Delayed diagnosis in inflammatory bowel disease: Time to consider solutions.

World J Gastroenterol

September 2024

Department of General Surgery, Xi'an Jiaotong University Second Affiliated Hospital, Xi'an 710004, Shaanxi Province, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The editorial discusses a manuscript by Blüthner focusing on the issue of delayed diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which includes Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.
  • Delayed diagnosis often arises due to the nonspecific symptoms of IBD that can be confused with other conditions, and the limitations in current diagnostic methods.
  • Prompt diagnosis is critical to improve patient outcomes and reduce the risks of complications such as increased intestinal damage and a higher risk of colorectal cancer; thus, increasing awareness among physicians and patients, along with developing better diagnostic tools, is essential.

Targeting METTL3 enhances the chemosensitivity of non-small cell lung cancer cells by decreasing ABCC2 expression in an mA-YTHDF1-dependent manner.

Int J Biol Sci

September 2024

International Joint Research Center for Tumor Precision Medicine of Shaanxi Province and Department of Endocrinology, The First Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University, Xi'an 710061, P.R. China.

Patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) are easily resistant to first-line chemotherapy with paclitaxel (PTX) or carboplatin (CBP). N-methyladenosine (mA) methyltransferase-like 3 (METTL3) has crucial functions in mA modification and tumorigenesis. However, its role in chemoresistance of NSCLC is still elusive.

Purpose: This study retrospectively investigated whether infarction in specific Alberta Stroke Program Early CT Score (ASPECTS) regions is associated with clinical outcome in patients with symptomatic non-acute internal carotid or middle cerebral artery occlusion who underwent endovascular recanalisation (ER).

Methods: Preoperative ASPECTS and region of infarction were recorded before recanalisation. Clinical outcome was evaluated 90 days after the procedure using the modified Rankin Scale; a score>2 was defined as poor outcome.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore the clinical features of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) linked to coxsackievirus A6 (CVA6) to aid in early diagnosis, analyzing data from over 7,200 patients treated in multiple hospitals from 2013 to 2019.
  • Among patients with clinically diagnosed HFMD, positive detection rates for CVA6, enterovirus 71 (EV-A71), and coxsackievirus A16 (CVA16) were found, with CVA6 being the most prevalent (31.0%).
  • The study revealed that patients with CVA6 had a higher average age at onset, a significantly more common presence of fever (82.

Management of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: Lifestyle changes.

World J Gastroenterol

June 2024

Department of General Surgery, Xi'an Jiaotong University Second Affiliated Hospital, Xi'an 710004, Shaanxi Province, China.

In this editorial, we commented on a recently released manuscript by Zeng in the W. We focused specifically on lifestyle changes in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). NAFLD is a hepatic manifestation of the metabolic syndrome, which ultimately leads to advanced hepatic fibrosis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma and affects more than 25% of the population globally.

Objective: This study aims to explore the common genetic basis between respiratory diseases and to identify shared molecular and biological mechanisms.

Methods: This genome-wide pleiotropic association study uses multiple statistical methods to systematically analyse the shared genetic basis between five respiratory diseases (asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, lung cancer and snoring) using the largest publicly available genome wide association studies summary statistics. The missions of this study are to evaluate global and local genetic correlations, to identify pleiotropic loci, to elucidate biological pathways at the multiomics level and to explore causal relationships between respiratory diseases.

Changes in microcirculation lead to the progression of organ pathology in diabetes. Although neuroimmune interactions contribute to a variety of conditions, it is still unclear whether abnormal neural activities affect microcirculation related to diabetes. Using laser speckle contrast imaging, we examined the skin of patients with type 2 diabetes and found that their microvascular perfusion was significantly compromised.

This study compared the radiologic and clinical outcomes of a new seven-axis robotic-assisted total hip arthroplasty (THA) and conventional THA. Hundred and four patients were randomly assigned to two groups-the robotic-assisted THA group (RAS group) and the conventional THA group (CON group). The preoperative and postoperative Harris Hip score (HHS), acetabular inclination, anteversion, femoral offset, and leg length discrepancy (LLD) were compared.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the genetic links between dietary habits and the average age at menarche (AAM) using genetic data from the UK Biobank and ReproGen Consortium.
  • Researchers found genetic correlations for 29 dietary habits with AAM, demonstrating that certain food choices, like milk type, can influence menarche timing.
  • The Mendelian randomization analysis revealed that 19 dietary habits, such as the type of bread consumed and vegetable intake, are statistically associated with AAM, suggesting that diet may play a significant role in its timing.

Osteosarcoma is a rare cancer affecting disease for children and young adults; complete healing from this condition is quite difficult. Recently, new regeneration materials have been preferred, including natural compound companied implants for affected bone repair, and it is effectively used to treat osteosarcoma disease. Hence, Octa calcium phosphate (OCP) reinforced with poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and oleic acid (OA) with Naringenin (NRG) composite was prepared and studied to cure the sarcoma affected bone.

Peptide ALW (ALWPPNLHAWVP) targeting anti-dsDNA antibodies has shown promising therapeutic effects in alleviating lupus nephritis, but is potentially limited by poor stability and non-kidney targeting. We recently developed a D-form modified ALW, called D-ALW, which has the capacity to widely inhibit pathogenic polyclonal anti-dsDNA antibody reactions. Further modification of D-ALW using PEG-PLGA nanoparticles to enhance good kidney-targeting ability and extend half-life.

Background: In lumbar interbody fusion (LIF), achieving proper fusion status requires osteogenesis to occur in the disc space. Current LIF techniques, including anterior, oblique, lateral, transforaminal, and posterior LIF (A/O/X/T/PLIF), may result in varying osteogenesis outcomes due to differences in biomechanical characteristics.

Methods: A mechano-regulation algorithm was developed to predict the fusion processes of A/O/X/T/PLIF based on finite element modeling and iterative evaluations of the mechanobiological activities of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and their differentiated cells (osteoblasts, chondrocytes, and fibroblasts).

Background: Psoriasis is a prevalent, long-term skin condition characterized by inflammation. Keratinocytes (KCs) are important effector cells that release inflammatory factors and chemokines to promote the inflammatory cascade in psoriasis. However, the mechanisms underlying the activation of KCs in psoriasis remain unclear.

Mast cells (MCs) are primary effector cells involved in immediate allergic reactions. Mas-related G protein-coupled receptor-X2 (MrgX2), which is highly expressed on MCs, is involved in receptor-mediated drug-induced pseudo-anaphylaxis. Many small-molecule drugs and peptides activate MrgX2, resulting in MC activation and allergic reactions.
