Pediatric Palliative Care Simulation Improves Resident Learning Outcomes: An 11-Year Review.

J Pain Symptom Manage

February 2025

Haslinger Family Pediatric Palliative Care Center (C.D.H., G.R., D.H.G., S.F.), Akron Children's Hospital, Akron, Ohio, USA; Department of Pediatrics (C.D.H., S.F.), Northeast Ohio Medical University, Rootstown, Ohio, USA; Rebecca D. Considine Research Institute (G.R., M.B., D.H.G.), Akron Children's Hospital, Akron, Ohio, USA.

Context: Many general pediatrics residents lack sufficient opportunities to conduct difficult conversations with families, particularly about end-of-life care. Simulation learning is an effective means of practicing professional skills. A pediatric palliative care (PPC) physician is uniquely suited to mentor residents and fellows learning to lead difficult conversations through simulation.

Generous dissonance and wanderings: form and politics in Virginia Woolf's and Ali Smith's .

J Lesbian Stud

July 2024

University of Massachusetts Boston, Writing Center, Boston, MA, USA.

This essay looks at, and compares, by Ali Smith and by Virginia Woolf and attempts to understand the differences within both the formal and philosophical/political outlook of the two works. Presuming stream-of-consciousness as both a set of formal prosaic styles and a genre, the essay argues that the way the novels utilize formal style is indicative of their individual politics in counterintuitive ways. Furthermore, it argues that by looking at these two novels we can begin to map a lineage of queer stream-of-consciousness works and explore how those perspectives have changed over time.

The use of two personal dosimeters, one worn over and one worn under a protective apron, provides the best estimate of effective dose. However, inappropriate positioning of dosimeters is a common occurrence, resulting in abnormally high or low radiation exposure records. Although such incorrect positioning can be identified by radiation exposure records, doing so is time-consuming and labor-intensive for administrators.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether audiovisual presentation of consent information would significantly improve patients' postoperative recall of risks and complications regarding surgical removal of impacted lower third molars compared to the presentation of traditional written consent information. A randomised controlled study on 59 patients undergoing third molar removal was conducted. Patients in the intervention group (n = 30) viewed an educational video on risks and complications related to surgery using mobile tablets.

Objective: Education reflecting fundamental knowledge is required for competent health care providers, but often lectures are not available for this purpose. This study aimed to evaluate the dental hygiene learning outcomes following the presentation of web-based slides on a smartphone to dental hygienists.

Methods: A two-group nonblinded quasi-experimental design was used for this study.

Article Synopsis
  • The report introduces a new method to analyze how dosimeters are incorrectly positioned based on the dose equivalent Hp(10) readings of medical workers.
  • Dosimeter readings were taken monthly for a year using two devices worn over and under protective aprons, allowing for classification into proper use (≥ 5 ratio) and misuse (< 5 ratio) groups.
  • The misuse group was further divided into six subcategories based on interview findings, and a scatter plot was identified as an effective tool for visualizing and addressing misuse patterns in dosimeter usage.

Background: Periodontitis progression is characterized by alveolar bone loss, and its prevention is a major clinical problem in periodontal disease management. Matrix metalloproteinase-8 (MMP-8) has been shown to adequately monitor the treatment of chronic periodontitis patients as gingival crevicular fluid MMP-8s were positively associated with the severity of periodontal disease. Moreover, modulating the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) levels in bones could be a good way to improve bone regeneration and cure periodontitis as VEGF promotes endothelial cell proliferation, proteolytic enzyme release, chemotaxis, and migration; all of which are required for angiogenesis.

The Identification of Marker Genes for Predicting the Osteogenic Differentiation Potential of Mesenchymal Stromal Cells.

Curr Issues Mol Biol

November 2021

Department of Dental and Medical Biochemistry, Graduate School of Biomedical and Health Sciences, Hiroshima University, Hiroshima 734-8533, Japan.

Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) have the potential to differentiate into a variety of mature cell types and are a promising source of regenerative medicine. The success of regenerative medicine using MSCs strongly depends on their differentiation potential. In this study, we sought to identify marker genes for predicting the osteogenic differentiation potential by comparing ilium MSC and fibroblast samples.

Previously, we found that the basic helix-loop-helix transcriptional repressor DEC1 interacts with the PPARγ:RXRα heterodimer, a master transcription factor for adipogenesis and lipogenesis, to suppress transcription from PPARγ target genes (Noshiro et al., Genes to Cells, 2018, 23:658-669). Because the expression of PPARγ and several of its target genes exhibits circadian rhythmicity in white adipose tissue (WAT), we examined the expression profiles of PPARγ target genes in wild-type and Dec1 mice.

How do ideas come into being? Our contribution takes its starting point in an observation we made in empirical data from a prior study. The data center around an instant of an academic writer's thinking during the revision of a scientific paper. Through a detailed discourse-oriented micro-analysis, we zoom in on the writer's thinking activity and uncover the genesis of a complex idea through a sequence of interrelated moments.

Medicine is facing an identity crisis, one that might find resolution by revisiting a past rich in multifaceted individuals who transcended the strict definition of 'doctor', excelled in other fields of human endeavor, and showed us different ways of being physicians. This paper reviews 12 archetypes that have been part of the profession since its inception, but that, as of late, might have been forgotten. Our goal is to elicit discussion and introspection, with the premise that being a physician ought to be something larger than being a mere technician.

Genetic Markers Can Predict Chondrogenic Differentiation Potential in Bone Marrow-Derived Mesenchymal Stromal Cells.

Stem Cells Int

October 2018

Department of Dental and Medical Biochemistry, Graduate School of Biomedical & Health Sciences, Hiroshima University, Hiroshima 734-8533, Japan.

The precise predictions of the differentiation direction and potential of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are an important key to the success of regenerative medicine. The expression levels of fate-determining genes may provide tools for predicting differentiation potential. The expression levels of 95 candidate marker genes and glycosaminoglycan (GAG) contents after chondrogenic induction in 10 undifferentiated ilium and 5 jaw MSC cultures were determined, and their correlations were analyzed.

Obesity is a major public health problem in developed countries resulting from increased food intake and decreased energy consumption and usually associated with abnormal lipid metabolism. Here, we show that DEC1, a basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor, plays an important role in the regulation of lipid consumption in mouse brown adipose tissue (BAT), which is the major site of thermogenesis. Homozygous Dec1 deletion attenuated high-fat-diet-induced obesity, adipocyte hypertrophy, fat volume and hepatic steatosis.

Holistic Care of Hemodialysis Access in Patients with Kidney Failure.

Nephrol Nurs J

August 2018

Professor of Nursing, School of Nursing, SON Writing Center, SON Center for Nursing Workforce Excellence, California State University, Fullerton, CA.

Kidney failure requiring hemodialysis is a chronic illness that has physical, psychosocial, and financial consequences. Patients with kidney failure receiving hemodialysis need a renewed focus on self-care, prevention, and community-based health management to reduce healthcare costs and complications, and improve outcomes and quality of life, while living with an altered lifestyle. A holistic chronic care model was applied as a guideline for healthcare professionals involved with this population to more effectively engage people with kidney failure in their management of their hemodialysis access.
