Article Synopsis
  • Many doctors overlook the need for spinal cord decompression after correcting atlantoaxial dislocation, prompting the need to evaluate the role of kinematic MRI in these cases.
  • A study involving 36 patients assessed preoperative kinematic MRI results to determine if spinal cord compression (SCC) required decompression or if patients could simply undergo fixation.
  • Results showed significant improvement in spinal function post-surgery for both groups, but decompression is recommended for patients with notable SCC on preoperative kinematic MRI.

The present study aimed to identify key genes involved in osteoarthritis (OA). Based on a bioinformatics analysis of five gene expression profiling datasets (GSE55457, GSE55235, GSE82107, GSE12021 and GSE1919), differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in OA were identified. Subsequently, a protein-protein interaction (PPI) network was constructed and its topological structure was analyzed.

Background: The technique of posterior pedicle screw fixation has already been widely applied in the treatment of upper thoracic spinal tuberculosis. However, lesions of tuberculosis directly invade the vertebrae and surrounding soft tissues, which increases the risk of esophageal perforation induced by the posterior pedicle screw placement. Herein, we report the first case of esophageal perforation following pedicle screw placement in the upper thoracic spinal tuberculosis, and describe the underlying causes, as well as the treatment and prognosis.

Article Synopsis
  • This study looked at how special immune cells called T regulatory cells (Tregs) affect inflammation in the liver of baby mice born early.
  • The researchers injected the mice with a substance called LPS to cause inflammation and observed how Tregs helped control this reaction.
  • They found that Tregs were important for keeping the mother's immune system in check so it doesn't harm the developing baby mouse's liver during inflammation.

May 2021

Lab for Bone Metabolism, Key Lab for Space Biosciences and Biotechnology, School of Life Sciences, Northwestern Polytechnical University, Xi'an, China.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are single-stranded RNA molecules that control gene expression in various processes, such as cancers, Alzheimer's disease, and bone metabolic diseases. However, the regulatory roles of miRNAs in osteoporosis have not been systematically analyzed. Here, we performed a comprehensive analysis to identify the differentially expressed miRNAs involved in osteoporosis.

It is more difficult to develop the low-cost spinal cord injury repair materials with high stability and biocompatibility for the biomedical applications. Herein, for the first time, we demonstrated the functional restoration of an injured spinal cord by the nano CeO particles assembled onto poly (∊-caprolactone) (PCL)/resveratrol (RVL) were synthesized using the biocompatible ionic liquid. The as-prepared biocompatible nanomaterials were characterized and confirmed by using different instruments such as Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy for functional groups identification, X-ray diffraction for crystalline nature, Scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy for morphological structure, Dynamic light scattering for size distribution of the nanoparticles and thermogravimetric analysis for thermal properties.

Background: MiR-183-5p plays an important role in the pathophysiology of many tumors, while the role of MiR-183-5p in liver cancer is unclear.

Methods: In this study, quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and Western blotting were used to detect the expression of miR-183-5p in liver cancer cell lines, liver cancer tissues, and normal tissues adjacent to the cancer, and to explore the mechanism of miR-183-5p regulating liver cancer progression. The in vitro effects of miR-183-5p were evaluated by CCK-8, colony formation test, and wound healing test.

Objective: To evaluate the expression of thymidylate synthase (TS) in myoepithelial cells (MECs) of salivary adenoid tissues and explore its clinical significance.

Methods: Immunohistochemical staining EnVision method was used to detect the expression of TS, P63, Calponin, CK5/6 and S-100 in 32 salivary gland specimens, including 10 non-neoplastic and salivary inflammation specimens, 11 mixed tumor specimens, 5 basal cell carcinoma specimens and 6 adenoid cyst carcinoma specimens. The specificity and sensitivity of TS as a specific molecular marker of salivary muscle epithelial cells were evaluated in comparison with P63, Calponin, CK5/6 and S-100.

July 2020

Department of Spine Surgery, Xi'an Jiaotong University College of Medicine, Honghui Hospital, Xi'an, Shaanxi, China.

Background: Postoperative epidural haematoma and wound infection can cause devastating neurological damage in spinal surgery. Closed drainage is a common method to prevent epidural haematoma, infection and related neurological impairment after lumbar decompression; however, it is not clear whether drainage can reduce postoperative complications and improve clinical efficacy. This randomized study aims to explore the role of closed drainage in reducing postoperative complications and improving the clinical efficacy of single-level lumbar discectomy.
