This study aimed to design a new method for rapid and accurate detection of carbapenemase phenotypes based on the simplified carbapenem inactivation method (sCIM). We evaluated the sensitivity and specificity of the method, called the rapid carbapenemase detection method (rCDM), for the detection of carbapenemase-producing and . A total of 257 , 236 , and 20 isolates were tested.

Interpreting disease-causing variants, especially in noncoding regions by genome-wide association studies (GWAS), has become one of the most challenging and demanding tasks. We hypothesized that functional lncRNAs variants in GWAS-identified loci might alter expression level of genes associated with persistent HBV infection and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Integrated bioinformatics approaches were used to prioritize potentially functional variants and a two-stage case-control study (2473 HBV positive HCC patients, 2248 persistent HBV carriers and 2294 spontaneously recovered subjects) was performed to assess the roles of these variants.

During the stringent response, bacteria synthesize guanosine-3',5'-bis(diphosphate) (ppGpp) and guanosine-5'-triphosphate 3'-diphosphate (pppGpp), which act as secondary messengers to promote cellular survival and adaptation. (p)ppGpp 'alarmones' are synthesized and/or hydrolyzed by proteins belonging to the RelA/SpoT Homologue (RSH) family. Many bacteria also encode 'small alarmone synthetase' (SAS) proteins (e.

The ATP bioluminescence method has been increasingly employed as a rapid, on-site detection method in nosocomial infections control. In this study, we used a paired design of monitoring methods, the colony counting method (C) and the ATP bioluminescence method, to evaluate environmental surfaces after disinfection. The ATP bioluminescence method included three detector types (B, P, and N).

Background: Phthalates are a family of endocrine disruptors with short elimination half-lives in the human body. To date, few epidemiological studies have examined repeated measures of maternal urinary phthalates and the combined effects of prenatal exposure to multiple phthalates on children's neurocognitive development.
Objectives: We aimed to investigate the association between children's neurocognitive development at 2 years of age and prenatal phthalate exposure, as assessed by repeated measurements during pregnancy, and to further examine the effects of co-exposure to multiple phthalates using cumulative risk assessment.

Fast dissemination of the mobilized colistin resistance () gene in causes a huge threat to the treatment of severe infection. In the current report, a multiple cross displacement amplification (MCDA) coupled with the detection of amplified products by gold nanoparticles-based lateral flow biosensor (LFB) assay (MCDA-LFB) was established to identify the gene with simpleness, rapidity, specificity, and sensitivity. The MCDA-LFB assay was performed at a isothermal temperature (63°C) for only 30 min during the amplification stage, and the reaction products were directly identified by using LFB which obtained the result within 2 min.

The identification of recent HIV-1 infection is clinically important for the effective treatment and prevention of transmission. However, the window period for seroconversion with respect to various HIV-1 antibodies is not well characterized. In addition, the routine HIV testing algorithms are not particularly appropriate for the identification of recent HIV-1 infection.

The SLC10A1 Ser267Phe (S267F) variant has been reported to severely inhibit hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and taurocholate transport activity. This study aimed to clarify the effects of this variant on HBV infection and bile acid metabolism. SLC10A1 S267F was genotyped in 2907 HBV-exposed subjects (including HBV persistent carriers and spontaneously recovered subjects) and 1364 unexposed subjects (HBV marker-negative subjects), followed by replication I, comprising 914 exposed subjects and 1123 unexposed subjects, and replication II, comprising 355 children born to HBsAg-positive mothers (226 HBV-infected children and 129 controls).

Background & Aims: Genome-wide association studies have identified multiple genetic signals associated with the risk of persistent hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and HBV-related hepatocellular carcinoma. However, the majority of the associated variants may only be markers of functional variants and the underlying biological mechanisms remain elusive. We hypothesized that the functional variants with modulating transcription factor (TF) binding affinity in genome-wide association studies-identified loci may influence the risk of persistent HBV infection in Chinese people.

Di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP) is a typical endocrine-disrupting chemical and reproductive toxicant. Although previous studies have attempted to describe the mechanism by which DEHP exposure results in reproductive dysfunction, few studies focused on puberty, a critical period of reproductive development, and the increased susceptibility to injury in adolescents. To elucidate the mechanism underpinning the testicular effects of DEHP in puberty, we sought to investigate the JAZF1/TR4 pathway in the testes of pubertal rats.

Hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) is a serious public health problem with increasing cases and substantial financial burden in China, especially in Wuhan city. Hence, there is an urgent need to construct a model to predict the incidence of HFMD that could make the prevention and control of this disease more effective. The incidence data of HFMD of Wuhan city from January 2009 to December 2016 were used to fit a combined model with seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average (SARIMA) model and support vector regression (SVR) model.

Purpose: Following the implementation of breast cancer (BC) control strategies for years in Central China, the outcome needs to be evaluated and further strategies based on long-term surveillance should be formulated. Therefore, we examined the trends of BC incidence and mortality during 1990-2014 and projected them to 2024 in Wuhan, Central China.
Patients And Methods: The incidence and mortality data of BC were extracted from the Wuhan Cancer Registry.

To investigate rapid suspension cell signaling, a microfluidic platform was urgently needed for flexibly manipulation of single cells and simultaneous generation of controllable chemical signals to stimulate single cells. In this paper, a microfluidic biosensor was developed to monitor intracellular calcium signal, integrated with single-cell trapping, chemical stimulation and releasing. Selective entrapment and discharge of individual cell were achieved by controlling the deformable membrane with pneumatic traps.

Chemical disinfectants effectively kill pathogenic microorganisms, eliminating routes of transmission for infectious diseases. Accurate quantification of the active ingredients can help make a more effective use of disinfectants. In this study, the active ingredients in six different types of chemical disinfectants were systematically quantified with great precision and accuracy using potentiometric titration.

Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), a natural and major ingredient of green tea, has been shown to have anti-inflammation and anti-HIV-1 properties. We demonstrated that the intrarectal administration of EGCG could protect rhesus macaques from repetitive, intrarectal challenges with low-dose SHIV. This protection has a per-exposure risk reduction of 91.

Introduction: Addressing nicotine dependence is key to effective smoking cessation. While self-report measures of nicotine dependence are often challenged for their reliability and validity, there is a lack of non-invasive and inexpensive objective measures of nicotine dependence. In this study, we aimed to explore the potential of using video-assisted smoking topography to derive objective measures indicative of nicotine dependence with the guidance of nicotine-receptor-based self-titration theory.
