Female mosquitoes require a vertebrate blood meal to activate reproduction, transmitting numerous devastating human diseases. Vitellogenesis is a central event of female reproduction that involves the massive production of vitellogenin (Vg) in the fat body and the maturation of ovaries. This process is controlled by the steroid hormone 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E); however, its molecular regulatory basis remains not completely understood.

Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), a widely used plasticizer, could cause male reproductive toxicity by disrupting spermatogenesis. Piwi-interacting RNAs (piRNAs) are a small non-coding RNAs specifically highly expressed in the germline and interact with PIWI proteins to regulate spermatogenesis. Accumulating studies have confirmed that environmental poisons could induce male reproductive injury via altering piRNA expression.

Non-neonatal tetanus is an acute, specific, toxic disease in patients over 28 days of age, characterized by continuous rigidity and paroxysmal spasms of the skeletal muscles throughout the body caused by the intrusion of Clostridium tetani through skin or mucosal membrane into the body and reproducing in anaerobic environments to produce exotoxins. The mortality rate of severe patients is close to 100% without medical intervention. Even with aggressive comprehensive treatment, the global mortality rate remains at 30%-50%, making it a potentially fatal disease.

Hubei Province Key Laboratory of Occupational Hazard Identification and Control, School of Public Health, Wuhan University of Science and Technology, Wuhan 430065, China. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Fine particulate matter (PM) pollution and extreme temperature events (ETEs) are serious environmental risks linked to increased stroke mortality, but their interactions have not been thoroughly studied before.
  • This study analyzed data from over 320,000 stroke deaths in eastern China between 2016-2019, examining the effects of various PM constituents (like black carbon and nitrate) and 12 combinations of ETEs on stroke mortality through a sophisticated statistical method.
  • Results showed that higher levels of PM constituents, particularly nitrate, significantly raised stroke mortality risk, emphasizing the importance of monitoring air quality and temperature extremes for public health.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to improve the air quality health index (AQHI) by accounting for spatial differences in pollution exposure within cities, thereby providing a more accurate assessment of health risks associated with air quality.
  • Using data from 2016-2019 in Jiangsu Province, the researchers analyzed over 1.9 million nonaccidental death cases through a three-phase approach that assessed individual pollutant risks and created a spatiotemporal AQHI (ST-AQHI) with varying risk levels.
  • Results showed significant increases in nonaccidental death risk linked to specific air pollutants, with a general decline in annual average ST-AQHI values throughout the study period, indicating improvements in air quality.

Excessive use of synthetic insecticides has resulted in environmental contamination and adverse effects on humans and other non-target organisms. Entomopathogenic fungi offer eco-friendly alternatives; however, their application for pest control requires significant advancement owing to limitations like slow killing time and effectiveness only when applied in higher amounts, whereas exposure to UV radiation, high temperature, and humidity can also reduce their viability and shelf-life. The nanoparticles synthesized using fungal extracellular extracts provide a new approach to use fungal pathogens.
