General Practice Center & Emergency Department, Institute of Hematology & Blood Diseases Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences & Peking Union Medical College, Tianjin, 300000, China; General Medicine Department, Tianjin Medical University General Hospital, Tianjin, 300052, China. Electronic address:

Objective: While high concentrations of toluene are known to affect multiple human organ systems, research concerning the influence of immediate, short-term exposure to toluene indoors and at low concentrations is scarce. Here, we studied effects of indoor toluene exposure on neural network alterations during working memory (WM) encoding.

Methods: A total of 23 healthy college students were recruited.

Working memory-related alterations in neural oscillations reveal the influence of in-vehicle toluene on cognition at low concentration.

Environ Sci Pollut Res Int

February 2023

Key Laboratory of Post-Neuroinjury Neuro-Repair and Regeneration in Central Nervous System, Ministry of Education and Tianjin City, Tianjin Neurological Institute, Tianjin, 300052, China.

Although toluene is a typical in-vehicle pollutant, the impacts of in-vehicle toluene exposure on cognitive functions remain unestablished. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of short-term toluene exposure in vehicles on working memory based on neural oscillations. In total, 24 healthy adults were recruited.

Background: This study aimed to explore the association of the presence and number of components of metabolic syndrome (MetS) with carotid atherosclerosis by measuring the presence of carotid plaque and total plaque area (TPA) in a population from a low-income area with high incidence of stroke of northern China.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in a rural area of Tianjin, China from April 2014 to January 2015. The presence of plaque and TPA measurement was determined by carotid ultrasound.

Despite accumulative literature reporting negative impacts of high-concentration toluene, cognitive effects of toluene at low concentration are still unclear. Twenty-two healthy college students were exposed in a closed environmental chamber to investigate the influence of indoor toluene on cognitive performance and brain activity. During each toluene exposure condition (0 ppb, 17.

Obesity is a potentially modifiable risk factor for cognitive impairment. However, sex-specific relationships between obesity and cognitive impairment in late life remain unclear. We aimed to assess sex differences in the association between various obesity parameters and cognitive impairment in a low-income elderly population in rural China.

Use of ulinastatin was associated with reduced mortality in critically ill patients with sepsis.

J Thorac Dis

May 2019

Department of Critical Care Medicine, Wuhu No. 2 People's Hospital, Wannan Medical College, Wuhu 241000, China.

Background: Ulinastatin has anti-inflammatory properties and could potentially benefit critically ill septic patients. Nevertheless, clinical studies have yielded conflicting results. The present study examined the efficacy of ulinastatin in intensive care unit (ICU) patients with sepsis and/or septic shock.

Ailanthone, which is extracted from the traditional Chinese medicinal plant , has been thoroughly demonstrated to have anti-tumor, anti-HIV, anti-inflammatory, anti-malarial, anti-allergic and anti-microbial activities. However, the anti-proliferative effects of ailanthone on HL-60 cells and potential mechanisms underlying those effects have not been reported. In the present study, we demonstrated the potent cytotoxicity of ailanthone against HL-60 cells.

Netrin-1 is a laminin-related protein found to promote proliferation and invasion in multiple types of cancers. Recent studies have identified the function role of netrin-1 in several cancers; however, the influence of netrin-1 in human gastric cancer(GC) remains largely unknown. In this study, we found netrin-1 was upregulated in human GC tissues, where its expression correlated inversely with cancer stage and lymph node metastasis.

A large family with inherited optic disc anomalies: a correlation between a new genetic locus and complex ocular phenotypes.

Sci Rep

August 2017

Department of Ophthalmology, The First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University and State Key Laboratory of Reproductive Medicine, Nanjing Medical University, Nanjing, 210029, China.

Congenital cavitary optic disc anomalies (CODA) is clinically typified by an enlarged excavation of optic disc in diverse degrees. Here, we report the clinical and genetic findings in a four-generation Chinese family with a complicated form of autosomal dominant CODA. Cardinal manifestations included bilateral excavated optic disc with multiple cilioretinal vessels emerging and bilateral retinoschisis with great variability in the range of extension and severity.

Cinobufagin (CBF) is an active ingredient isolated from Venenum Bufonis extracted and dried from the secretory glands of Bufo gargarizans Cantor. The purpose of the study was to investigate the effects and underlying mechanisms of CBF on human breast cancer MCF-7 cells in vitro. Our results showed that CBF exhibited obvious cytotoxicity on MCF-7 cells in a dose- and time-dependent manner, as indicated by CCK-8 assays.

Type 1 diabetes mellitus is heterogeneous in many facets. The patients suffered from type 1 diabetes present several levels of islet function as well as variable number and type of islet-specific autoantibodies. This study was to investigate prevalence and heterogeneity of the islet autoantibodies and clinical phenotypes of type 1 diabetes mellitus; and also discussed the process of islet failure and its risk factors in Chinese type 1 diabetic patients.

Background: Data on long-term trends in the prevalence and clustering of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors among women in China are rare, especially among low-income women. The aim of this study was to investigate the secular trends in the prevalence of CVD risk factors among low-income women in northern China.

Materials And Methods: The prevalence and clustering of CVD risk factors, including hypertension, diabetes, obesity, current smoking status, and alcohol consumption, were assessed and compared in women aged 35-74 years in northern China in 1991 and 2011.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs that participate in several cellular functions and tumour progression. A previous microarray study demonstrated that miR-135b is downregulated in prostate cancer (PCa) cells, but the role and molecular mechanism of miR-135b in the regulation of tumour metastasis remain to be elucidated. In the present study, significant downregulation of miR-135b in PCa tissues, compared with noncancerous tissues, was detected by reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction.

Improved detection of deeply invasive candidiasis with DNA aptamers specific binding to (1→3)-β-D-glucans from Candida albicans.

Eur J Clin Microbiol Infect Dis

April 2016

Department of Immunology, Wuhan University School of Basic Medical Sciences, No. 185 Donghu Road, Wuchang District, Wuhan, 430071, People's Republic of China.

Deeply invasive or disseminated candidiasis is a serious and often fatal complication that can occur frequently in immuno-compromised individuals. However, conventional diagnostic methods of Candida albicans display low sensitivity and lack of specificity; the development of rapid and accurate detection methods remains a high priority. Aptamers are single-strand DNA or RNA oligonucleotides that specifically bind to target molecules with high affinity.

Purpose: Although existing evidence from clinical trials has demonstrated manifestation of gastrointestinal perforation with the use of ramucirumab, overall risks have yet to be reported. Therefore, we performed a meta-analysis of published randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to get a better understanding of the overall incidence and risk of gastrointestinal perforation associated with ramucirumab.

Methods: The PubMed and Web of Science databases as well as abstracts presented at American Society of Clinical Oncology conferences were searched to identify relevant studies published up to 01 May 2015.
