February 2023

Section on Molecular Morphogenesis, Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Bethesda, MD, USA.

Background: Animal regeneration is the natural process of replacing or restoring damaged or missing cells, tissues, organs, and even entire body to full function. Studies in mammals have revealed that many organs lose regenerative ability soon after birth when thyroid hormone (T3) level is high. This suggests that T3 play an important role in organ regeneration.

School of Exercise and Health, Shanghai Frontiers Science Research Base of Exercise and Metabolic Health, Shanghai University of Sport, Shanghai, 200438, China.

The metabolic benefits associated with long-term physical activity are well appreciated and growing evidence suggests that it involves the gut microbiota. Here we re-evaluated the link between exercise-induced microbial changes and those associated with prediabetes and diabetes. We found that the relative abundances of substantial amounts of diabetes-associated metagenomic species associated negatively with physical fitness in a Chinese athlete students cohort.

Macrophage elastase derived from adventitial macrophages modulates aortic remodeling.

Front Cell Dev Biol

January 2023

Guangdong Province Key Laboratory, Southern China Institute of Large Animal Models for Biomedicine, School of Biotechnology and Health Sciences, Wuyi University, Jiangmen, China.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is pathologically characterized by intimal atherosclerosis, disruption and attenuation of the elastic media, and adventitial inflammatory infiltrates. Although all these pathological events are possibly involved in the pathogenesis of AAA, the functional roles contributed by adventitial inflammatory macrophages have not been fully documented. Recent studies have revealed that increased expression of matrix metalloproteinase-12 (MMP-12) derived from macrophages may be particularly important in the pathogenesis of both atherosclerosis and AAA.

Peripheral neuropeptide Y (NPY) has been reported to regulate bone metabolism and homeostasis; however, its potential roles in growth plate chondrogenesis remain unclear. Here, we found that NPY expression decreased during chondrocyte differentiation in vitro and in vivo. NPY was required for chondrocyte proliferation; in contrast, knockdown of NPY facilitated chondrocyte hypertrophic differentiation.

Although second-generation therapies like abiraterone (ABI) and enzalutamide (ENZ) benefit patients with castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC), drug resistance frequently occurs, eventually resulting in therapy failure. In this study, we used two libraries, FDA-approved drug library and CRISP/Cas9 knockout (GeCKO) library to screen for drugs that overcome treatment resistance and to identify the potential drug-resistant genes involved in treatment resistance. Our screening results showed that the DNA-damaging agent idarubicin (IDA) overcame abiraterone and enzalutamide resistance in prostate cancer cells.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the impact of short-term air pollution, specifically nitrogen dioxide (NO), on outpatient visits for Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) in Chongqing, China, from 2013 to 2019.
  • Significant positive correlations were found, particularly notable at a lag of 4 days, where a 10 µg/m³ rise in NO led to a 1.57% increase in T2DM visits.
  • The effects were stronger among middle-aged men during cooler months, indicating that these groups face a higher burden from NO exposure related to T2DM.
