Department of Anesthesiology, Shengli Clinical Medical College of Fujian Medical University, Fujian Provincial Hospital, Fuzhou, Fujian, People's Republic of China.

Purpose: Intrathecal morphine is increasingly used for pain management in laparoscopic colorectal surgery. While ropivacaine shows advantages of reduced cardiotoxicity and faster motor recovery compared to bupivacaine, the impact of intrathecal morphine-ropivacaine combination on postoperative recovery quality remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate this combination's effect on recovery outcomes after laparoscopic colorectal surgery.

Article Synopsis
  • Traditional Chinese medicine, specifically astilbin, is studied for its effectiveness in managing pain, focusing on its active components and methods of action.
  • Experiments using neuropathic rat models demonstrated that both systemic and spinal delivery of astilbin significantly reduced both chronic and acute pain behaviors, with specific effective dosing identified.
  • The study highlighted that astilbin works by influencing neuronal metabolic processes and modulating excitatory synaptic activity, leading to its pain-relieving effects.

Purpose: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a major psychiatric health issue among intensive care unit (ICU) survivors with post-intensive care syndrome (PICS). Although early PTSD intervention has been demonstrated to decrease the risk of progression from acute to chronic PTSD, information on the progression trajectory of short-term PTSD symptoms and modifiable risk factors in PICS patients is limited. This study aimed to explore the clinical progression trajectories of short-term PTSD symptoms and the associated factors in PICS patients by conducting a prospective longitudinal observational study.

Article Synopsis
  • A study examined the effectiveness of a combined intranasal premedication of dexmedetomidine and esketamine in reducing emergence delirium and postoperative negative behavioral changes in young children undergoing tonsillectomy/adenoidectomy compared to each drug alone.
  • The results showed that the combination significantly lowered the incidence of emergence delirium compared to esketamine alone, with a reduction from 38.1% to 9.4%, and also reduced postoperative negative behavioral changes compared to dexmedetomidine.
  • Overall, the combined premedication led to better sedation, easier separation from parents, improved acceptance of anesthetic masks, shorter recovery times, and higher parental satisfaction compared to using either drug by itself.

Article Synopsis
  • A gene called CDT1 is super active in certain cancers, especially in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD), where it helps control how cells copy themselves.
  • Research showed that CDT1 and another gene, E2F2, worked together more when people had LUAD, and reducing CDT1 made cancer cells grow and spread less.
  • Studying this in mice, scientists found that lowering CDT1 levels also helped shrink tumors, suggesting that CDT1 could be a target for new cancer treatments.

Hexavalent chromium [Cr (VI)] has been identified as a human carcinogen and environmental pollutant capable of affecting multiple systems in the human body. However, the specific mechanisms by which Cr (VI) affects the human nervous system remain unclear. Following confirmation of Cr (VI)'s toxic effects on rat astrocytes, this study explores the metabolites and associated metabolic pathways of rat astrocytes under different doses of Cr (VI) exposure.

Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media (CSOM) and Middle Ear Cholesteatoma are two common chronic otitis media diseases that often cause confusion among physicians due to their similar location and shape in clinical CT images of the internal auditory canal. In this study, we utilized the transfer learning method combined with CT scans of the internal auditory canal to achieve accurate lesion segmentation and automatic diagnosis for patients with CSOM and middle ear cholesteatoma. We collected 1019 CT scan images and utilized the nnUnet skeleton model along with coarse grained focal segmentation labeling to pre-train on the above CT images for focal segmentation.

Cancer screening in hospitalized ischemic stroke patients: a multicenter study focused on multiparametric analysis to improve management of occult cancers.

EPMA J

March 2024

Department of Neurology and Department of Neuroscience, School of Medicine, The First Affiliated Hospital of Xiamen University, Xiamen University, 55 Zhenhai Road, Xiamen, 361003 China.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted to address the connection between cancer and ischemic stroke (IS), highlighting how shared risk factors create a "vicious cycle" that complicates diagnosis and treatment for IS patients who may also have occult cancer.
  • The research involved analyzing clinical data from IS patients and employed various predictive models to identify occult cancer, aiming to create an effective diagnostic tool (nomogram) for use in clinical settings.
  • The best model, based on logistic regression, incorporated factors like ischemic lesion regions and blood markers, achieving a strong predictive ability with an area under the ROC curve (AUC) of 0.871 in the training dataset.
