unique and essential environment in the male reproductive tract. Given the important roles of SCs in male fertility, this study was designed to evaluate the effect of diosgenin, an aglycone of the steroidal saponin, on TM4 cell proliferation and to elucidate the possible mechanisms. We showed that diosgenin increased the proliferation of TM4 cell and primary SCs in a time- and concentration-dependent manner.

We investigated the characteristics of Chinese SLE patients by analyzing the association between specific autoantibodies and clinical manifestations of 2104 SLE patients from registry data of CSTAR cohort. Significant (P<0.05) associations were found between anti-Sm antibody, anti-rRNP antibody, and malar rash; between anti-RNP antibody, anti-SSA antibody, and pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH); between anti-SSB antibody and hematologic involvement; and between anti-dsDNA antibody and nephropathy.

Objectives: To estimate the prevalence of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) and risk factors for PAH in patients registered in the Chinese SLE Treatment and Research group (CSTAR) database, the first online registry of Chinese patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).
Methods: A prospective cross-sectional study of patients with SLE was conducted using the CSTAR registry. Resting transthoracic echocardiography was used to estimate pulmonary artery pressure (PAP); PAH was defined as systolic PAP (PASP)≥40 mmHg.

Background: Amputation has been most commonly considered the only option to achieve local tumor control for calcaneal malignancies. Advances in oncologic treatment modalities and wide resection have made limb salvage increasingly possible. We retrospectively reviewed nine patients with calcaneal malignancies treated with different surgical options.

Objective: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is an important risk factor for stroke. The primary purpose of this study was to estimate the 1-year direct and indirect costs of ischemic stroke in Chinese patients with AF.
Method: A total of 300 charts were selected and reviewed in 18 hospitals from neurology departments in six major cities of China nationwide.

Icariin (ICA), a major constituent of flavonoids from the Chinese medical herb Epimedium brevicornum Maxim, is found to be protective for male reproductive ability, with the underlying mechanism largely unknown. Our study here investigated the effects of ICA on Sertoli cells, which act as nurse cells for the germ cells developing. Icariin was found to stimulate Sertoli cell proliferation in a dose-dependent manner.

Background: It is a challenge to perform a joint-preserving resection for patients with bone sarcomas in the proximal humerus. We determined whether osteotomy under navigation guidance made joint-saving resection possible for juxtaarticular humeral sarcomas while adhering to oncological principles.
Method: Between January 2008 and July 2010, joint-preserving surgeries were performed on six patients with proximal humeral sarcomas under navigation guidance.

Background: Advances in oncologic treatment modalities and wide resection have made limb salvage procedures in calcaneal malignancy increasingly possible. However, reconstructions of the calcaneal remain a major surgical challenge because of the rarity and specific anatomy of this condition.
Methods: we retrospectively reviewed five patients who had primary calcaneal malignancy and underwent total calcanectomy and reconstructions with the distally pedicled osteocutaneous folded fibular flap between 2001 and 2007.
