Low-dose CT (LDCT) is increasingly recognized as the preferred method for detecting pulmonary nodules. However, distinguishing whether a nodule is benign or malignant often necessitates repeated scans or invasive tissue sampling procedures. Therefore, there is a pressing need for non-invasive techniques to minimize unnecessary interventions.

Background: This study evaluates the clinical effectiveness of employing direct retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) laser photocoagulation as a technique for achieving chorioretinal adhesion to effectively seal retinal breaks.
Methods: A total of 20 eyes from 20 patients were enrolled in the study; all selected eyes exhibited either rhegmatogenous or combined rhegmatogenous-tractional retinal detachment. During vitrectomy, direct RPE laser photocoagulation was executed, employing a power range of 100-150 mW and a duration of 120-200 ms, targeting the peripheries where the edges of each retinal break were anticipated to settle post-reattachment.

Objective: To investigate the role of exosomal miRNAs from synovial fluid (SF) in osteoarthritis (OA) patients and investigate the underlying molecular mechanism.
Methods: Degenerated knee tissues were collected from male and female OA patients. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to detect the differences in the expression of inflammatory indicators, including TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-10, between the degenerative and injury groups.

This study aims to analyze the use of ambulatory assistive devices (AAD) in relation to balance-associated tests and assist medical staff in providing professional objective reference values for older adults on whether to use AAD. Older adults ( = 228) were recruited from the local community to participate in this study. Participants were divided into the AAD-use group and the non-AAD-use group.

Background: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by symptoms such as itchiness, scaling, and erythema. Previous studies have suggested that inflammatory indicators obtained from peripheral blood cell count can serve as markers for atopic dermatitis pruritus and severity. The objective of this study was to investigate whether these indicators are associated with treatment efficacy in AD patients who received a combination of halomethasone cream and Simiao pill (SMP).

Targeted delivery of small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) with low immunogenicity and fewer undesirable side effects are needed for spinal cord injury (SCI) therapy. Here, we show that RGD (Arg-Gly-Asp) peptide-decorated CD163 macrophage-derived sEVs can deliver TGF-β to the neovascular endothelial cells of the injured site and improve neurological function after SCI. CD163 macrophages are M2 macrophages that express TGF-β and are reported to promote angiogenesis and vascular stabilization in various diseases.

Macrophages polarized to the M2 subtype after spinal cord injury (SCI) are beneficial for promoting neurological recovery. The crosstalk between endothelial cells (ECs) and macrophages is crucial for the imbalance between proinflammatory and pro-resolving responses caused by macrophage heterogeneity; however, this crosstalk is strengthened post-SCI, leading to inflammatory cascades and second damage. As a powerful means to regulate gene expression, epigenetic regulation of the interaction between immune cells and ECs in SCI is still largely unknown.

Objective: To investigate the effect of dexmedetomidine (Dex)-assisted ultrasound-guided lower extremity nerve block on elderly patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA).
Methods: This retrospective study analyzed data of 60 elderly patients treated with unilateral artificial THA from January 2021 to February 2022. Among them, 30 patients anesthetized using Dex-assisted ultrasound-guided lower extremity nerve block were regarded as the research group (RG), and 30 patients anesthetized with the use of subarachnoid block were considered as the control group (CG).

Background: The average life expectancy of older people is increasing, and most seniors desire to age at home and are capable of living independently. Occupational therapy (OT) is client-centered and uses patients' meaningful activities, or occupations, as treatment methods, thus playing an important role in later adulthood. Telemedicine removes the constraints of time and space, and the combination of OT and telemedicine can greatly improve medical efficiency and clinical effectiveness.

Background: This study aimed to investigate the effect of microRNA 146a (miR-146a) overexpressed bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMMSCs) exosomes on spinal cord injury (SCI) recovery.
Methods: Rat BMMSCs were isolated and transfected with miR-146a mimic (miR-mimic) and control mimic (NC-mimic), after which their exosomes were isolated. Afterward, SCI rat models were constructed, then treated with phosphate buffer saline (PBS), NC BMMSCs exosomes (separated from the culture medium of BMMSCs with NC-mimic), and miR-146a overexpressed BMMSCs exosomes (isolated from the culture medium of BMMSCs with miR-mimic), respectively; additionally, rats underwent sham surgery were treated with PBS as controls.

Background: Hemorrhage shock (HS) is characterized by decreased tissue oxygenation and organ damage due to severe blood loss. Protein tyrosine phosphatase receptor type O (PTPRO) is abnormally up-regulated in the rat lungs after trauma/HS.
Methods: To elucidate the regulatory mechanism of PTPRO in lung inflammation following HS, we established a rat model of HS via withdrawing blood by a catheter inserted into the femoral artery followed by resuscitation.

Background: China has the largest number of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in the world. However, owing to insufficient knowledge of self-management in patients with diabetes, blood glucose (BG) control is poor. Most diabetes-related self-management applications fail to bring significant benefits to patients with T2DM because of the low use rate and difficult operation.

Glycosylphosphatidylinositol-anchored micronemal antigen (GAMA) is an erythrocyte binding protein known to be involved in malarial parasite invasion. Although anti-GAMA antibodies have been shown to block GAMA attachment to the erythrocyte surface and subsequently inhibit parasite invasion, little is known about the molecular mechanisms by which GAMA promotes the invasion process. In this study, LC-MS analysis was performed on the erythrocyte membrane to identify the specific receptor that interacts with GAMA.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the linkage of long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) expression profile with etanercept response in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients.
Methods: Peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) samples were collected from 80 RA patients prior to etanercept treatment. Samples from eight responders and eight non-responders at week 24 (W24) were proposed to RNA-sequencing, then 10 candidate lncRNAs were sorted and their PBMC expressions were validated by reverse transcription quantitative chain reaction (RT-qPCR) in 80 RA patients.

The pathogenesis of intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD) is complex and remains unclear. Nucleus pulposus stem cells (NPSCs) and annulus fibrosus cells (AFCs) play a critical role in the maintenance of intervertebral disc structure and function. Exosome-mediated miRNAs regulate cell proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, and degradation.

Hemorrhage shock (HS) is a major threat to patients with trauma and spontaneous bleeding, resulting in multi-organ failure including the kidney. Tyrosine kinase nonreceptor 1 (TNK1) has been shown to be upregulated in the kidney of experimental HS and patients with severe trauma The study aims to investigate the role of TNK1 and the underlying mechanism in HS-induced kidney injury. A model of HS was established with femoral artery bloodletting, followed by resuscitation in Sprague-Dawley rats.

Background: Astrocyte over-activation and extensive neuron loss are the main characteristic pathological features of spinal cord ischemia-reperfusion injury (SCII). Prior studies have placed substantial emphasis on the role of heat shock protein family A member 8 (HSPA8) on postischemic myocardial inflammation and cardiac dysfunction. However, it has never been determined whether HSPA8 participates in astrocyte activation and thus mediated neuroinflammation associated with SCII.
