This study explored the relationship between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in cytokines with the combined effect of polymorphisms and gender-polymorphisms interaction and LC risk.

Methods: In this study, a case-control design was used, samples were selected from 45 patients with hepatitis B-related cirrhosis and 45 age-gender-matched chronic HBV-infected patients without cirrhosis attending the tumor hospital of Wuwei Academy of Medical Sciences.

Surveillance recommendations for gastric cancer (GC) in current guidelines focused on advanced precancerous lesions and were based on precise diagnosis of severity/extent of baseline lesions. We aimed to develop a less endoscopy-related equipment-dependent risk-stratification tool, and assessed whether mild-precursor-lesion patients can be safely exempt from surveillance. In the multicenter community-based cohort, 75,051 participants receiving baseline endoscopy were enrolled during 2015-2017 and followed-up until 2021.

Personalized starting age of gastric cancer screening based on individuals' risk profiles: a population-based, prospective study.

J Natl Cancer Inst

November 2024

Office of Cancer Screening, National Cancer Center/National Clinical Research Center for Cancer/Cancer Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College, Beijing, China.

Background: The current recommended starting age for gastric cancer screening lacks unified guideline and individualized criteria. We aimed to determine the risk-stratified starting age for gastric cancer screening in China based on individuals' risk profiles and to develop an online calculator for clinical application.

Methods: In this multicenter, population-based, prospective study, we allocated participants enrolled between 2015 and 2017 (N = 59 771, aged 40-69 years) to screened and unscreened groups and observed them for primary endpoints: gastric cancer occurrence as well as all-cause and gastric cancer-specific death.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) combined with chemotherapeutic agents for the treatment of colorectal cancer (CRC) are a promising therapeutic strategy. NSAIDs can effectively boost the antitumor efficacy of chemotherapeutic agents by inhibiting the synthesis of COX-2. However, hazardous side effects and barriers to oral drug absorption are the main challenges for combination therapy with chemotherapeutics and NSAIDs.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs), crucial in facilitating the transport of diverse molecular cargoes for intercellular communication, have shown great potential in diagnostics, therapeutics, and drug delivery. The challenge of developing effective preparation methods for EVs is heightened by their intrinsic heterogeneity and complexity. Here, a novel strategy for high EV enrichment is developed by utilizing EV-affinitive-modified cellulose nanofibrils.

The Alhagi honey polysaccharide (AHP) exhibits notable anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory properties, positioning it as a promising candidate in traditional Chinese medicine. In this investigation, we successfully isolated and purified a neutral AHP, designated AHPN50-1a, subsequently elucidating its structural attributes. AHPN50-1a was found to have a molecular weight of 1.

Hypercholesterolemia is a significant risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Successful management of cholesterol metabolism disorders can prevent these ASCVD effectively. Asialoglycoprotein receptor 1 (ASGR1) is the main subtype of sialoglycoprotein receptor, which is specifically expressed in the liver and mediates the endocytosis of blood asialoglycoprotein to lysosome degradation.

The study of virtual source position with the geometric convergent ratio errors prevention management method of spot scanning beam in carbon ion therapy.

Radiat Prot Dosimetry

August 2023

Heavy Ion Center of Wuwei Cancer Hospital, Gansu Wuwei Academy of Medical Sciences, Gansu Wuwei Tumor Hospital, Wuwei City, Gansu Province, China.

Introduction: We developed a technique including preventing errors management method capable of dealing with the virtual source position delivered by different carbon ion energies from the pattern of spot scanning beam in this study.

Materials And Methods: A homemade large-format complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) sensor and Gaf Chromic EBT3 films were used for the virtual source position measurement. The Gaf films were embedded in a self-designed rectangular plastic frame to tighten the films and set up on a treatment couch for irradiation in the air with the film perpendicular to the carbon ion beam at the nominal source-axis-distance (SAD) as well as upstream and downstream from the SAD.

Gastric cancer-associated long non-coding RNA profiling and noninvasive biomarker screening based on a high-risk population cohort.

Cancer Med

June 2023

Key Laboratory of Carcinogenesis and Translational Research (Ministry of Education/Beijing), Department of Cancer Epidemiology, Peking University School of Oncology, Peking University Cancer Hospital & Institute, Beijing, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to identify noninvasive biomarkers for gastric cancer (GC) using long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) microarray analysis in high-risk populations.
  • A total of 1206 differential lncRNAs were found, with 470 upregulated and 736 downregulated in GC cases compared to controls, highlighting significant candidates for further validation.
  • Among these, RP11-244 K5.6 was particularly noteworthy, showing an increased risk for GC in individuals with higher expression levels, suggesting its potential as a biomarker for early detection.

Article Synopsis
  • A new diagnostic test is urgently needed for patients co-infected with HIV and tuberculosis (TB), and m6A-related long non-coding RNAs from blood may provide a solution.
  • In a study analyzing RNA-Seq data, five significant m6A-related lncRNAs were identified that could effectively distinguish between HIV/TB co-infected patients and those with only HIV.
  • A deep learning model using these lncRNAs achieved high accuracy (92.0%) and sensitivity (92.9%) in diagnosing co-infection, demonstrating promising potential for clinical application.

Article Synopsis
  • Different stages of gastric adenocarcinoma (GAC) development have unique sets of risk factors, highlighting the complexity of cancer progression.
  • Age, occupation (especially farming), low income, infection, alcohol consumption, hot food consumption, and previous gastritis or peptic ulcer history are linked to chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG) development.
  • Progression from low-grade dysplasia (LGD) to GAC is influenced by age, male gender, and history of polyps, suggesting that targeting these risk factors earlier could help reduce GAC incidence.

The co-occurrence of multiple primary cancers with hematological malignancies is uncommon, and acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) with MPC is even rarer, with only a few cases reported in the literature. Herein, we introduce the diagnosis and treatment of 2 cases of MPC complicated with APL in our hospital and review the relevant literature. Both patients were primary solid tumor patients and were treated with surgery and chemotherapy, and had stable disease (SD).

Improved diagnostic tests for tuberculosis (TB) among people with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are urgently required. We hypothesized that methylation-driven genes (MDGs) of host blood could be used to diagnose patients co-infected with HIV/TB. In this study, we identified three MDGs among patients with HIV monoinfection and those with HIV/TB co-infection using the R package MethylMix.
