The activated clotting time (ACT) is routinely used for monitoring of heparin effects during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). However, ACT is not a specific assay for heparin and may be influenced by several other factors, which may be misleading with regard to the proper administration of heparin and protamine. In this pilot study, we compared a new test, the high-dose thrombin time (HiTT), with the conventional ACT test for both in vitro and in vivo heparin-induced anticoagulation.

500 Tru-cut thyroid tissue specimens were analyzed by ABC immunohistochemistry technique by using monoclonal antibodies specific for activated lymphocytes, cytokines and HLA-DR antigen. The study revealed that DR antigen expression on thyrocytes was positively correlated with the total number of thyroid infiltrating cells, the percentage of Tac + cells, TLiSA1 + cells, T9+ cells, interferon-r+ cells, interleukin-2+ cells, especially I2+ cells, tumor necrosis factor+ cells and also positively correlated with serum TSH, thyroid microsomal antibody, thyroid globulin antibody levels. The DR expression on thyrocytes was most intense in autoimmune thyroiditis, with subacute thyroiditis, thyrotoxicosis with thyroiditis, Graves disease, goiter following in sequence and thyroid tumor being the weakest.

Four probes that recognize D2S44, D17S79, D4S163 and D18S27 loci, were used to produce DNA profiles of 8- to 10-week-old chorionic villus samples and from blood samples of their respective parents. A total of 30 pedigrees were analyzed. The results showed strict Mendelian inheritance.

To research the mechanism of cartilage injury in non-purulent arthritis we have used the method of chondrocytes in monolayer culture in vitro and have observed the effect of free radicals generated by the xanthine oxidase and xanthine on DNA, matrix proteoglycan (PG) and collagen synthesis of human embryo chondrocytes. Our results showed that oxygen free radicals generated by xanthine oxidase and xanthine inhibited strongly the synthesis of DNA, PG and collagen of human embryo chondrocytes. On the bases of these results we suggest that oxygen free radicals from polymorphonuclear leukocytes and phagocytes would be important factors of cartilage injury in the arthritis.

TNF mRNA expression in cervical carcinoma was observed by the use of 3H and digoxigenin labelled TNF-alpha cDNA probes and in situ hybridization technique. Of 33 cancer samples tested, 30 were seen to have positive TNF mRNA expression in cancer cells and in some tumor infiltrating lymphocytes, the average positive rate being 12.18% and 3.

Bone biopsy was performed in 429 cases of uremic bone disease and they were classified histologically into 3 groups--high turnover 129 (30%), low turnover 102 (24%) and mixed type 198 (46%) cases. The histological features of the high turnover type were increased corrected mineralization rate (CMR) and osteoclast member and decreased mineralization lay time (MLT), while those of the low turnover type were on the contrary. In the mixed there were decrease of CMR and increase of MLT and osteoclast number.

Two kinds of heterogenous inorganic bone (HAB), lower temperature treated HAB (LHAB) and higher temperature treated HAB (HHAB), were implanted and observed by technetium-99m bone imaging and mechanical strength test. The results confirmed that the LHAB possessed biocompatibility and osteoinductivity. Half a year after implantation, LHAB induced bone formation and bridged large osseous defect.

By means of intraneural micro recording (INMR) and intraneural microstimulation (INMS), properties of receptive units innervated by A delta and C fibers of the superficial branch of the radial nerve were measured on humans. Thresholds of 24 A delta units to mechanical stimulation varied significantly; their receptive fields ranged from a single point to 75.4 mm2, with one to four receptive sensitive zones.

Single spinal dorsal horn neurons were recorded extracellularly with glass micropipettes, and the effect of stimulation of SI cortex or cerebral peduncle (CP) was observed on the long latency discharges (C-fiber evoked response) of the wide dynamic range (WDR) neurons induced by intense electrical skin stimulation. Inhibition was the predominant effect of SI cortex stimulation on the C-fiber evoked responses of WDR neurons. The effect of CP stimulation was similar to that of SI cortex stimulation, except that the former was much more effective than the latter.

The present study is undertaken to investigate the effect of systemic morphine on neurons in the lateral reticular nucleus (LRN) using extracellular recording techniques. The spontaneous activities of 64 neurons in the LRN area were tested with morphine (3-5 mg/kg, IV). Morphine excited 23 and inhibited 28 neurons tested, and 13 neurons were not affected.

Effects of osthole (Ost) and verapamil (Ver) were investigated in the isolated guinea-pig ileum and taeniae coli. In the isolated guinea-pig ileum or taeniae coli, Ost and Ver were both found to inhibit the contractions induced by acetylcholine (ACh), histamine (His) and KCl in a dose-dependent manner; and noncompetitively antagonize the CaCl2 cumulative dose-response curves, with pD2 values of 4.41 +/- 0.

From April 1986 to May 1990, 265 pupils aged 5 to 9 years in Xian suburbs were studied to evaluate long-term efficacy of plasma-derived hepatitis B vaccine made in China. Anti-HBs titers in vaccine group reached the highest at twelfth month after the first injection and decreased afterwards. The positive rate of anti-HBs decreased slow, but geometric mean titers of anti-HBs fell sharply.

Kalium and Magnesium ions are important cations in human body, both of them take part in many processes of metabolism in coordination. Injection of Kalii L-aspartatis and Magnesii L-aspartatis added to polarized liquid (GIK-Glucose, Insulin, Kalii Chlorid) might potentiate its effect and reduce carbon dioxide and ammonia in blood. 72 patients with various heart emergencies and other critical diseases were treated with potentiated polarized liquid (GIKL) with remarkable efficacy.

Infiltrating mononuclear cell (MNC) subsets and transferrin receptor (TfR) expression at the localized lesions were studied in 28 cases of gastric carcinoma and 36 cases of colorectal carcinoma by immunohistochemical technique by using a panel of monoclonal antibodies. The results showed that the percentage of T4+ cells in the infiltrating MNCs decreased while that of T8+ cells increased relatively and the T4/T8 ratios declined along with the progression of the tumor. The TfR positive rates in gastric and colorectal carcinomas were 73.

IL-2 level and IL-2R expression of peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) were measured in 25 patients with type III and advanced tuberculosis (TB). The results showed that IL-2 level in patients was lower than that in controls, and that in the patients whose history of TB was over 3 years was significantly lower than that in the patients whose history of TB was within 3 years; There was no significant difference between the IL-2R expression on unstimulated PBL from patients and controls. IL-2R expression in PHA-stimulated PBL after culturing 72 hours in patients was significantly lower than that in controls, and that in the patients over 3 years was significantly lower than that in the patients within 3 years.

Despite recent advances in hepatic surgery, management of unresectable carcinoma of the liver is still a challenging problem. From September 1988 through March 1989, 10 primary liver cancer patients were treated by hepatic artery embolization (HAE) using lipiodol-adriamycin with or without hepatic artery ligation (HAL). One of them received HAE twice in seven weeks.

This study was designed to assess the effectiveness of oral administration of diethylcarbamazine (DEC) on the treatment of asthmatics. When compared to baseline and placebo control DEC failed to improve significantly lung ventilation function within 3 hours in 28 asthmatics. In 11 patients with stable asthma a significant increase in MCH-PC20-FEV1 was noticed at 3 days after the use of DEC.
