Phytobezoar-induced intestinal obstruction is a rare condition caused by previous gastric surgery and consumption of tannin-containing foods. Laparoscopy used to be a common treatment to relieve intestinal obstruction due to phytobezoars. We reported a rare case of phytobezoar-induced intestinal obstruction caused by over-consuming fresh hawthorns, and successfully treated with enteroscopy.

As functional derivatives of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) have garnered significant attention and application in regenerative medicine. However, the technical limitations for large-scale isolation of sEVs and their heterogeneous nature have added complexity to their applications. It remains unclear if the heterogeneous sEVs represent different aspects of MSCs functions.

Thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor antibody (TRAb) is a specific marker for Graves' disease (GD) and the measurement of which can improve the accuracy of GD diagnosis. Current detection methods utilize porcine-derived polyclonal-TRAb, which is unstable and is a source of significant inter-assay variability. This study aims to establish a time-resolved fluorescence immunoassay (TRFIA) method based on stable source of recombinant human TSHR and TRAb for the detection of serum TRAb.

Background: Sepsis is a systemic inflammatory response caused by infection. When this inflammatory response spreads to the lungs, it can lead to acute lung injury (ALI) or more severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Pulmonary fibrosis is a potential complication of these conditions, and the early occurrence of pulmonary fibrosis is associated with a higher mortality rate.

Article Synopsis
  • Novel anthropometric indices, like the lipid accumulation product (LAP) and triglyceride glucose (TyG), show a stronger connection to metabolic issues compared to traditional measurements when assessing hyperuricemia.
  • A large study in the Su-Wuxi-Chang area of China involving 14,834 adults analyzed various body metrics and lifestyle factors to understand their relationship with serum uric acid (SUA) levels.
  • Findings indicate that LAP and TyG are independent risk factors for hyperuricemia in both genders, providing better predictive ability than traditional indices, suggesting these new measures could enhance management strategies for individuals with high SUA levels.

Glioblastoma is a highly aggressive primary brain tumor with glioblastoma stem cells (GSCs) enforcing the intra-tumoral hierarchy. Plasma cells (PCs) are critical effectors of the B-lineage immune system, but their roles in glioblastoma remain largely unexplored. Here, we leverage single-cell RNA and B cell receptor sequencing of tumor-infiltrating B-lineage cells and reveal that PCs are aberrantly enriched in the glioblastoma-infiltrating B-lineage population, experience low level of somatic hypermutation, and are associated with poor prognosis.

A transformer-based deep learning survival prediction model and an explainable XGBoost anti-PD-1/PD-L1 outcome prediction model based on the cGAS-STING-centered pathways in hepatocellular carcinoma.

Brief Bioinform

November 2024

The Affiliated Wuxi People's Hospital of Nanjing Medical University, Wuxi People's Hospital, Wuxi Medical Center, Department of Immunology, School of Basic Medical Sciences, Nanjing Medical University, 101 Longmian Avenue, Nanjing 211166, Jiangsu Province, China.

Recent studies suggest cGAS-STING pathway may play a crucial role in the genesis and development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), closely associated with classical pathways and tumor immunity. We aimed to develop models predicting survival and anti-PD-1/PD-L1 outcomes centered on the cGAS-STING pathway in HCC. We identified classical pathways highly correlated with cGAS-STING pathway and constructed transformer survival model preserving raw structure of pathways.

January 2025

Department of Cardiology, The Affiliated Wuxi People's Hospital of Nanjing Medical University, Wuxi People's Hospital, Wuxi Medical Center Nanjing Medical University, Wuxi 214023, China.

Ischemic heart disease (IHD) remains one of the most prominent causes of mortality and morbidity globally, and the risk of ischemia-reperfusion injury is becoming more severe and constant. This underscores the need to develop new methods to protect the heart from damage. DJ-1 is a multifunctional intracellular protein encoded by the gene that plays roles in processes including the control of autophagy, the preservation of mitochondrial integrity, the prevention of apoptosis, and the elimination of oxidative stress.

Individuals afflicted with heart failure complicated by sepsis often experience a surge in blood glucose levels, a phenomenon known as stress hyperglycemia. However, the correlation between this condition and overall mortality remains unclear. 869 individuals with heart failure complicated by sepsis were identified from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care-IV (MIMIC-IV) database and categorized into five cohorts based on their stress hyperglycemia ratio (SHR).

December 2024

Department of Gynaecology, The Affiliated Wuxi People's Hospital of Nanjing Medical University/Wuxi Medical Center, Nanjing Medical University/Wuxi People's Hospital, 299 Qingyang Road, Wuxi, 214023, Jiangsu, China.

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have emerged as crucial regulators in cancer progression. We found lncRNA DNM1P35 is elevated in ovarian tumors compared to normal tissues, and demonstrated that lncRNA DNM1P35 promoted cancer cell proliferation, migration and invasion in SK-OV-3 and OVCAR-3 cell lines. Furthermore, lncRNA DNM1P35 also facilitated the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) of ovarian cancer cells.

December 2024

The Pq Laboratory of BiomeDx/Rx, Department of Biomedical Engineering, Binghamton University, Binghamton, NY, 13902, USA.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs), submicron-sized membranous structures released by cells, serve as vehicles of tissue-specific proteins and nucleic acids, facilitating intercellular communication and playing roles in pathophysiological processes. Leveraging their unique characteristics, EVs have emerged as promising drug delivery nanocarriers. Electroporation (EP) and ultrasonication (US) are among the prevalent techniques used for loading exogenous drugs into EVs owing to their simplicity and efficiency.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on the link between central obesity, measured by a new index called the weight-adjusted-waist index (WWI), and breast cancer (BC) among American women.
  • Data from 10,193 participants was analyzed, revealing that WWI was a more reliable indicator of breast cancer risk compared to traditional measures like waist circumference or BMI, showing a significant association with BC.
  • The findings indicated that higher WWI levels corresponded with a 62% increased probability of developing breast cancer, highlighting the necessity to understand this relationship further, especially considering its nonlinear aspects.
