Background: Macular edema (ME) is a common complication following branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) and is also the main reason for visual impairment. This study aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of intravitreal ranibizumab (IVR) or dexamethasone implant (IDI) monotherapy, as well as the combination of IVR and IDI injections, in patients with ME secondary to branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO).
Methods: This multicenter, prospective, and comparative study included 292 patients with unilateral ME involvement (total of 292 eyes) secondary to BRVO.

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between MMP-2, TIMP-1, β2-MG, hs-CRP and the progression of type 2 diabetic retinopathy (T2DM). For this purpose, 68 patients with T2DM retinopathy treated in our hospital were selected as the retinopathy group (REG), and 68 T2DM patients without retinopathy were selected as the control group (CDG). The serum levels of MMP-2, TIMP-1, β2-MG and hs-CRP were compared between the two groups.

The present study revealed that palmitic acid (PA) treatment induced epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) of retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells, which are involved in the progression of proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR). ARPE-19 cells were treated with PA followed by miRNA screening and EMT marker detection using qRT-PCR. Then, miR-124 mimic or inhibitor was transfected into ARPE-19 cells to explore the role of miR-124 on the EMT of ARPE-19 cells using transwell assay.

Purpose: GPR120 has been reported to ameliorate inflammation in diabetes and diabetic complications. In this study, GW9508, the GPR120 agonist, was utilized in human retinal microvascular endothelial cells (HRMECs) exposed to high glucose (HG) to investigate the involvement of GPR120 in cellular viability and apoptosis as well as the association with the NLRP3 inflammasome.
Methods: The expression of GPR120 in HRMECs cultured under HG was firstly detected by Western blotting.

Aim: To compare the clinical manifestation of cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis and microvascular retinopathy (MVR) in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in China.
Methods: A total of 93 consecutive patients with AIDS, including 41 cases of CMV retinitis and 52 cases of MVR were retrospectively reviewed. Highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) status was recorded.

The expression level and roles of microRNA-497 (miR-497) have been frequently reported in previous studies on cancer. However, its expression, function and associated molecular mechanisms in retinoblastoma remain unknown. In the present study, miR-497 expression levels in human retinoblastoma tissues, normal retinal tissues and retinoblastoma cell lines were determined using reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction.

Purpose: To evaluate efficacy of vitrectomy with internal limiting membrane peel and silicone oil tamponade in highly myopic eyes with retinal detachment secondary to macular hole (MH).
Methods: Twenty-one consecutive cases of MH-retinal detachment in highly myopic eyes were retrospectively reviewed. Eyes underwent pars plana vitrectomy, internal limiting membrane peeling, and silicone oil tamponade.
