Studies have shown that the inhibition of phosphatase and tensin homolog deleted on chromosome 10 (PTEN)was neuroprotective against ischemia/reperfusion(I/R) injury. Bisperoxovanadium (bpV), a derivative of vanadate, is a well-established inhibitor of PTEN. However, its function islimited due to its general inadequacy in penetrating cell membranes.

Electronic address:

Background: Bipolar disorder (BD), a severe neuropsychiatric condition, often appears during adolescence. Traditional diagnostic methods, which primarily rely on clinical interviews and single-modal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques, may have limitations in accuracy. This study aimed to improve adolescent BD diagnosis by integrating behavioral assessments with multimodal MRI.

Background: Patients with diabetes are prone to acute kidney injury (AKI) with a high mortality rate, poor prognosis, and a higher risk of progression to chronic kidney disease than non-diabetic patients.

Methods: Streptozotocin (STZ)-treated type 1 and db/db type 2 diabetes model were established, AKI model was induced in mice by ischemia-reperfusion injury(IRI). Mouse proximal tubular cell cells were subjected to high glucose and hypoxia-reoxygenation in vitro.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how early clinical and laboratory factors in pregnant women with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) can predict adverse pregnancy outcomes for both mothers and newborns.
  • A retrospective analysis of 126 SLE patients revealed that nearly 93% had live births, but almost 47% experienced adverse neonatal outcomes (ANOs), particularly related to disease activity and lupus nephritis.
  • Key findings indicate that high disease activity early in pregnancy is a significant predictor of adverse outcomes, highlighting the need for tailored management strategies for these patients.

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese therapy with treating potential against cognitive dysfunction. MicroRNA-21-3p (miR-21-3p) is well characterized for its benefits on neural tissues. The current study hypothesizes that the acupuncture aiming "Du" channel could attenuate IS-induced neural disorders by modulating the function of REST/miR-21-3p axis.

Glycogen synthase kinase-3β: A multifaceted player in ischemia-reperfusion injury and its therapeutic prospects.

J Cell Physiol

September 2024

Xi'an Key Laboratory of Innovative Drug Research for Heart Failure, Northwest University First Hospital, Faculty of Life Sciences and Medicine, Northwest University, Xi'an, China.

Ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) results in irreversible metabolic dysfunction and structural damage to tissues or organs, posing a formidable challenge in the field of organ implantation, cardiothoracic surgery, and general surgery. Glycogen synthase kinase-3β (GSK-3β) a multifunctional serine/threonine kinase, is involved in a variety of biological processes, including cell proliferation, apoptosis, and immune response. Phosphorylation of its tyrosine 216 and serine 9 sites positively and negatively regulates the activation and inactivation of the enzyme.

Background: : Hypertension is an important contributing factor to atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), and multiple risk factors, many of which are implicated in metabolic disorders, contribute to the cause of hypertension. Despite the promise of multimodal data-driven prediction model, no such prediction model was available to predict the risk of ASCVD in Chinese individuals with new-onset hypertension and no history of ASCVD.

Methods: : A total of 514 patients were randomly allocated to training and verification cohorts (ratio, 7 : 3).

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a positive-sense, single-stranded RNA genome-containing virus which has infected millions of people all over the world. The virus has been mutating rapidly enough, resulting in the emergence of new variants and sub-variants which have reportedly been spread from Wuhan city in China, the epicenter of the virus, to the rest of China and all over the world. The occurrence of mutations in the viral genome, especially in the viral spike protein region, has resulted in the evolution of multiple variants and sub-variants which gives the virus the benefit of host immune evasion and thus renders modern-day vaccines and therapeutics ineffective.

Potential of BMI as a screening indicator for extracranial-intracranial bypass surgery in patients with symptomatic artery occlusion: a post-hoc analysis of the CMOSS trial.

Int J Surg

September 2024

Department of Neurosurgery and Interventional Neuroradiology, Xuanwu Hospital, China International Neuroscience Institute, Capital Medical University, National Center for Neurological Disorders.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores the link between body mass index (BMI) and the risk of ischemic stroke in patients with blocked arteries, aiming to see if BMI can help identify those who might need surgery.
  • Out of 165 patients treated only with medical management, 9.7% experienced a stroke, with higher BMIs showing a stronger connection to this risk; the critical BMI cutoff was identified at 24.5 kg/m².
  • Patients with a BMI ≥24.5 kg/m² benefited more from surgical bypass compared to those with lower BMIs, suggesting the need for further large studies to solidify these results.
