This study evaluated the global burden of thyroid cancer (TC) from 1990 to 2021, analyzing its association with sociodemographic factors, sex, age, risk factors, and future projections. Using 2021 Global Burden of Disease data, we analyzed TC incidence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) across populations. Risk factors were assessed, and future trends forecasted using the Bayesian age-period-cohort model.

Objective: This study aimed to explore the expression and biological functions of SIRT3 in colorectal cancer cells (HCT-116), the impacts of sulforaphane on the ferroptosis of HCT-116 cells and the involvement of the SIRT3/AMPK/mTOR axis in those effects.

Methods: SIRT3-overexpressing (OE) and SIRT3-knockout (KO) cell lines were treated with different concentrations of sulforaphane, RSL-3, and IKE. Cell viability, intracellular ROS, MDA, iron levels, as well as mRNA and protein expressions of target genes were measured.

Rationale: Patients with schizophrenia with second-generation antipsychotics (SGAs) treatment have shown an increased risk of bone fragility and susceptibility to fracture; however, it is still unclear whether this risk is derived from the effect of antipsychotics on balance of bone metabolism.

Objectives: We investigated the changes of two bone turnover biomarkers (BTMs) concentrations in people with schizophrenia receiving SGAs: procollagen type I aminoterminal propeptide (PINP) and C-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen (CTX-1) as BTMs of osteogenesis and bone resorption, respectively, to explore how antipsychotics contribute to bone fragility.

Methods: We recruited 59 Chinese male patients with schizophrenia (32 drug-naïve first-episode (DNFE) patients and 27 chronic patients) to undergo 8 weeks SGAs treatment.

Background: Studies have shown that oral oxycontin tablets can be used for opioid titration. The European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) guidelines for adult cancer pain recommend opioid titration through the parenteral route, usually the intravenous or subcutaneous route. Patient-controlled subcutaneous analgesia (PCSA) with hydromorphone needs further evaluation for opioid titration.

Lung cancer, one of the most deadly and dangerous types of cancer in the world, kills many men and women every year. Activation of fibroblast growth factor signals plays a role in the pathogenesis of several cancers, including lung cancer. Also, this factor may indicate prognosis and is related to the survival rate in patients with NSCLC.

Age and Sex Affect Essential Tremor (ET) Plus: Clinical Heterogeneity in ET Based on the National Survey in China.

Aging Dis

August 2023

Department of Neurology, Department of Geriatric Neurology, Xiangya Hospital, Central South University, Changsha, Hunan, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The 2018 consensus introduced the term "essential tremor plus" (ET plus) to differentiate between pure essential tremor (ET) and its more complex form, which includes additional symptoms.
  • A study in China assessed 1160 patients, revealing more females and older onset ages in the ET plus group compared to pure ET, as well as factors linked to ET plus, like head tremors and lower education levels.
  • The findings indicate that while pure ET has a bimodal onset distribution, ET plus presents a single peak in the 6th decade, raising questions about whether they are distinct disorders or stages of the same condition.

Background: The correlation between cognitive function and lipid profiles, including total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and triglycerides, is inconsistent.

Aims: This cross-sectional study investigated the association between serum lipid levels and the prevalence of cognitive impairment among community-dwelling older adults and explored this difference in association by gender and urban-rural residency.

Methods: Participants aged 65 and above in urban and rural areas were recruited between 2018 and 2020, selected from the Hubei Memory and Aging Cohort Study.

  • * Out of 240 patients, 191 had hydronephrosis, while 49 had hydronephrosis accompanied by pyonephrosis, with a significant difference in HU values between the two groups (mean of 15.46 for pyonephrosis vs. 5.5 for hydronephrosis).
  • * The research identified a cut-off HU value of 9.5 that can effectively predict pyonephrosis, achieving 71.4% sensitivity and 70.2% specificity

Following the publication of this paper, it was drawn to the Editors' attention by a concerned reader that data shown in various of the panels portraying the results from flow cytometric experiments in Fig. 2D, 5D and 6D were strikingly similar to data appearing in different form in other articles by different authors. Owing to the fact that the contentious data in the above article had already been published elsewhere, or were already under consideration for publication, prior to its submission to , the Editor has decided that this paper should be retracted from the Journal.

Purpose: An increasing number of studies have shown that insulinoma-associated protein 1 (INSM1) is a robust marker for the diagnosis of gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms (GEP-NEN). The overall diagnostic accuracy of INSM1 for GEP-NEN remains unclear. The purpose of this study is to estimate the diagnostic value of INSM1 for GEP-NEN through a meta-analysis.

Generalized chest CT and lab curves throughout the course of COVID-19.

Sci Rep

Center for Interventional Oncology, Radiology and Imaging Sciences, NIH Clinical Center and National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD, 20892, USA.

A better understanding of temporal relationships between chest CT and labs may provide a reference for disease severity over the disease course. Generalized curves of lung opacity volume and density over time can be used as standardized references from well before symptoms develop to over a month after recovery, when residual lung opacities remain. 739 patients with COVID-19 underwent CT and RT-PCR in an outbreak setting between January 21st and April 12th, 2020.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the effects of metformin and insulin on COVID-19 outcomes in patients with pre-existing type 2 diabetes, revealing that those with diabetes experience more adverse outcomes compared to non-diabetic patients.
  • - Pre-admission use of metformin was associated with a significantly lower rate of intensive care unit admissions, while in-hospital insulin use was linked to a higher rate of invasive ventilation.
  • - The findings suggest that metformin may be beneficial for diabetes patients with COVID-19 before hospital admission, whereas insulin should be used cautiously during their hospital stay.

Herein, we report on the design and development of functionalized acrylic polymeric nanoparticles with Spiropyrans (SPs) and imidazole moieties via superficial polymerizations. Then, Au ions were immobilized and reduced on their surface to obtain photoresponsive gold-decorated polymer nanoparticles(Au-NPs). The synthesized Au-NPs were surface adapted with biotin as specific targeting tumor penetration cells and enhance the intercellular uptake through the endocytosis.

Eur Radiol

May 2021

Center for Interventional Oncology, Radiology and Imaging Sciences, NIH Clinical Center and National Cancer Institute, Center for Cancer Research, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to understand the early infection dynamics of asymptomatic and pre-symptomatic patients with SARS-CoV-2 by analyzing clinical, lab, and imaging data.
  • Out of 74 patients examined, 65% showed CT scan infiltrates before any symptoms appeared, with ground glass opacities being the most common finding.
  • The findings suggest that certain factors like body temperature and lab results could help identify asymptomatic patients at risk of developing symptoms, making CT scans a valuable tool in early detection of COVID-19.
