Article Synopsis
  • Deep eutectic solvents (DES) were made using acrylic acid and acrylamide as donors and choline chloride as a receptor, forming composite hydrogels with nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (N-CNTs).
  • The mechanical properties, pH response, and conductivity of the resulting N-CNTs/P(AA--AM) hydrogels were significantly enhanced with more N-CNTs, achieving impressive tensile and compressive strengths.
  • The hydrogels displayed strong pH responsiveness and conductivity, with a notable increase in electrical conductivity when N-CNTs were added, enabling use in applications like lighting.

A deep eutectic solvent (DES) was synthesized from urea (U), acrylamide (AM), and choline chloride (ChCl). ZnO was dispersed in the DES as a filler, and nanocomposite hydrogels (ZnO/P(U-AM-ChCl)) were successfully prepared by frontal polymerization (FP). The hydrogels were verified by Fourier infrared spectroscopy to contain ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs).

Article Synopsis
  • A new eco-friendly method was developed for creating nanocomposite hydrogels using frontal polymerization in about 4 minutes, which resulted in materials with great mechanical strength and pH responsiveness.
  • The method involves using acrylamide (AM) and choline chloride (ChCl) to produce deep eutectic monomers (DEMs), which are combined with nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (N-CNTs) as fillers.
  • Tests confirmed that the PAM/N-CNT hydrogels exhibited improved compressive strength and sensitivity to pH changes, particularly in acidic conditions, due to the interactions between the hydrogels and the N-CNTs.

ZnO and g-CN provide excellent photocatalytic properties for degradation of antibiotics in pharmaceutical wastewater. In this work, 2D-2D ZnO/N doped g-CN (NCN) composite photocatalysts were prepared for degradation of tetracycline (TC), ciprofloxacin (CIP) and ofloxacin (OFLX). The addition of ZnO resulted in higher separation efficiency and lower recombination rate of photogenerated charge under visible light.

Heat-not-burn tobacco with an external heating source is a cleaner alternative to conventional cigarettes due to its lower emission of nicotine, CO and tar in the smoke, and the co-combustion of the composite carbon source (chrysanthemum biochar blended with graphite carbon) is a promising carbon heating source for a heat-not-burn tobacco product. This work has investigated the effect of the blending ratio of the graphite carbon on the co-combustion characteristics (, the minimum ignition temperature, the burnout temperature, ) of the composite carbon source, as well as the effect of KCO on the co-combustion behaviors. The results indicate that the minimum ignition temperature is mainly controlled by the ignition of the biochar while the burnout temperature is dominated by that of the graphite.

Polysaccharides are good chelating agents for metal ions, which are often used to synthesize polysaccharide metal ion complexes. With carboxymethyl (CMP) as the substrate, carboxymethyl iron (CMPF), carboxymethyl selenium (CMPS), and carboxymethyl zinc (CMPZ) were synthesized by response surface methodology, and their biological characteristics were studied. The results showed that the CMP was a β-polysaccharide, and the degree of carboxymethylation was 0.

Novel aluminum vanadate as a cathode material for high-performance aqueous zinc-ion batteries.

Nanotechnology

May 2021

Hubei Provincial Key Laboratory of Green Materials for Light Industry, Collaborative Innovation Center of Green Light-Weight Materials and Processing, School of Materials and Chemical Engineering Hubei University of Technology Wuhan 430068, People's Republic of China.

Rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) have garnered widespread attention as a new large-scale energy storage candidate owing to their low cost and high theoretical capacity. Because of the unique divalent state of Znand the existence of a strong electrostatic repulsion phenomenon, researchers are currently focusing on how to prepare high-performance cathode materials. In this study, we synthesized aluminum vanadate (AlVO) as a cathode material for AZIBs using a solvothermal method.

"Heat-not-burn" tobacco with an external heating source is a cleaner alternative to conventional cigarettes due to its lower emission of nicotine, CO and tar in the smoke, and graphite is a promising carbon heating source for a "heat-not-burn" tobacco product yet is not easy to be fired. This work aims to improve the combustion properties of graphite using potassium catalysts. Thermal gravimetric analysis is performed to investigate the combustion properties, and a first-order kinetic model is applied to describe the combustion process.

Selenium-enriched peptides from (CSP) have excellent antioxidant functions but little is known about their effects on obesity and associated metabolic disorders in mice fed with a high-fat diet (HFD). In this study, C57BL/6 mice were fed a HFD with or without CSP supplementation (CSPL: 26 μg Se per kg bw per d; CSPH: 104 μg per kg bw per d) for 10 weeks. The results showed that both CSPL and CSPH could ameliorate overweight gain, excess fat accumulation, serum lipid metabolism, and insulin resistance.

In this paper, rice husk (RH) was used as raw material to prepare white carbon black, and the key technological parameters of preparing white carbon black from RH were studied through single-factor test, orthogonal experiment, and response surface analysis. Meanwhile, the characteristic of white carbon black was also analyzed. Through orthogonal experiment analysis, it was confirmed that the order of factors affecting the purity of white carbon black was calcination temperature > alkali treatment time > final pH > surfactant.

The effects of storage condition on the physicochemical characteristics of sunflower seed oil (SSO) were investigated, to understand the required conditions and the typical indicators for its quality control. The changes of SSO in peroxide value (PV), acid value (AV), fatty acid (FA) composition, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrum and volatile compound (VC) during 11 month storage under seven different conditions, were analyzed. The PVs and AVs of the seven groups all increased with time, but the PVs fluctuated strongly during the last 4 months.
