Cancer Manag Res

June 2018

Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery, Xiamen Cancer Hospital, The First Affiliated Hospital of Xiamen University, Xiamen, People's Republic of China.

Background: Several previous studies have reported the prognostic value of special -rich sequence-binding protein 1 (SATB1) in solid tumors. However, these studies produced inconsistent results because of their various limitations, including small sample sizes. Here, we describe a meta-analysis based on 17 studies including 3144 patients to search for connections between SATB1 overexpression and overall survival (OS) of patients with solid tumors.

Purpose: F-FDG uptake in irradiated non-tumour-affected oesophagus (NTO) on restaging PET is a potential surrogate for the measurement of radiation-induced inflammation. Radiation-induced inflammation itself has been shown to be of high prognostic relevance in patients undergoing preoperative radiochemotherapy (RCT) for locally advanced oesophageal cancer. We assessed the prognostic relevance of FDG uptake in the NTO in an independent cohort of patients treated with definitive RCT.

The Road Less Traveled: Should We Omit Prophylactic Cranial Irradiation for Patients With Small Cell Lung Cancer?

Clin Lung Cancer

July 2018

Department of Radiation Oncology, Shandong Cancer Hospital and Institute, Shandong Cancer Hospital affiliated to Shandong University, Jinan, Shandong, China. Electronic address:

New randomized data from Japan have raised questions regarding the use of prophylactic cranial irradiation for patients with extensive-stage small-cell lung cancer but without detectable brain metastases on magnetic resonance imaging. In the present focused review, we examine the general role of prophylactic cranial irradiation in the management of small-cell lung cancer and present relevant controversies from both sides of the discussion. Future directions for clinical investigation and research are also highlighted.

Introduction: Although some circRNAs have been found to regulate the progression of malignancies, their functions and coupled molecular mechanisms are still unclear. In our study, we sought to assess the underlying molecular mechanisms of circRNAs in breast cancer and therefore explored the differentially expressed circRNAs and co-expression networks, followed by in vitro experiments.

Materials And Methods: High-throughput RNA sequencing was performed to obtain an unbiased profile of circRNA expression.

Article Synopsis
  • Glycolysis, specifically the enzyme aldolase, plays a significant role in cancer progression, particularly in colon cancer, where its expression is found to increase with disease severity and metastasis.
  • The study revealed that silencing aldolase A reduces colon cancer cell proliferation and invasion, indicating its involvement in promoting the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) phenotype.
  • High levels of aldolase A are linked to poorer patient outcomes and suggest that it may serve as both a therapeutic target and a potential biomarker for assessing cancer prognosis.

Article Synopsis
  • This study examined how lymphadenectomy (surgical removal of lymph nodes) impacts survival in patients with advanced epithelial ovarian cancer, analyzing data from over 3,000 patients.
  • Lymphadenectomy was performed on 62.5% of the participants, and while it improved cause-specific survival (CSS), the positive effects were strongest in patients with no residual tumor.
  • Patients who had more than 10 lymph nodes removed showed better survival outcomes compared to those with fewer or no lymph nodes removed, especially when there was no significant residual tumor.

Out of the darkness and into the light: New strategies for improving treatments for locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer.

Cancer Lett

May 2018

Department of Radiation Oncology, Shandong Cancer Hospital and Institute, Shandong Cancer Hospital Affiliated to Shandong University, Jinan, Shandong, 250117, China. Electronic address:

The standard treatment for locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer (LA NSCLC) includes surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or some combination of these modalities. Many clinical trials have been conducted in attempts to intensify treatment for LA NSCLC, but with little improvement. A therapeutic plateau had been reached, with no major progress in extending survival for patients with this disease.

Microsatellite stability and mismatch repair proficiency in nasopharyngeal carcinoma may not predict programmed death-1 blockade resistance.

Oncotarget

December 2017

Department of Radiation Oncology, Xiamen Cancer Hospital, The First Affiliated Hospital of Xiamen University, Teaching Hospital of Fujian Medical University, Xiamen, China.

The US FDA granted accelerated approval to pembrolizumab for microsatellite instability-high and mismatch repair deficient cancers. The response of programmed death-1 blockade in mismatch repair proficiency (pMMR) colorectal cancer is very poor, however, whether such treatment is effective in pMMR nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) remains unknown. We report a case of a 51-year-old man with NPC.

NLRP6, a member of the Nod-like receptor family, protects against chemically induced intestinal injury and colitis-associated colon cancer. However, the cellular mechanisms involved in this NLRP6-mediated protection remain unclear. Here, we show that NLRP6 was down-regulated in approximately 75% of primary gastric cancer cases and exhibited significant associations with advanced clinical-stage lymph node metastasis and poor overall survival.
