Department of Central Laboratory, Xi'an No. 1 Hospital, The First Affiliated Hospital of Northwest University, No. 30, South Street, Beilin District, Xi'an, 710002, Shaanxi, China.

Article Synopsis
  • This study looked at how a lack of oxygen can affect fat movement in the brain, specifically from nerve cells (neurons) to support cells (astrocytes).
  • Researchers found that when the brain was deprived of oxygen, certain fats built up and a protein called ApoE became more active.
  • Different types of ApoE (like ApoE2, ApoE3, and ApoE4) affected how well these fats moved, with ApoE4 being less helpful, which might lead to new treatments for brain damage in babies.

Reduced corrosion of Zn alloy by HA nanorods for enhancing early bone regeneration.

Biomater Sci

February 2024

State-Key Laboratory for Mechanical Behavior of Materials, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Xi'an 710049, China.

Zinc alloys have emerged as promising materials for bone regeneration due to their moderate biodegradation rates. However, the blast release of Zn from Zn alloy substrates affects cell behaviors and the subsequent osseointegration quality, retarding their early service performance. To address this issue, extracellular matrix-like hydroxyapatite (HA) nanorods were prepared on Zn-1Ca (ZN) by a combined hydrothermal treatment (HT).

The function of S100A4 in pulmonary disease: A review.

Medicine (Baltimore)

April 2023

Department of Respiratory Medicine, Xi'an People's Hospital (Xi'an No. 4 Hospital), Xi'an, China.

S100 protein family, which represents 25 relatively small calcium binding proteins, is involved in many intracellular and/or extracellular processes, including differentiation, apoptosis, migration/invasion, Ca2+ homeostasis, inflammation, and tissue repair. As an important member, S100A4 was reported to have an abnormal expression in several lung diseases, such as lung cancer, pulmonary hypertension, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), etc. For example, in lung cancer, S100A4 was demonstrated to be associated to metastatic tumor progression and epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT).
