Actinopterygians (ray-finned fishes) successfully passed through the Permian-Triassic Mass Extinction (PTME) and flourished in the Triassic with diverse feeding specializations and occupation of various trophic levels. , one of the largest actinopterygian fish of the Triassic, was characterized by a strong, blunt rostrum and three rows of sharp cutting-edged teeth, making them the top predators in the Early Mesozoic oceanic ecosystem. These fishes rapidly radiated and diversified globally during the Early and Middle Triassic, but the fossil record is rare for the Neo-Tethys in the Late Triassic.

Seawater and groundwater interactions shape the hydrogeochemical profile of mangrove aquifers, revealing how biogeochemical processes adapt to saline-freshwater mixing via the fluctuating patterns of key hydrochemical indicators and primary biogenic elements. This study, utilizing a multi-level monitoring profile spanning the entire submerged aquifer within a mangrove wetland, analyzed the spatiotemporal dynamics of DO, ORP, pH, alkalinity and biogenic elements (C, N, S). The results revealed that among the basic hydrochemical parameters, total alkalinity showed the most stable spatiotemporal distribution and was positively correlated with salinity.

Conventional concentration-oriented approaches for nitrate risk diagnosis only provide overall risk levels without identifying risk values of individual sources or sources accountable for potential health risks. Therefore, a hybrid model combining the end-member mixing model tool on Excel™ (EMMTE) with human health risk assessment (HHRA) was developed to assess the source-oriented health risks for groundwater nitrate, particularly in the Poyang Lake Plain (PLP) region. The results indicated that the EMMTE and the Bayesian stable isotope mixing model (MixSIAR) exhibited remarkable consistency in source apportionment of groundwater nitrate.

Modern baleen whales are unique as large-sized filter feeders, but their roles were replicated much earlier by diverse marine reptiles of the Mesozoic. Here, we investigate convergence in skull morphology between modern baleen whales and one of the earliest marine reptiles, the basal ichthyosauromorph Hupehsuchus nanchangensis, from the Early Triassic, a time of rapid recovery of life following profound mass extinction. Two new specimens reveal the skull morphology especially in dorsal view.

As the particularly popular green energy, geothermal resources are gradually favored by countries around the world, and the development model centered on geothermal dew point cannot meet the increasing geothermal demand. In this paper, a GIS model combining PCA and AHP is proposed, aiming to select the advantages of geothermal resources at the regional scale and analyze the main influencing indicators. Through the combination of the two methods, both data and empirical can be considered, then the geothermal advantage distribution on the area can be displayed through GIS software images.

During the Marinoan Ice Age (ca. 654-635 Ma), one of the 'Snowball Earth' events in the Cryogenian Period, continental icesheets reached the tropical oceans. The Altaids is generally considered to be the largest Phanerozoic accretionary orogen on Earth, but it is unclear whether it was associated with extensive continental crustal growth and whether there is a link between the crustal growth and ore mineralization. This paper reviews whole-rock Nd and zircon Hf isotope data for felsic-intermediate-mafic igneous rocks in the Altaids and presents Nd + Hf isotopic contour maps for this region. The maps highlight the 3D lithospheric compositional architecture of the Altaids and make it possible to quantitatively evaluate the crustal growth and its relationship with ore deposits.

High levels of geogenic ammonium in groundwater is a highly neglected nitrogen pool in coastal aquatic systems. Although organic matter (OM) mineralization is known to significantly influence geogenic ammonium enrichment, the detailed mechanism underlying ammonium enrichment based on dissolved organic matter (DOM) characterization in coastal aquifer systems remains unclear. In this study, we characterized the optical and molecular signatures of DOM coupled with hydrogeochemistry and multiple isotopes (H/O/C/N) to elucidate in detail the mechanisms underlying the anomalously high ammonium in the coastal confined aquifer system of the Pearl River Delta, which exhibits the highest reported geogenic ammonium concentration in groundwater on the Earth.

Although groundwater nitrogen pollution has been widely studied, the control of hydrogeological conditions on behavior of nitrogen compounds has been poorly understood. In this study, multiple stable isotopes (N/C/H/O), spectral characteristics of DOM coupled with water chemistry were used to reveal the sources and fate of nitrate and ammonium in three subareas with different hydrogeological conditions in the Central Yangtze River Basin. We identified three contrasting patterns of nitrogen sources and fate in groundwater controlled by different aquifer features.

Source identification and health risk assessment of heavy metals in groundwater is one of the key issues in China's new era of environmental management. In order to reveal the status, sources, and health risk of pollutants in groundwater of the Leizhou Peninsula, 44 groundwater samples were collected, and the concentrations and spatial distribution of Cr, Mn, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Hg, and Pb were measured and analyzed. In one of our previous studies, the mechanisms of radical-initiated methylmercury (MeHg) degradation in soil with coexisting Fe and Cu have been reported. In this work, various environmental factors, including water table fluctuation, pH and major ions, are discussed to clarify the behavior of MeHg in subsurface environments. Soil column experiments were set up to simulate the degradation of MeHg in the soil with an iron-bearing mineral (annite), which has often undergone repeating wetting-drying cycles, resulting from the local climate.

To prevent the stripping of coating sorbents in headspace solid-phase microextraction, a porous extraction probe with packed sorbent was introduced by using a porous stainless steel needle tube and homemade sol-gel sorbents. The traditional stainless-steel needle tube was punched by a laser to obtain two rows of holes, which supply a passageway for analyte vapor during extraction and desorption. The sorbent was prepared by a traditional sol-gel method with both poly(ethylene glycol) and hydroxy-terminated silicone oil as coating ingredients.
