Article Synopsis
  • Patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) are at higher risk for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events (CCEs), which significantly contribute to mortality rates in this population.
  • This study aimed to create a predictive model to identify which SLE patients are at a higher risk for CCEs using data from 2399 patients over a 3-year follow-up.
  • The resulting model includes nine key risk factors and has shown strong predictive power, indicating it could be useful in routine clinical assessments of SLE patients to better manage their risk of CCEs.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a primary liver cancer with high pathogenicity and extremely poor prognosis. The role of circular RNAs (circRNAs) in HCC carcinogenesis and progression remains to be determined. Based on the analysis of HCC-related databases, as well as the expression analysis and identification of 25 HCC patient tissues and HCC cell lines, we found that the hsa_circ_0031431 (circCOCH) is significantly highly expressed in HCC tissues and cell lines.

Ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury leads to a low success rate of skin flap transplantation in reconstruction surgery, thus requiring development of new treatments. Necroptosis and apoptosis pathways, along with overexpression of reactive oxygen species and pro-inflammatory factors in skin flap transplantation, are deemed as potential therapeutic targets. This study provides a paradigm for nanozyme-mediated microenvironment maintenance to improve the survival rate of the transplanted skin flap.

Overexpression of CXCR7 accelerates tumor growth and metastasis of lung cancer cells.

Respir Res

October 2020

Department of Immunology and Microbiology, School of Basic Medical Science, Xi'an Jiaotong University Health Science Center, Xi'an, 710061, China.

Background: Under physiological conditions, CXCL12 modulates cell proliferation, survival, angiogenesis, and migration mainly through CXCR4. Interestingly, the newly discovered receptor CXCR7 for CXCL12 is highly expressed in many tumor cells as well as tumor-associated blood vessels, although the level of CXCR7 in normal cells is low. Recently, many studies have suggested that CXCR7 promotes cell growth and metastasis in more than 20 human malignancies, among which lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-associated deaths worldwide.

Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) have been applied in prevention from allograft rejection based on their immunomodulatory effects. However, conflicting results have been presented among recent studies, for which one possibility being acknowledged is that the exact effect is determined by the microenvironment when MSCs are applied in vivo. Using a hind limb composite tissue allograft model, we investigate the influence of IFN-γ-preconditioning on the immunomodulatory effects of MSCs and the subsequent allograft survival.
