Yiyi Fuzi Baijiang Decoction (YFBD), an ancient prescription developed by the ancient Chinese physician, Zhang Zhongjing, has shown remarkable effects in treating ulcerative colitis (UC). However, there are few studies on its mechanism. This study was designed to explore the potential mechanism of YFBD in treating UC.

Osteoblasts primarily mediate bone formation, maintain bone structure, and regulate bone mineralization, which plays an important role in bone remodeling. In the past decades, the roles of cytokines, signaling proteins, and transcription factors in osteoblasts have been widely studied. However, whether the energy metabolism of cells can be regulated by these factors to affect the differentiation and functioning of osteoblasts has not been explored in depth.

Vinegar is a kind of traditional fermented food, there are significant variances in quality and flavor due to differences in raw ingredients and processes. The quality assessment and flavor characteristics of 69 vinegar samples with 5 brewing processes were analyzed by physicochemical parameters combined with flash gas chromatography (GC) e-nose. The evaluation system of quality and the detection method of flavor profile were established.

Environmental exposures interact with genetic factors has been thought to influence susceptibility of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) development. To evaluate the effects of environmental exposures on SLE, we conducted a population-based cohort study across Jiangsu Province, China, to examine the associations between the living environment including air and water pollution, population density, economic income level, etc. and the prevalence and mortality of hospitalized SLE (h-SLE) patients.

Bioactive constituents and the molecular mechanism of Curcumae Rhizoma in the treatment of primary dysmenorrhea based on network pharmacology and molecular docking.

Phytomedicine

June 2021

Department of Pharmacy, Affiliated Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine, Nanjing, 210028, China; Jiangsu Province Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Nanjing, 210028, China. Electronic address:

Background: Curcumae Rhizoma (CR) has a clinical efficacy in activating blood circulation to dissipate blood stasis and has been used for the clinical treatment of qi stagnation and blood stasis (QSBS) primary dysmenorrhea for many years. However, its molecular mechanism is unknown.

Objective: The present study aimed to demonstrate the multicomponent, multitarget and multipathway regulatory molecular mechanisms of CR in the treatment of QSBS primary dysmenorrhea.

Postoperative cognitive dysfunction is a common neurological complication, characterized by impaired learning and memory, that occurs after anesthesia and surgery, especially in elderly patients. The traditional Chinese medicine baicalin is known to have neuroprotective effects. Therefore, we have investigated whether baicalin can improve postoperative cognitive impairment in aged rats after splenectomy.

Objective: To explore the association between the creatinine clearance rate (Ccr) and the prognosis of patients, and compared with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR).

Methods: We retrospectively collected information of patients with SLE who were first hospitalized between 1999 and 2009 in Jiangsu Province, China, and followed up in 2010 and 2015. Ccr was calculated and dichotomized into normal group (Ccr ≥ 70) and decreasing group (Ccr < 70).

Objective: To evaluate the association and dose-response pattern between antimalarial drugs and overall and cause specific mortality in SLE patients.

Methods: Medical records including information on HCQ/chloroquine (CQ) prescription were extracted from Jiangsu Lupus database. The database was designed to collect data from SLE patients that first-hospitalized during 1999-2009 in Jiangsu province, China, and a follow-up for survival status was performed in 2010 and 2015.

Metformin suppresses Nrf2-mediated chemoresistance in hepatocellular carcinoma cells by increasing glycolysis.

Aging (Albany NY)

September 2020

Department of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery, Key Laboratory of Nanobiological Technology of Chinese Ministry of Health, Xiangya Hospital, Central South University, Changsha 410008, Hunan, China.

The diabetes drug metformin has recently been shown to possess anti-cancer properties when used with other chemotherapeutic drugs. However, detailed mechanisms by which metformin improves cancer treatment are poorly understood. Here we provide evidence in HepG2 hepatocellular carcinoma cells that metformin sensitizes cisplatin-resistant HepG2 cells (HepG2/DDP) through increasing cellular glycolysis and suppressing Nrf2-dependent transcription.

Pancreatic cancer (PC) is the most fatal gastrointestinal malignancy in the world, with a 5-year relative survival of only 8%. Poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP)14, a member of the macro-PARP subfamily proteins, has been reported to participate in various biologic and pathologic processes in multiple cancers. The roles and underlying molecular mechanisms of PARP14 in PC carcinogenesis, however, remain to be elucidated.

Anoikis resistance is considered to be an essential prerequisite of tumor metastasis and which is an important mechanism in the metastatic process of gastric cancer (GC). Caveolin-1 (CAV-1), a protein component of caveolae, has been reported to regulate several cancer cell behaviors including anoikis resistance. However, the role of CAV-1 in the acquisition of anoikis resistance in GC cells has never been explored.

Objective: To identify early signs associated with poor prognosis in Chinese patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) through a large population-based follow-up study.

Methods: Medical records of > 2,500 SLE patients that first hospitalized between 1999-2009 were collected from 26 centers across Jiangsu province, China, and entered into a database. These patients were followed-up for 5 to 15 years, and those remained contact and had known survival status in 2015 were assessed for the association of factors presented at the initial hospitalization with mortality at two time points (≤1year and > 1year).

Many studies evaluated the correlations of CD133 expression with the clinical outcomes in patients treated with chemoradiotherapy (CRT) but yielded controversial results. This meta-analysis was performed to identify the impacts of CD133 expression on the prognosis of cancer patients treated with CRT. Electronic databases updated up to March 2014 were searched to find relevant studies.
