Lupus nephritis (LN) constitutes a substantial contributor to morbidity and mortality in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The monitoring of renal function in patients with LN is associated with improved prognostication. The objective of this study was to evaluate the clinical utility of serum galectin-3 (Gal-3) levels in differentiating LN from SLE.

RPF2 plays a crucial role in promoting epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and regulating metastasis in colorectal cancer (CRC). By analyzing data from the TCGA and GEO databases, we observed significantly elevated RPF2 expression in CRC, which correlated with EMT markers. Further investigations using stable RPF2 overexpression and knockdown cell lines demonstrated that RPF2 facilitates EMT activation through the AKT/GSK-3β signaling pathway.

Background: Complications and mortality rates following gastrectomy for gastric cancer have improved over recent years; however, complications such as anastomotic leakage (AL) continue to significantly impact both immediate and long-term prognoses. This study aimed to develop a machine learning model to identify preoperative and intraoperative high-risk factors and predict mortality in patients with AL after radical gastrectomy.

Methods: For this investigation, 906 patients diagnosed with gastric cancer were enrolled and evaluated, with a comprehensive set of 36 feature variables collected.

Vav family exchange factors: Potential regulator in atherosclerosis.

Biochem Biophys Rep

December 2024

Department of Internal Medicine, Wuxi Maternity and Child Health Care Hospital, Affiliated Women's Hospital of Jiangnan University, Wuxi, 214002, China.

The Vav family of guanosine nucleotide exchange factors (GEFs) regulates the phosphorylation of tyrosinase, influencing various physiological and pathological processes by modulating the binding of Rho GTPases to GDP/GTP. Recent research has highlighted the critical role of Vav family activation in tumorigenesis, neurological disorders, immune-related dysfunctions, and other diseases. This review offers a comprehensive overview of the structure and function of Vav proteins and their significant impact on the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis.

Background: This study aimed to investigate the risk factors for urinary tract infections (UTIs) in patients with cervical cancer (CC) following radical surgery, and analyse the etiological distribution and prognostic implications of these infections.

Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on the clinical data of 168 patients with CC who underwent radical surgery at our hospital between January 2021 and December 2023. Postoperative UTI incidence and associated risk factors were analysed.

Recurrence is of utmost importance for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after ultrasound-guided microwave ablation (UGMWA) therapy. The fibrosis 4 (FIB-4) index is a valuable predictor of HCC recurrence after surgical resection. However, whether FIB-4 can predict the recurrence of HCC patients receiving UGMWA remains unclear.

Recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after ultrasound-guided microwave ablation (UGMWA) was a critical issue. Therefore, it is significant to identify the role of hypoxia-inducible factor 1 α (HIF-1α), insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and IGF binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3) in recurrence. HCC patients receiving UGMWA were divided into recurrence and no-recurrence groups.

Background: Rapid On-Site Evaluation (ROSE) has been widely used in clinical applications. However, in the field of lung transplantation, there have been no comparative experiments to confirm and quantify its effectiveness. To this end, ROSE was used to detect donor lung infection or colonization and analyze its influence on the prognosis of lung transplantation.

SPP1 induces idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and NSCLC progression via the PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway.

Respir Res

October 2024

Department of lung transplantation, The Second Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine, Hangzhou, Zhejiang, 310009, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the relationship between secreted phosphoprotein 1 (SPP1), idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), noting that SPP1 is overexpressed in both conditions.
  • Researchers found that SPP1 contributes to the proliferation of IPF fibroblasts and influences the progression of NSCLC by activating key cellular pathways.
  • Overall, the results indicate that SPP1 may play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of IPF and NSCLC, suggesting it could be a potential target for therapeutic interventions.

The incidence and mortality of digestive system-related cancers have always been high and attributed to the heterogeneity and complexity of the immune microenvironment of the digestive system. Furthermore, several studies have shown that chronic inflammation in the digestive system is responsible for cancer incidence; therefore, controlling inflammation is a potential strategy to stop the development of cancer. Innate Lymphoid Cells (ILC) represent a heterogeneous group of lymphocytes that exist in contrast to T cells.

SMAD4 promotes EMT in COPD airway remodeling induced by cigarette smoke through interaction with O-GlcNAc transferase.

Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, The Affiliated Wuxi People's Hospital of Nanjing Medical University, Wuxi People's Hospital, Wuxi Medical Center, Nanjing Medical University, Wuxi, Jiangsu 214023, PR China. Electronic address:

Cigarette smoke (CS) is a prevalent chemical indoor air contaminant known to be the primary cause of EMT during airway remodeling in COPD. While some evidence indicates the involvement of SMAD4 in EMT across certain diseases, its specific role in CS-induced EMT in airway remodeling associated with COPD is not established. In our research, we observed a substantial upregulation in SMAD4 expression, O-GlcNAcylation and EMT in patients with COPD, as well as in vitro and in vivo COPD models induced by CS, than those of the controls.

BTB and CNC homology 1 (BACH1) plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of acute lung injury (ALI) caused by gram-negative bacteria. However, its exact mechanisms and roles in Staphylococcus aureus (SA)-induced ALI, a gram-positive bacterial infection, remain incompletely understood. In this study, we generated a BACH1-knockout mouse model (BACH1-/-) to investigate the role of BACH1 and its underlying mechanisms in regulating the development of sepsis-induced acute lung injury (ALI).

May 2024

The Anhui Provincial Key Laboratory of Biodiversity Conservation and Ecological Security in the Yangtze River Basin, College of Life Sciences, Anhui Normal University, Wuhu 241000, China.

The sex chromosomes of skinks are usually poorly differentiated and hardly distinguished by cytogenetic methods. Therefore, identifying sex chromosomes in species lacking easily recognizable heteromorphic sex chromosomes is necessary to fully understand sex chromosome diversity. In this paper, we employed cytogenetics, sex quantification of genes, and transcriptomic approaches to characterize the sex chromosomes in .
