Aerosol light absorption has been widely considered as a contributing factor to the worsening of particulate pollution in large urban areas, primarily through its role in stabilizing the planetary boundary layer (PBL). Here, we report that absorption-dominated aerosol-radiation interaction can decrease near-surface fine particulate matter concentrations ([PM]) at a large-scale during wintertime haze events. A "warm bubble" effect by the significant heating rate of absorbing aerosols above the PBL top generates a secondary circulation, enhancing the upward motion (downward motion) and the convergence (divergence) in polluted (relatively clean) areas, with a net effect of lowering near-surface [PM].

The nickel catalyzed multi-component cross-electrophile carbonylation which emerges as a powerful and efficient method for constructing diverse ketones has attracted increasing attention of organic chemists. However, the selectivity of this reaction poses a significant challenge. In this work, we have developed a current-regulated selective nickel-catalyzed electroreductive cross-electrophile carbonylation, which offers a direct convergent synthesis of β/γ-hydroxy ketones, which represent pivotal structural motifs found in numerous natural products, bioactive molecules, pharmaceutical compounds, and essential building blocks.

Mimicking natural enzymes through artificial enzyme engineering represents a powerful strategy to fine-tune the performance of photocatalysts, while the manipulation of electron transfer systems through atomic precision control is challenging. Herein, we reported a series of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) based on progressively oxidized phenothiazine (PTH) core as the platform for emulating Coenzyme Q, achieved through meticulous stepwise adjustments of their redox states. Compared to the original PTH-S-COF, the COFs with incrementally oxidized sulfur sites exhibited enhanced charge transfer efficiencies, facilitating efficient electron donation to O and thereby providing a favorable pathway for HO synthesis.

Hydrogel bioadhesives with adequate wet adhesion and swelling resistance are urgently needed in clinic. However, the presence of blood or body fluid usually weakens the interfacial bonding strength, and even leads to adhesion failure. Herein, profiting from the unique coupling structure of carboxylic and phenyl groups in one component (N-acryloyl phenylalanine) for interfacial drainage and matrix toughening as well as various electrostatic interactions mediated by zwitterions, a novel hydrogel adhesive (PAAS) is developed with superior tissue adhesion properties and matrix swelling resistance in challenging wet conditions (adhesion strength of 85 kPa, interfacial toughness of 450 J m, burst pressure of 514 mmHg, and swelling ratio of <4%).

Over the past decade, most of researches on the communication between the neurons are based on synapses. However, the changes in action potentials in neurons may produce complex electromagnetic fields in the media, which may also have an impact on the electrical activity of neurons. To explore this factor, we construct a two-layer neuronal network composed of identical Hindmarsh-Rose neurons.

This research scrutinizes the simultaneous evolution of each layer within a multilayered complex neural network and elucidates the effect of synaptic plasticity on inter-layer dynamics. In the absence of synaptic plasticity, a predominant feedforward effect is observed, resulting in the manifestation of complete synchrony in deep networks, with each layer assuming a chimera state. A significant increase in the number of synchronized neurons is observed as the layers augment, culminating in complete synchronization in the deeper sections.

Hydrogels with mechanical performances similar to load-bearing tissues are in demand for in vivo applications. In this work, inspired by the self-assembly behavior of amphiphilic polymers, polyurethane-based tough hydrogels with a multiple hydrogen-bond interlocked bicontinuous phase structure through in situ water-induced microphase separation strategy are developed, in which poly(ethylene glycol)-based polyurethane (PEG-PU, hydrophilic) and poly(ε-caprolactone)-based polyurethane (PCL-PU, hydrophobic) are blended to form dry films followed by water swelling. A multiple hydrogen bonding factor, imidazolidinyl urea, is introduced into the synthesis of the two polyurethanes, and the formation of multiple hydrogen bonds between PEG-PU and PCL-PU can promote homogeneous microphase separation for the construction of bicontinuous phase structures in the hydrogel network, by which the hydrogel features break strength of 12.

Background: Venous thromboembolic events (VTEs) are the second-leading cause of death in cancer patients, with an incidence of 5%-17% in lymphoma patients, particularly higher in those with non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). Existing risk assessment models (RAMs) like the Khorana and ThroLy scores have limitations and are inadequately validated for NHL patients. Coagulation markers such as D-dimer, thrombin-antithrombin complex (TAT), and thrombomodulin (TM) show a potential predictive value for cancer-associated VTE but lack extensive research in NHL.
