Cortex Fraxini is a traditional Chinese herb that is widely available, inexpensive, and has low toxicity. Modern pharmacological studies have demonstrated that the active metabolites in Cortex Fraxini, including esculin, esculetin, and fraxetin, exert anti-tumor activities by regulating genes and proteins involved in cancer cell proliferation, apoptosis, invasion, and migration. Additionally, these metabolites play a pivotal role in the regulation of several tumor-associated signaling pathways, including the PI3K/Akt, MAPK/ERK, JAK/STAT3, and Wnt/β-catenin pathways.

Nicotine dependence is an important cause of excessive exposure to tobacco combustion compounds in most smokers. Nicotine replacement therapy is the main method to treat nicotine dependence, but it still has its shortcomings, such as the inability to mitigate withdrawal effects and limited applicability. It has been hypothesized that a combination of low-dose nicotine and caffeine could achieve the same psychological stimulation effect as a high dose of nicotine without causing nicotine withdrawal effects.

Background: Gastroparesis is a major complication following complete mesocolic excision (CME) and significantly impacts patient outcomes. This study aimed to create a machine learning model to pinpoint key risk factors before, during, and after surgery, effectively predicting the risk of gastroparesis after CME.
Methods: The study involved 1146 patients with colon cancer, out of which 95 developed gastroparesis.

Background: The diagnosis of major depressive disorder (MDD) mainly depends on subjective clinical symptoms, without an acceptable objective biomarker for the clinical application of MDD. Inter-alpha-trypsin inhibitor heavy chain 4 (ITIH4) showed a high specificity as biomarker for the diagnosis and treatment of MDD. The present study aimed to investigate differences in plasma ITIH4 in two different aged MDD patients and underlying pathological mechanisms of plasma ITIH4 in the occurrence and development of MDD.

Alternative splicing (AS) plays a crucial role in the hallmarks of cancer and can open new avenues for targeted therapies. However, the aberrant AS events and the metastatic cascade in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) remain largely unclear. Here, we identify the splicing factor, quaking protein (QKI), which was significantly downregulated in PTC and correlated with poor survival outcomes in patients with PTC.

Background: Stress hyperglycemia is now more common in intensive care unit (ICU) patients and is strongly associated with poor prognosis. Whether this association exists in critically ill patients with cardiogenic shock (CS) is unknown. This study investigated the prognostic relationship of stress hyperglycemia on critically ill patients with CS.

The emergence of such bone metastases typically heralds a significantly poor prognosis for the patient. This study's primary aim is to develop a machine learning model to identify patients at elevated risk of bone metastasis among those with right-sided colon cancer undergoing complete mesocolonectomy (CME).

Family history (FH) of cancer and polygenic risk scores (PRS) are pivotal for cancer risk assessment, yet their combined impact remains unclear. Participants in the UK Biobank (UKB) were recruited between 2006 and 2010, with complete follow-up data updated until February 2020 for Scotland and January 2021 for England and Wales. Using UKB data (N = 442,399), we constructed PRS and incidence-weighted overall cancer PRS (CPRS).

Proliferation and transdifferentiation of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) are hallmarks of proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR); however, the critical regulators of this process remain to be elucidated. Here, we investigated the role of tenascin-C in PVR development. In vitro, exposure of human ARPE-19 (hRPE) cells to TGF-β2 increased tenascin-C expression.

Background: Ischemic stroke (IS) is a severe neurological disorder with a pathogenesis that remains incompletely understood. Recently, a novel form of cell death known as disulfidptosis has garnered significant attention in the field of ischemic stroke research. This study aims to investigate the mechanistic roles of disulfidptosis-related genes (DRGs) in the context of IS and to examine their correlation with immunopathological features.

Objective: To explore the risk factors for pulmonary bacterial infection (PBI) after lung transplantation (LTX) and to evaluate the impact of PBI on short-term postoperative mortality.
Methods: We retrospectively analyzed data on 549 recipients who underwent LTX at the Affiliated Wuxi People's Hospital of Nanjing Medical University, China, between January 2018 and December 2021. The risk factors for PBI after LTX were explored by univariate analysis and multivariate logistic regression.

Although emerging evidence on the association between per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) and neurodevelopment have been investigated, there is no consensus on the effect of maternal PFASs on neurodevelopment in offspring. Here, we assessed the risk of maternal PFASs exposure on the neurodevelopment of offspring using a novel Targeted Risk Assessment of Environmental Chemicals (TRAEC) strategy based on multiple evidence. The evidence from five online databases were analyzed the effect of PFASs on neurodevelopment.
