Aims/introduction: Our aim was to investigate the optimal fasting glucose (FPG) range in Chinese older adults with type 2 diabetes, and to clarify whether the optimal range varies according to the control of risk factors.
Materials And Methods: The baseline survey for the cohort study began in 2018, with follow up ending in 2022. Our study enrolled 59,030 older diabetes patients with no history of cardiovascular disease (CVD).

Background: Influenza is a common illness for its high rates of morbidity and transmission. The implementation of non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) during the COVID-19 pandemic to manage its dissemination could affect the transmission of influenza.
Methods: A retrospective analysis, between 2018 and 2023, was conducted to examine the incidence of influenza virus types A and B among patients in sentinel cities located in North or South China as well as in Wuhan City.

Background: The psychological situation of high school students during adolescence is not promising, and the most obvious manifestation is the lack of subjective well-being (SWB). This network analysis presents a model of the interaction and correlation between different items of SWB, identifying the most central items for high school students.
Methods: Through offline and online surveys, 4,378 questionnaires were sent out and finally 4,282 Chinese high school students were available.

Background: Measurement of the Chinese burden of disease with disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) requires disability weight (DW) that quantify health losses for all non-fatal consequences of disease and injury. The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2013 DW study indicates that it is limited by lack of geographic variation in DW data and by the current measurement methodology. We aim to estimate DW for a set of health states from major diseases in the Wuhan population.

Scope: Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), an important proatherogenic uremic toxin, is oxidized by hepatic-flavin monooxygenases from gut microbiome-generated trimethylamine (TMA). The present study aims to explore whether manipulating the gut microbiota by inulin-type fructans (ITFs) can reduce circulating TMAO levels in peritoneal dialysis patients.
Methods And Results: This is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover trial with 10 g day ITFs intervention for 3 months in continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis patients.

Pentachlorophenol (PCP) is a ubiquitous environmental persistent organic pollutant and a Group 1 carcinogen. Human exposure level of PCP was reported to be relatively higher in China than in many other countries, because sodium pentachlorophenate was abused as molluscicide in China. PCP can induce oxidative stress; however, the relationship of PCP exposure with oxidative stress biomarkers (OSBs) in human beings has rarely been documented.

Carbendazim (CBDZ) is the most widely used fungicide in China. It is ubiquitous in environment and can induce oxidative stress in mammals, while data on occurrence of its metabolite in human urine are scarce, and the relationship between CBDZ and oxidative stress biomarkers (OSBs) in young children has not been examined. The aim of this study was to measure the concentrations of methyl 5-hydroxy-2-benzimidazolecarbamate (5-HBC, the main metabolite of CBDZ in urine) in 390 urine samples collected from 130 healthy young (< 6.

Background: Ticks (order Ixodida) are ectoparasites, vectors and reservoirs of many infectious agents affecting humans and domestic animals. However, the lack of information on tick genomic diversity leaves significant gaps in the understanding of the evolution of ticks and associated bacteria.
Results: We collected > 20,000 contemporary and historical (up to 60 years of preservation) tick samples representing a wide range of tick biodiversity across diverse geographic regions in China.

Background: The disability weight (DW) quantifies the severity of health states from disease sequela and is a pivotal parameter for disease burden calculation. We conducted a national and subnational DW measurement in China.
Methods: In 2020-2021, we conducted a web-based survey to assess DWs for 206 health states in 31 Chinese provinces targeting health workers via professional networks.

Health risks of chronic exposure to microcystins (MCs), a family of aquatic contaminants produced mainly by cyanobacteria, are critical yet unsolved problems. Despite a few epidemiological studies, the metabolic profiles of humans exposed to MCs remain unknown, hindering the deep understanding of the molecular toxicity mechanisms. Here, sensitive nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)- and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS)-based metabolomics were applied to investigate the serum metabolic profiles of humans living near Lake Chao, where toxic cyanobacterial blooms occur annually.

Background: Epidemiological evidence linking type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) with air pollution is discrepant and most are restricted to the influences of air-pollutant mass concentration. This study aims to explore the effects of long-term exposure to air pollution and its metal constituents on T2DM prevalence in China.
Methods: We used data on 10,253 adult residents from the baseline survey of Wuhan Chronic Disease Cohort in 2019.

Widespread use of fungicides has raised the concern of exposure to them among the general population. However, there are extremely limited studies reporting the occurrence of fungicides in indoor dust in China. This study aimed to determine ten agricultural fungicides in indoor dust samples collected in three cities of China from 2016 to 2019, assess spatial and seasonal variations, and estimate the related exposure via dust ingestion.

However, the association between exposure to paraben derivatives and oxidative stress biomarkers in children has been rarely studied. This study examined the associations between exposure to paraben derivatives and oxidative stress biomarkers in Chinese children.

Exposure to organophosphate (OP) insecticides has been found to be related to neurodevelopmental disorders in children. However, no study has examined the association between OP insecticide exposure and the risk of dyslexia among children. We aimed to explore the association between OP insecticide exposure, indicated by urinary dialkylphosphate metabolites (DAPs), and the risk of dyslexia among Chinese Han children from three cities.

Sociodemographic factors have an impact worldwide on the behavior of people who use drugs (PWUD). This study attempts to clarify the sociodemographic factors related to HIV/HCV high-risk behaviors (injection drug use, syringe sharing, and multiple sex partners) among PWUD on methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) in the long term. The 13,300 PWUD recruited into the MMT program were followed during 2006-2015.

Bentazone is a widely used post-emergence herbicide, while no data was available on its concentrations in tap water from China and in urine among the general population. It was determined in the source (Wuhan section of the Yangtze River watershed), treated, and tap water (n = 20, 20, and 170, respectively) in different seasons (2019) in Wuhan, central China. Also, urine samples (n = 38) collected from healthy adults in Wuhan (September 2020) were analyzed to characterize its urinary concentration.

Despite the adoption of a national immunization program in China, the incidence of mumps remains high. This study aimed to describe the epidemiological characteristics, including the time, region, occupation, and age, of mumps in Wuhan from 2005 to 2018 and to evaluate its transmissibility. In this study, the susceptible-exposed-infectious-asymptomatic-recovered (SEIAR) model fitted the actual incidence data of mumps.
