Background: Sulfasalazine (SSZ) is commonly prescribed for the treatment of ulcerative colitis, rheumatoid arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis. However, it can also trigger a severe drug reaction known as Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms (DRESS) or Drug-Induced Hypersensitivity Syndrome (DIHS). This article aims to analyze the clinical characteristics of DRESS/DIHS induced by SSZ and provide evidence for clinical diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.

Pyroptosis, an inflammatory regulated cell death (RCD) mechanism, is characterized by cellular swelling, membrane rupture, and subsequent discharge of cellular contents, exerting robust proinflammatory effects. Recent studies have significantly advanced our understanding of pyroptosis, revealing that it can be triggered through inflammasome- and caspase-independent pathways, and interacts intricately with other RCD pathways (e.g.

Voriconazole, a broad-spectrum antifungal agent, is considered the first-line treatment for invasive aspergillosis. In this article, we report three cases of patients who experienced visual disturbances and hallucinations following voriconazole therapy for invasive pulmonary aspergillosis. These symptoms appeared within 1 week after initiating voriconazole administration and resolved upon discontinuation or dose reduction of the drug.

Electronic address:

Aims: The dysregulated Wnt/β-Catenin signaling pathway leads to occurrence of various diseases, and abnormal activation of β-Catenin is a major characteristic of human HCC. FZD7 is a positive regulator of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway, and its upregulation is related to increase of β-catenin expression and carcinogenesis in human HCC. However, mechanisms underlying FZD7 upregulation in HCC remain elusive.

Electronic address:

Organelle-targeted photosensitizers (PSs) offer valuable tools for improving photodynamic therapy (PDT), yet systematic studies on how different organelles influence phototherapeutic outcomes are limited. In particular, the connection between organelle targeting and various modes of programmed cell death remains unclear. In this study, we developed a series of PSs using the Coumarin-Quinazolinone (CQ) scaffold, each designed to target different organelles, including the mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum (ER), lysosome, and nucleolus.

Injectable self-assembling peptide hydrogel as a promising vitreous substitute.

J Control Release

December 2024

Hunan Provincial Key Laboratory of Animal Models and Molecular Medicine, State Key Laboratory of Chemo/Bio-Sensing and Chemometrics, School of Biomedical Sciences, Hunan University, Changsha 410082, Hunan, PR China; Greater Bay Area Institute for Innovation, Hunan University, Guangzhou 511300, Guangdong, PR China. Electronic address:

Vitreoretinal diseases pose significant threats to vision, often requiring vitrectomy and substitution of vitreous humor to restore ocular structure and visual function. However, existing substitutes have limitations that compromise patient outcomes. Supramolecular hydrogels, particularly peptide-based formulations, have emerged as promising alternatives due to their superior optical clarity, biocompatibility, and viscoelasticity.

Long-term impact of air pollution on heart failure readmission in unstable angina patients.

Sci Rep

September 2024

Department of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Xiangtan Central Hospital, The Affiliated Hospital of Hunan University, Xiangtan, 411100, China.

Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death worldwide, with air pollution's impact on cardiovascular health being closely monitored. However, the specific effects of air pollution on the risk of hospital readmission for heart failure (HF) in patients with unstable angina (UA) have not been fully explored. We conducted a retrospective study involving 12,857 consecutive patients diagnosed with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) between January 2015 and March 2023.

Cryo-EM structures of Candida albicans Cdr1 reveal azole-substrate recognition and inhibitor blocking mechanisms.

Nat Commun

September 2024

Affiliated Hospital of Hunan University/Xiangtan Central Hospital, School of Biomedical Sciences, Hunan University, Changsha, China.

In Candida albicans, Cdr1 pumps azole drugs out of the cells to reduce intracellular accumulation at detrimental concentrations, leading to azole-drug resistance. Milbemycin oxime, a veterinary anti-parasitic drug, strongly and specifically inhibits Cdr1. However, how Cdr1 recognizes and exports azole drugs, and how milbemycin oxime inhibits Cdr1 remain unclear.

Background: Stroke etiology could influence the outcomes in patients with basilar-artery occlusion (BAO). This study aimed to evaluate the differences in efficacy and safety of best medical treatment (BMT) plus endovascular treatment (EVT) versus BMT alone in acute BAO across different stroke etiologies.

Methods: The study was a post hoc analysis of the ATTENTION trial (Trial of Endovascular Treatment of Acute Basilar-Artery Occlusion), which was a multicenter, randomized trial at 36 centers in China from February 2021 to September 2022.

The human intestinal tract constitutes a complex ecosystem, made up of countless gut microbiota, metabolites, and immune cells, with hypoxia being a fundamental environmental characteristic of this ecology. Under normal physiological conditions, a delicate balance exists among these complex "residents", with disruptions potentially leading to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The core pathology of IBD features a disrupted intestinal epithelial barrier, alongside evident immune and microecological disturbances.
