Context: The theory of reactivity based on cDFT has been supplemented with the new method of calculating the atomic and local indices. With the use of previously derived relationship of the electron density gradient to the softness kernel and to the linear response function, we deliver theoretical analysis to obtain significant reactivity indices-the electron density derivatives: local softness and local hypersoftness together with the global hyperhardness index and the derivative of the global softness with respect to the number of electrons. The local derivatives have been applied in the calculation of responses of atoms to perturbation by an external potential by the alchemical approach.

Detecting optical defocus at the retina is crucial for accurate accommodation and emmetropization. However, the optical characteristics of ocular defocus are not fully understood. To bridge this knowledge gap, we simulated polychromatic retinal image quality by considering both the monochromatic wavefront aberrations and chromatic aberrations of the eye, both in the fovea and the periphery (nasal visual field).

Motivated by recent efforts to develop quantum computing for practical, industrial-scale challenges, we demonstrate the effectiveness of state-of-the-art hybrid (not necessarily quantum) solvers in addressing the business-centric optimization problem of scheduling Automatic Guided Vehicles (AGVs). Some solvers can already leverage noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) devices. In our study, we utilize D-Wave hybrid solvers that implement classical heuristics with potential assistance from a quantum processing unit.

The study presents a novel approach utilizing iminium salt activation and mild enolization of thioesters, offering an efficient and rapid synthesis of Michael adducts with promising stereoselectivity and marking a significant advancement in mechanocatalysis. The stereoselective addition of bisthiomalonates - to cyclic enones and 4-chlorobenzylideneacetone proceeds stereoselectively under iminium activation conditions secured by chiral primary amines, in contrast to oxo-esters as observed in dibenzyl malonate addition. Mild enolization of thioesters allows for the generation of Michael adducts with good yields and stereoselectivities.

G-quadruplexes (G4s) are important therapeutic and photopharmacological targets in cancer research. Small-molecule ligands targeting G4s offer a promising strategy to block DNA transactions and induce genetic instability in cancer cells. While numerous G4-ligands have been reported, relatively few examples exist of compounds whose G4-interactive binding properties can be modulated using light.

A recent experiment revealed an unexpected FQHE at filling fraction 3/4 in a GaAs 2D hole system, which contradicts the composite fermion model prediction and the observation of a compressible Hall metal-type state in a twin 2D electron system in GaAs at the same filling fraction 3/4 at almost same other conditions. This finding challenges conventional effective single-quasiparticle model for FQHE exposing its limitations. We explain this experimental observation within a multiparticle approach based on a topological cyclotron commensurability criterion.

Calix[n]arenes, macrocycles constituted of 4-8 phenol moieties linked through methylene bridges, are stable molecules that can be selectively functionalised at the upper or lower rim. It has already been demonstrated that calixarene derivatives can be biologically or pharmacologically active compounds. More recently, suitably functionalised calixarenes and calixarene analogues (dihomooxacalixarenes, thiacalixarenes, calix[4]resorcinols, azacalixarenes, calixpyrroles, and pillarenes) were found to act as anticancer agents, at least in in vitro assays.

We investigate here a systematic way to tune two-photon transition strengths (δ) and two-photon absorption (2PA) cross sections (σ) of the rhodopsin's chromophore 11--retinal protonated Schiff base (RPSB) via the modulation of the methyl groups pattern along its polyene chain. Our team employed the resolution of identity, coupled cluster approximate second order (RI-CC2) method with Dunning's aug-cc-pVDZ basis set, to determine the structural impact on δ, as well as its correlation to both transition dipole moments and permanent electric dipole moments. Seven structures were probed in vacuo, including five-double-bond-conjugated model of the native chromophore, shortened by the β-ionone ring (RPSB5), and its de/methylated analogues: 9-methyl, 13-methyl, planar and twisted models of 9,10-dimethyl and 9,10,13-trimethyl.

G-quadruplex (G4) DNA structures are increasingly acknowledged as promising targets in cancer research, and the development of G4-specific stabilizing compounds may lay a fundamental foundation in precision medicine for cancer treatment. Here, we propose a light-responsive G4-binder for precise modulation of drug activation, providing dynamic and spatiotemporal control over G4-associated biological processes contributing to cancer cell death. We developed a specialized fluorinated azobenzene (AB) switch equipped with a quinoline unit and a positively charged carboxamide side chain, Q-Azo4F-C, designed for targeted binding to G4 structures within cells.
