Hemoglobin-binding α-synuclein levels in erythrocytes are elevated in patients with multiple system atrophy.

Neurosci Lett

October 2022

Department of Neurology, Dongfang Hospital, Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, No. 6 Fangxingyuan 1st Block, Fengtai District, Beijing 100078, China China. Electronic address:

Previous studies have shown that α-synuclein (α-syn) accumulation in the normal aging brain is associated with a parallel increase in hemoglobin-binding α-syn (Hb-α-syn) in the brain and peripheral erythrocytes (ERCs), indicating that Hb-α-syn levels in ERCs may reflect the α-syn changes in the brain. However, if there is any change in ERC Hb-α-syn levels in disease condition is unclear. In this study, Hb-α-syn levels in ERCs from 149 Patients with multiple system atrophy (MSA) and 149 healthy controls (HCs) were measured by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).

Background: Hypoxia is the hallmark of the tumor microenvironment (TME) and plays a critical role during the progress of tumor development. A variety of microRNAs (miRNAs) transmitted by tumor-derived exosomes were involved in intercellular communication. We aimed to elucidate the precise mechanism by which tumor cell-derived exosomes promote lung cancer development by affecting macrophage polarization under hypoxic conditions.

Till now, the effect of different embolic materials (particulate vs coil) on pre-embolization of carotid body tumors remains poorly understood. The aim of this study was to explore the comparative results between particulate and coil embolization for carotid body tumors. Thirty-seven patients with carotid body tumors who underwent embolization before surgical resection were reviewed and analyzed in this retrospective study between 2008 and 2020.

Background: Diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D) is a functional gastrointestinal disorder that severely affects patients' life. Moxibustion is believed to be an effective way to treat IBS-D. However, the therapeutic effects and the underlying mechanisms in symptom management of IBS-D by different moxibustion therapies remain unclear.

Electroacupuncture (EA) is a safe and effective method for treating obesity. However, how it modulates reward-related brain activity/functional connectivity and gut hormones remains unclear. We employed resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (RS-fMRI) and resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) to investigate EA induced changes in resting-state activity and RSFC in reward-related regions and its association with gut hormones in overweight/obese subjects who received real (n = 20) and Sham (n = 15) stimulation.

Background: Effect of miR-215 on the expression of tumor suppressor gene retinoblastoma (Rb)1 in Rb cell lines was investigated.

Methods: A total of 128 patients were selected. The expression of miR-215 in cancer and adjacent healthy tissues of the 128 patients was detected by reverse transcription-quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR).

Background & Objective: Effects of walnut intake on anthropometric measurements have been inconsistent among clinical studies. Thus, we conducted a meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials (RCTs) to evaluate and quantify the effects of walnut intake on anthropometric characteristics.

Methods: We carried out a systematic search of all available RCTs up to June 2019 in the following electronic databases: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar.

Center for Brain Imaging, School of Life Science and Technology, Xidian University, Xi'an, Shaanxi 710071, China. Electronic address:

Electroacupuncture (EA) is a safe method for treating obesity; however, its underlying neural mechanisms remain unclear. We employed resting-state-functional-magnetic-resonance-imaging (RS-fMRI) and amplitude-of-low-frequency-fluctuation (ALFF) to investigate acute/long-term effects of EA on brain activity and resting-state-functional-connectivity (RSFC) in overweight/obesity subjects who received real/Sham stimulation. For acute effects, 26 and 19 overweight/obesity subjects were included in EA and Sham groups respectively.

Multicompound determination for the quality control of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) may often be inadequate, since these compounds may not be associated with, or fully represent, the clinical effects of TCM. Moreover, the individual contributions of each constituent to the pharmacological effect are often not considered. In China, Porana sinensis is widely used as a substitute for Erycibe sources to treat joint pain and rheumatoid arthritis.

Shaanxi Collaborative Innovation Center of Chinese Medicinal Resources Industrialization, Shaanxi University of Chinese Medicine Xianyang 712083,China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on establishing a standard reference for Chinese herbal decoctions, specifically Scrophulariae Radix, to evaluate quality consistency in various dosage forms of Chinese medicine.
  • It involved collecting 15 batches of Scrophulariae Radix decoction pieces, preparing standard decoctions, and using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for analysis of key compounds (harpagide and harpagoside).
  • Results showed high transfer rates and a consistent HPLC fingerprint across samples, confirming the method's reliability for quality control in the preparation of Scrophulariae Radix dispensing granules.

Pathological cardiac hypertrophy is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the world. However, it is still unclear the molecular mechanism revealing the progression of the disease. In the study, we illustrated that the expression of leukocyte immunoglobulin-like receptor B4 (LILRB4), associated with the pathological development of various inflammatory diseases, was down-regulated in pressure overload-induced hearts of patients and mice.

The protective role of fibrinogen‑like‑protein 1 (FGL1) in liver injury has been reported previously. However, there are few studies on FGL1 expression in gastric cancer (GC) tissues, and the role of FGL1 in GC remains unclear. The aim of the present study was to investigate the correlation between FGL1 expression and prognosis in GC patients.

The neuroprotective effects of estrogen against cerebral ischaemia have been confirmed by multiple basic and clinical studies. However, most of these studies used exogenous estrogen administered via different injection methods, and the neuroprotective effects of endogenous estrogen produced by ovaries during different phases of estrous cycle and the underlying mechanisms involved have rarely been explored. In this study, we first identified the stage of estrous cycle via vaginal smears and then measured serum estradiol levels at each phase via radioimmunoassay.

Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Xijing Hospital, Fourth Military Medical University, Xi'an, 710032, PR China. Electronic address:

Glioblastoma is the most common brain tumor and is characterized with robust invasion and migration potential resulting in poor prognosis. Previous investigations have demonstrated that modeled microgravity (MMG) could decline the cell proliferation and attenuate the metastasis potential in several cell lines. In this study, we studied the effects of MMG on the invasion and migration potentials of glioblastoma in human glioblastoma U87 cells.
