The algal-bacterial granular sludge (ABGS) system was established to explore the effect of 1% salinity conditions, determine the recovery process following salinity disturbance, and probe the impacts of two N-acyl-homoserine lactones (AHLs) on the system. Exposure to 1% salinity led to the reduction of filaments and an increase in TB-EPS contents within the ABGS system. The phosphorus removal performance of the ABGS system severely decreased at 1% salinity did not restore fully during the subsequent recovery stage, demonstrating that salinity stress induced long-term inhibition.

A laser particle analyzer (Malvern Instruments Analysis) was used to determine that the particle sizes of the raw SSP, SP, and FGD materials were concentrated between 5 and 40 μm, indicating that they were fine-grained minerals. SSP and SP are highly active alkaline substances.

NO-N transformation, the vital biological process, determines nitrogen removal and retention in aquatic environment. Suspended sediment (SPS) ubiquitous in freshwater ecosystems can accelerate the transitions from aerobic to anoxic states, inevitably impacting NO-N transformation. To elaborate on the microbial mechanism by which SPS content affected NO-N transformation, we explored nitrogen removal and retention, microbial communities, co-occurrence networks, and electron transfer behavior under different SPS content during the aerobic-anoxic transition.

This study develops a dynamics model of a microrobot vibrating in a blood vessel aiming to detect potential cancer metastasis. We derive an analytical solution for microrobot's motion, considering interactions with the vessel walls modelled by a linear spring-dashpot and a constant damping value for blood viscosity. The model facilitates instantaneous state transitions of the microrobot, such as contact with the vessel wall and free motion within the fluid.

N-termini Cyano group (CN) in metal hexacyanoferrates (MHCF) have been identified as specific-affinity sites for palladium (Pd), but C-termini CN do not effectively serve as Pd adsorption sites due to their stronger bonds with the metal ligands (M), which reduces the activity and density of CN. Herein, the optimization of directional coordination of cyano group C/N-termini by modulating the electronic structure of the M (Fe, Co, and Ni) in MHCF was investigated to reinforce the Pd recovery. Spectroscopic analyses and DFT calculations revealed that NiHCF exhibited N-site mono-coordination, whereas CoHCF displayed C-site mono-coordination due to spin-exchange interactions, leading to the strengthened N-Co bonds and weakened Fe-C bonds.

Algae-laden brackish water (ABW) has remarkably threatened drinking water safety in warm coastal areas. Although gravity-driven ceramic membrane filtration (GDCM) exhibits high potential in ABW treatment during decentralized water supply, membrane fouling is still a critical problem. Herein, GDCM was skillfully electro-functionalized (EGDCM) by in-situ electro-oxidation (ISEO) based on self-fabricated Ti/SnO-Sb dimensionally stable anode (DSA) (EO-EGDCM) and ex-situ electro-coagulation (ESEC) based on iron anode (EC-EGDCM) in this study.

Poverty in multi-ethnic regions has always been a concern due to its complex factors and persistent nature. Using a sample of 8,482 ethnic majority-headed households and 2,011 ethnic minority-headed households distributed in 200 villages of Wangqing County, China, this study uses hierarchical linear models to examine the factors of income at the household level, the ethnic disparities of the household-level effect, and the contextual effect on household-level outcomes. The findings suggest that, in comparison to the majority group, there exists a smaller income gap between male-headed and female-headed poor households within the minority group.

Flexible supercapacitors offer significant potential for powering next-generation flexible electronics. However, the mechanical and electrochemical stability of flexible supercapacitors under different flexibility conditions is limited by the weak bonding between neighboring layers, posing a major obstacle to their practical application. In this paper, natural coniferous pulp cellulose was successfully modified with ethylenediamine and NiSe/Cell-NH/MoS cellulose flexible electrodes (NCMF) were fabricated by phase transfer and hydrothermal methods.

WS is an attractive anode in alkali metal ion batteries (AMIBs) due to its 2D-layered structure and high theoretical capacity. However, the shuttle effect of sulfur and the spontaneous growth of W nanoparticles are key issues that limit the alkali-ion accommodation ability. Now, it is still a great challenge to achieve in situ control of the microstructure evolution paths in enclosed batteries for extending the cycling reversibility/lifespan.

Vanadium-based oxide cathodes are promising energy-storage systems for aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) because of their high energy density and safety, and low cost. However, their limited ion/electron transfer rates and rapid capacity decay pose challenges to their practical application. To overcome these limitations, VO nanoparticles are developed with surface oxygen vacancies integrated with N-doped carbon nanofibers (VO@NCNFs), using an electrospinning method combined with an in situ oxidation/reduction strategy.

Combining chemical oxidation and adsorption is highly desirable but challenging to remove organoarsenic compounds for water purification. Herein, we prepared a Zn-doped CuO (CuZnO-2) catalyst by incorporating Zn atoms into the CuO lattice, which results in abundant surface oxygen vacancies (OVs) and modulates the electronic structure of Cu-OVs-Zn sites for PMS activation to degrade p-arsanilic acid (p-ASA) and adsorb the secondary arsenic species simultaneously. The elevated d-band centers for Cu upward to the Fermi level can significantly strengthen the adsorption of PMS, p-ASA, and the generated arsenic species.

The effects of ionic regulation on the structure of membrane surface proteins and backwashing efficiency during ultrafiltration were investigated to reveal the mechanism of ionic mitigating membrane fouling. The repulsion between proteins and membrane was enhanced after ion regulation. With the extension of ultrafiltration time, the α-helix and random coil of membrane surface proteins were decreased, while the β-turn structure increased which was subjected to continuous regulation by Na, Zn and K at 4 min, 8 min and 12 min, respectively.

To explore the influence of storm runoff on bacterial metabolic activity and water quality in Jinpen Reservoir, three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy parallel factor analysis, high-throughput DNA sequencing technology, and Biolog technology were used to analyze variations in the components of dissolved organic matter, bacterial community composition, and microbial metabolic activity during three periods (before, during, and one month after runoff). The results showed that after storm runoff into the reservoir, the water temperature decreased, and dissolved oxygen in the middle of the water column increased significantly. Finally, the aerobic and low-temperature state in the middle water and anaerobic and low-temperature state in the bottom water was formed.

Obtaining a robust electrode composed of Sn-based metal oxides and carbonaceous matrix through nanoscale structure engineering is essential for effectively improving Li-ion batteries' electrochemical performance and stability. Herein, we report a bimetallic MoO-xSnO/Sn nanoparticles uniformly anchored on N, S co-doped graphene nanosheets (MoO-xSnO/Sn@NSG) as an anode electrode for Li-ion battery via a one-step hydrothermal and thermal treatment approach. In the MoO-xSnO/Sn nanocomposite, the generated Sn-O-Mo bond can modulate the electronic and composition structures to improve the intrinsic conductivity of SnO and reinforce the structural stability during cycles.
